Use a star in digital design when it communicates a rating, favorite, featured item, or other clearly defined state—not simply to make an interface look more current. Keep its meaning consistent, match its style to the rest of your icon system, and test it with the people who will use it. No cited design guidance establishes that a particular star shape is objectively modern or dated; the practical goal is a star that feels intentional because it fits its function and context.
How do I use a star in a website design without making it look dated?
Start by deciding what the star means. It might show a rating, mark a favorite, identify a featured item, indicate a reward, or serve as decoration. Those uses are not interchangeable: if one star means “save this” in one place and “editor’s pick” in another, users may not know what will happen when they interact with it.

Apple identifies the star as a recognizable ranking symbol, so it is a reasonable choice for a rating scale. That does not make every star self-explanatory: a star shown beside a product score may read as a rating, while an unlabeled star button could mean favorite, bookmark, or something else. Make the star part of the interface, not an added effect
A restrained star can look at home in a current interface when its proportions, stroke, spacing, and color follow the same visual rules as nearby icons. This is a design judgment, not a claim that official guidance measures whether a star looks trendy. Avoid layering gradients, shadows, multiple outlines, or repeated sparkle motifs just to make the symbol seem fresh. Add a treatment only when it helps communicate state or hierarchy.
Use icons as functional UI when they help people identify an action, rating, or state. If a star is purely decorative, keep it subordinate to the content. Should I use a filled star or an outline star?
Choose the treatment that best communicates the star’s role and matches your product’s icon family. Microsoft Fluent 2 describes regular icons as useful for wayfinding and filled icons as suitable for selected states or cases needing more visual weight. Keep scale, alignment, and artwork consistent
Match the star’s visual weight and scale to the icons around it. A star that is much larger, heavier, or more decorative than adjacent controls can draw attention away from the content or suggest a different level of importance. Prefer scalable vector artwork when practical: the UAE Design System recommends SVG for responsive flexibility and color changes. Make interactive icons large enough for their context, as Microsoft’s guidance advises.

Decide whether the star is decorative or conveys information. If nearby visible text already gives the same information, the decorative star can be hidden from screen readers to avoid repetition. If the star is the only way to understand or operate a control, provide a meaningful accessible name or a visible label. Make sure an interactive control’s accessible name describes its purpose, not merely its appearance—for example, what it does rather than just “star.”

The U.S. Web Design System recommends a minimum contrast ratio of 3:1 for icons against their background. Check the actual icon, background, size, and state in your implementation; a design-system example does not guarantee that a particular layout meets the requirement. U.S. Web Design System: Icon.
- Use text when a star’s action or status could be interpreted in more than one way.
- Make selected and unselected states distinguishable without color alone.
- Keep decorative icons from repeating information already announced by assistive technology.
- Test the symbol and its label with the intended audience and in the interface where it will appear.
When is a star decoration rather than useful UI?
If the star does not help users identify a rating, action, or state, treat it as decoration—and use it sparingly. Decorative stars should not compete with the page’s main content or resemble a control that users might try to activate. If the symbol is functional, make its purpose and state clear; if its meaning is uncertain, a label is more useful than extra visual effects.
The UAE Design System reports that its selected Phosphor collection contains 1,512 icons across five styles—light, regular, bold, filled, and dual-tone—amounting to about 9,072 style variants.
