Follow the delivery operator’s instructions, keep people and pets well away while the drone is active, and never touch or try to catch it. Wait until it has departed before collecting the parcel, and contact the operator through its app or support channel if the delivery is diverted or the aircraft lands unexpectedly. Procedures vary by service and address.
Before the drone arrives
- Check the order and delivery instructions. Confirm the address and designated delivery point in the service’s app or notifications. Some services may let eligible customers choose or change that point; Amazon describes this option for its own service in its drone delivery materials.
- Clear the designated area. Move people, pets, vehicles, loose items, and other obstacles away while the drone approaches. Amazon Prime Air says its onboard system checks the intended delivery point for people, animals, vehicles, and obstacles.
- Do not add your own equipment or procedure. Use a landing marker, platform, or other setup only if the operator explicitly asks you to. The official materials cited here do not establish that household equipment is required.
What to do while the drone is active
- Stay well clear. Do not reach for, touch, catch, or step under the aircraft while it is descending, delivering, or departing.
- Keep children and pets inside or well away from the delivery area, and discourage onlookers from gathering around it.
- Let the aircraft complete its delivery and departure without trying to guide or interfere with it. The FAA’s bystander guidance says never to reach for a flying drone and to stay well clear while it is activated.
FAA Safety Briefing associate editor Rebekah Waters, writing for drone pilots about briefing friends and family who watch a flight, put the point this way: “Remind them that, even if it looks like a toy, your drone is an aircraft.” Commercial delivery aircraft vary in type and size; the FAA says the average wingspan cited for commercial delivery drones is about five feet. Do not assume one is toy-sized or safe to approach.

How an ordinary delivery may work
The handoff depends on the operator. In one example, an Amazon environmental assessment describes an enrolled customer ordering an eligible item, a drone flying to the home, descending to the delivery location, leaving the package, and rising to return to its origin. That is not a universal promise: another service may place or release a parcel differently, and the customer-facing instructions for the order should guide you.

If the drone diverts or lands somewhere unexpected
- Leave the aircraft alone. Do not approach, touch, move, or try to recover it, and do not enter a hazardous area to reach the package.
- Check the app or contact the operator. Follow its directions for a missed delivery, diversion, or unexpected landing. There is no universal recipient emergency number or recovery process established across services.
- Use local emergency services if someone faces immediate danger. The operator is responsible for handling the aircraft; its recovery team may coordinate access with residents or authorities.
Amazon Prime Air says that weather, communications or air-traffic events, and certain system failures can lead to a return or a safe contingent landing. The operator, not the recipient, handles aircraft recovery.
What the FAA’s rules do—and do not—mean for recipients
For the commercial package-delivery operations described by the FAA, operators need a Part 135 certificate and airspace authorization. The FAA also describes operator responsibilities that include meeting state and local requirements, informing communities, establishing delivery infrastructure, complying with environmental review requirements, and responding to public inquiries. These are operator obligations; they do not replace the instructions for a particular order.

The FAA says commercial delivery flight paths must be below 400 feet. Its package-delivery page, last updated September 3, 2026, reports more than 20 environmental assessments for individual proposals, each resulting in a Finding of No Significant Impact. That environmental-review finding is not a claim that every delivery event is risk-free. The cited sources do not establish a recipient injury-rate or incident-rate statistic.

What drone cameras mean for privacy
Amazon Prime Air says its cameras and other sensors support navigation, obstacle avoidance, and safe delivery. The company also says its onboard cameras are not viewed live or monitored by a person and that delivery data is used for safety and improving customer experience. These are Amazon’s statements about its own operations, not a guarantee about other providers. Check the privacy information for the service handling your delivery.

Availability, delivery points, handoff, contingency handling, and privacy disclosures are not necessarily the same across operators. For example, DoorDash described a separate program with its own ground infrastructure and handoff systems in a July 2026 announcement. Use the order’s app and provider materials rather than assuming one company’s process applies to another.

- Delivery-point control: Can you select or edit the designated point?
- Handoff: How does the provider place or release the parcel, and how does it indicate that the aircraft has departed?
- Contingencies: What does the app say to do after a missed delivery, diversion, or unexpected landing?
- Privacy: What sensors are used, whether imagery is reviewed, and how delivery data is used.
