For a first custom mechanical keyboard, choose a compatible hot-swap kit, verify every part against the exact PCB and case, and test the bare PCB before installing switches or closing the case. That route avoids soldering while still letting you assemble and configure a keyboard. Soldered and hand-wired builds are possible, but they require more tools and careful work.
Choose a build path and layout first
Start by deciding what keys you need, how much desk space you can give the board, and whether you want to solder. A smaller layout saves space but may put less-used keys on programmable layers. A larger layout keeps more keys dedicated. Neither size label nor switch description tells you whether parts will fit together.

Hot-swap or soldered
| Build path | What it involves | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Hot-swap PCB | Compatible switches press into sockets and can be removed without soldering. Confirm the PCB socket and switch footprint before buying. | A first build, or a build where you may want to change switches later. |
| Soldered PCB | Switches are soldered to the PCB, requiring soldering equipment and careful heat control. | A builder comfortable with soldering or prepared to learn it and follow the board’s instructions. |
| Hand-wired | Switches are wired together rather than mounted in the usual PCB arrangement; wiring, diodes, and firmware configuration add complexity. | A more involved custom project, not the simplest first build. |
Hot-swap does not mean universal compatibility: sockets and switch footprints still need to match. For soldering and hand-wiring, use a stable, ventilated work area, eye protection, a heat-safe iron stand, and the equipment specified for the job. Keep the iron in its stand when idle, and unplug the board before inspecting or correcting a joint. Prolonged heat can damage components and degrade solder joints, as QMK’s Hand-Wiring Guide cautions.
Pick the layout before add-ons
Choose the precise layout—such as ANSI or ISO, split backspace, split right Shift, or a split spacebar—before shopping for a plate, stabilizers, or keycaps. A “65%” or “TKL” label is not a compatibility guarantee. The key positions and physical dimensions matter.

Check compatibility before buying
Treat the case, PCB, plate, stabilizers, switches, and keycaps as one system. Confirm the exact board revision and layout against the kit’s build guide; do not assume parts with the same percentage size will fit together.
- PCB and case: Match mounting points and screw locations. Check the USB cutout and, if used, the daughterboard connection and clearance.
- PCB and plate: Make sure the plate supports the PCB’s specific layout and switch positions.
- Switches and PCB: Check the physical switch footprint and whether the PCB is hot-swap or soldered. “Mechanical” alone does not establish fit.
- Stabilizers: Confirm the required mounting style and positions for the PCB or plate.
- Keycaps: Check that the set covers your layout, modifier sizes, and spacebar size. Unusual bottom rows or split spacebars may need specific keycaps.
- Firmware: Verify support for the exact PCB and revision, and find out whether setup requires a board definition or firmware file.
Beginner build guides from Mechalick and KeebKit both emphasize checking compatibility rather than relying on size labels.

Gather parts and tools
A typical build uses a case, PCB, compatible switches, stabilizers for longer keys, and keycaps; add a plate if the design uses one. Check the kit’s instructions for anything included or omitted rather than assuming a kit contains every part.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- For either build path: A known-good data-capable USB cable, a clean stable work surface, and the drivers specified by the kit.
- For hot-swap: A switch puller and keycap puller make removal easier. Use the switch puller gently so you do not bend switch pins.
- For soldering: A temperature-controlled soldering iron, suitable electronics solder, tip cleaner, fume extraction or good ventilation, eye protection, a heat-safe stand, and flush cutters.
Parts and tool requirements vary by board and build method; follow the kit’s instructions. The KeebKit build guide and QMK hand-wiring documentation cover these distinct paths.

Assemble the keyboard in a testable order
Use your kit’s own guide if its sequence differs. Testing early keeps faults easier to reach than they are after foam, switches, and case parts are installed.
- Inspect the kit. Compare the parts with the kit’s guide, check for visible damage, and identify the PCB revision, connectors, and assembly method.
- Connect and test the bare PCB. Use a known-good data USB cable and confirm the computer recognizes the board. Test its firmware connection before covering or enclosing the PCB. If the board requires a specific setup or key tester, follow its instructions.
- Install stabilizers. Fit the stabilizers for the long keys using the mounting method specified for the PCB or plate. Check that they move freely.
- Join the plate and PCB. For a plate build, position them together and install a few switches to hold them in place. For a soldered build, use the board’s assembly instructions.
- Install the remaining switches. Align each switch and check that its pins are straight before pressing it into a hot-swap socket or soldering it as directed. Forcing bent pins can damage a socket or prevent a connection.
- Test keys before installing the PCB in the case. Check that each key registers. If one does not, investigate the switch, socket or solder joint, and firmware before proceeding.
- Connect and mount the assembly. Connect any daughterboard or USB assembly as directed, position the PCB in the case, and close the case without overtightening screws.
- Install keycaps and check the finished board. Test every key, confirm stabilizers move as expected, and verify the keymap and firmware behavior.
This sequence follows Mechalick’s first-build guide, but kit-specific directions take priority.

Set up firmware and troubleshoot key presses
Firmware is the software that interprets keyboard input and passes it to the computer. QMK describes its role this way: “QMK Firmware fills the role of that software, detecting button presses and passing that information on to the host computer.” Not every PCB uses QMK or supports VIA, so check the exact board’s documentation before choosing a remapping workflow.
If your PCB supports QMK, its official beginner tutorial covers setting up the environment, building firmware, and flashing it. It also explains that a custom keymap is an executable program for the keyboard. Follow the board maker’s current instructions for the correct firmware and flashing method.

If a key does not register
- For a hot-swap board, remove the switch and inspect whether its pins are bent; reseat it carefully or try a known-good compatible switch.
- Check that the socket is intact and the switch is fully seated.
- On a soldered board, inspect the switch’s solder joints with the board unplugged; correct any fault using safe soldering practice.
- For a hand-wired build, check switch contacts, solder points, diodes, and column wiring. Confirm that the firmware configuration matches the physical wiring and that the correct firmware was flashed.
QMK’s Hand-Wiring Guide discusses these checks for hand-wired keyboards. On a PCB-based kit, use its own troubleshooting instructions as well.
Choose switches and keycaps by fit, then preference
First eliminate anything that does not match the PCB, layout, stabilizers, or key positions. Once compatibility is confirmed, choose switches for the typing feel and sound you prefer, and keycaps for the layout coverage and sizes you need. There is no universal best switch, case material, or sound profile established here; preference and the exact build determine those choices.
Likewise, choose a layout based on the dedicated keys you use versus the footprint you want. If you are new to layers, make sure the firmware workflow lets you configure the keys you need and that you can follow the board’s setup instructions.
