1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf your homelab depends on separating trusted devices, IoT gear, guests, and servers into networks with rules between them, UniFi is the stronger fit of these two based on their documented features. eero is designed around straightforward household mesh Wi-Fi; it can provide Wi-Fi behind another router in bridge mode, but bridge mode disables eero routing and removes several management features. That makes UniFi the better match for my stated homelab priorities—not a verdict that eero is bad or unusable.
What matters most in a homelab comparison?
The deciding question is whether you need control at the gateway or mainly want easy-to-manage mesh Wi-Fi. A homelab may benefit from distinct networks for servers, trusted devices, IoT equipment, and guests, plus rules governing which networks can communicate. Ubiquiti documents gateway zone-based firewall policies and Network Isolation for this kind of inter-network control. The eero materials reviewed here focus on household mesh Wi-Fi and bridge mode; they do not establish comparable eero VLAN-policy capabilities.

That distinction is more important than a headline Wi-Fi speed. A fast mesh system can improve wireless coverage, but it does not replace gateway policy controls when segmentation is a core requirement.

|---|---|---|---|
| Gateway segmentation | Ubiquiti documents zone-based firewall policies and Network Isolation, which automatically configures firewall rules to block inter-VLAN traffic. Ubiquiti’s isolation guide | The reviewed eero support pages describe bridge mode, not equivalent VLAN-policy controls. eero’s bridge-mode guide | UniFi is the better-documented choice when you need to define which networks can reach one another. The available documentation is not enough to claim that every eero model lacks every advanced networking feature. |
| Management | UniFi Network can run on a Cloud Gateway or other control-plane options, including hosted, CloudKey, and self-hosted deployments. Ubiquiti’s control-plane guide | Setup and management of eero Pro 7 require the Android or iOS eero app. eero Pro 7 support | Choose the administration style you want: a broader managed networking platform or an app-centered household mesh system. |
| Using it behind another router | A UniFi Cloud Gateway can act as the gateway and UniFi management platform. Ubiquiti’s control-plane guide | Bridge mode keeps eero Wi-Fi operating behind an existing router, but turns off eero routing and removes features including IP reservations, port forwarding, custom DNS, and Smart Queue Management. One eero must remain wired. Bridge mode and features lost in bridge mode | eero can still serve as the wireless layer in a more controlled network, but it is not operating as a full eero router in bridge mode. |
| Wi-Fi and physical interfaces | Gateway capabilities vary by model; some setups may need separate access points. Ubiquiti’s control-plane guide | eero Pro 7 is a tri-band Wi-Fi 7 mesh unit with two 5 GbE ports per device, according to eero. eero Pro 7 specifications | Compare the specific gateway and access-point arrangement with your coverage, wired-backhaul, and port-speed needs. |
What UniFi offers for network control
Gateway and management in one platform
UniFi Cloud Gateways combine UniFi Network management with gateway, routing, and security functions. Ubiquiti says it strongly recommends starting with a Cloud Gateway for the best UniFi experience because it integrates networking, security, and UniFi management software in one device. That is the vendor’s guidance, not an independent endorsement. The same guide also documents hosted, CloudKey, and self-hosted control-plane choices for different needs.

Model capabilities vary. Ubiquiti’s guide describes the UCG-Ultra as an entry-level solution with 1 Gbps routing and the UCG-Max as offering 2.3 Gbps routing. Those are vendor-stated figures, not independent measurements; check the current specification for the exact model before choosing a gateway.
Rules between networks
Ubiquiti documents Zone-Based Firewall policies between network zones and a Network Isolation feature that automatically configures firewall rules to block inter-VLAN traffic. These tools are relevant if, for example, you want a server network to be isolated from household devices, or guest and IoT networks kept apart from trusted clients. Read the Network and Client Isolation guide to understand the documented behavior and configuration details.

Layer 3 routing is a separate consideration from simply creating network segments: where routing occurs can affect which device handles traffic between networks. Ubiquiti’s Layer 3 Routing documentation explains its supported approach. Check the requirements for the specific UniFi gateway and switching setup you plan to use rather than assuming every model handles routing identically.
What eero Pro 7 is built to do
eero Pro 7 is an app-managed Wi-Fi 7 mesh router positioned for household connectivity. eero’s hardware specification table lists two 5 GbE ports, support for 200+ connected devices, up to 4.7 Gbps wired speeds, up to 3.9 Gbps wireless speeds, and coverage up to 2,500 square feet per device. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results; actual speed and coverage depend on the home, placement, configuration, and client devices. The support page does not display a publication year for these figures.

Those features may suit someone whose priority is broad, uncomplicated household Wi-Fi. They do not answer the gateway-segmentation question by themselves: eero’s published bridge-mode guidance explains how to leave routing to another device, while the reviewed pages do not establish matching inter-VLAN policy controls.
Can eero work in a homelab network?
Yes, if you use eero for Wi-Fi rather than relying on it to provide the routing and controls your lab needs. In bridge mode, eeros continue providing Wi-Fi behind an existing router, while the existing router becomes responsible for routing. eero states that one unit must stay wired. Because bridge mode disables eero routing, eero-specific features such as IP reservations, port forwarding, custom DNS, and Smart Queue Management are unavailable in that mode.

This can make sense if you already have a gateway that provides the segmentation and policies you need and want eero to supply mesh Wi-Fi. It is a compromise for someone who expects eero itself to remain the router and still provide all its routing features while bridged.
How to choose for your setup
- Start with your network policy. If you need separate lab, IoT, guest, and trusted networks with rules between them, UniFi has the clearer documented fit of these two. Review UniFi’s isolation guidance before committing to a design.
- Check your gateway throughput needs. Compare the vendor-stated routing capacity of the exact UniFi model against your internet service and local traffic needs; do not treat a model figure as an independent benchmark.
- Map wired ports and access points. Count required wired connections, note their speed, and decide whether the gateway alone will cover the space or whether you need separate access points or mesh nodes.
- Decide who should do the routing. If choosing eero for Wi-Fi alongside another router, confirm that the bridge-mode feature losses are acceptable and plan for one eero to remain wired.
- Choose the management approach you will maintain. UniFi offers multiple control-plane paths, while eero Pro 7 setup and management use its mobile app. Consider the administration you actually want to do, not only the initial setup.
Which is the better option?
For a homelabber whose priority is gateway-level segmentation and policy control, UniFi is the more suitable choice based on the official documentation reviewed. eero Pro 7 is a credible household mesh option and can still provide Wi-Fi behind another router, but bridge mode deliberately gives up eero routing and several network-management features. The practical choice is therefore UniFi for documented network control, or eero as a Wi-Fi layer when another router already handles the lab’s policies.
