Neither is guaranteed to look identical on every device; if the star conveys a rating or control, also give it an accessible name that states its meaning.
What is the difference between a Unicode star and a star emoji?
Unicode assigns characters and presentation sequences; it does not supply one fixed picture for every screen. The visible shape—the glyph—comes from the font or emoji implementation used by a device or app. So “Unicode star” and “star emoji” usually refer to different presentation styles, not separate encoding systems.

For eligible emoji characters, Unicode defines two variation selectors: U+FE0E, called VS15, requests text presentation; U+FE0F, called VS16, requests emoji presentation. These are requests, not guarantees. The result depends on the character, software, fonts, and platform defaults. The Unicode Technical Standard #51 defines the selectors, and the Unicode Consortium’s emoji FAQ explains that appearance can vary across platforms.

Where the star character supports these presentation sequences, place the selector immediately after the character. For example, a commonly used black star is U+2605:

The marks after the star are invisible selectors, so the examples may look alike in some editors or on some devices. You can insert them by their Unicode code points in software that supports Unicode input, or copy the examples into your text and verify the result in the intended app. A selector only requests a style; it cannot force every platform to render the character the same way.
Which style should you use?

The visual distinction is practical: a text-style glyph is usually colored through text styling, while emoji artwork has its own color design and may not respond to ordinary text-color changes. How should meaningful stars be made accessible?
Do not rely on the symbol’s shape or the screen reader’s default name to explain what it means. A star used to mark a favorite should have an accessible name that identifies it as a favorite control. A rating should expose its value, such as “4 out of 5 stars,” through an appropriate text alternative or accessible semantics.
W3C WAI’s H86 technique notes that an emoji’s predefined name might not match the author’s intended meaning and recommends an equivalent text alternative. Its ARIA24 technique discusses identifying meaningful icon-font symbols, including a star used to signify a favorite. These are informative techniques; choose an implementation that communicates the star’s actual purpose or value to assistive technology.

What to check before publishing
- Preview the star in the apps, browsers, and devices where readers will see it; the glyph and emoji artwork can vary.
- Check whether the character supports presentation selectors and whether the target environment honors them.
- Confirm the star’s color remains legible against its background, especially when text styling or emoji artwork differs from your expectation.
- If the star carries meaning, test its accessible name and value with assistive technology rather than assuming its visual appearance is self-explanatory.
