Understanding Keyboard Sizes: Find the Right Layout and Switch Type

Find the keyboard layout that fits your desk and key habits, from full-size and TKL to 75%, 65%, and 60%, and learn what linear, tactile, and clicky switches mean.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The right keyboard size depends on which keys you use every day, how much desk space you have, and whether you are willing to access missing keys through Fn-layer shortcuts. Choose a full-size or 96% layout if you regularly enter numbers; choose TKL if you want dedicated arrows and a function row without a numpad; and consider 75%, 65%, or 60% if a smaller footprint matters more than having every key available directly. Switch type is a separate choice: linear, tactile, and clicky describe different feedback and sound, not a guaranteed typing or gaming advantage.

Size labels are approximate conventions, not precise standards. Compare the actual key diagram and switch specifications for the model you are considering.

How keyboard sizes differ

Keyboard size is best understood by the key groups a layout retains—not just its external dimensions. RTINGS describes size categories as general guidelines rather than strict standards; a typical full-size board has 104–108 keys, while a typical TKL has about 87. Counts vary with physical layout and manufacturer, so use them as orientation rather than a specification.

Layout Typical key groups Good fit when Main trade-off
Full-size / 100% Alphanumeric keys, function row, navigation keys, arrows, and numpad You regularly enter numbers or want each key group dedicated Largest footprint; may leave less room for mouse movement
Compact 96% Nearly all full-size key groups in a tighter arrangement You need a numpad but want to reduce width Compressed gaps can make clusters less distinct by touch
TKL / 80% Function row, arrows, and navigation cluster; no numpad You want familiar dedicated keys but do not need a numpad Wider than more compact formats
75% Usually a function row and arrows, with keys packed more tightly You want much of TKL functionality in less width Right-side and navigation keys vary by model
65% Usually arrows and a small right-side cluster; commonly no dedicated function row You want a compact board but use dedicated arrow keys Function keys commonly require an Fn layer; right-side keys vary
60% Main alphanumeric area and modifiers A minimal footprint matters and you are comfortable with layers Arrows, function, and navigation keys are typically not dedicated
40% Very compact layouts, often without a number row You deliberately want an enthusiast layout and extensive layers Requires substantial adaptation and layer use

OSHID lists approximate counts of 104–108 for full-size, 87–88 for TKL, 82–84 for 75%, 66–68 for 65%, and about 61 for 60%. ISO and JIS layouts can change those counts. RTINGS and OSHID both caution that categories are approximate; consult the manufacturer’s layout diagram for the specific board (RTINGS keyboard size guide; OSHID keyboard layouts guide).

Which keyboard size should you choose?

Choose full-size or 96% for frequent number entry

The numpad is the clearest practical dividing line. If your work regularly involves entering figures, a full-size board gives you a dedicated number pad and the usual navigation and function groups. A 96% board keeps nearly all of those keys while compressing the layout. That tighter arrangement saves space, but narrower gaps between clusters may make it less obvious where one group ends and another begins when navigating by touch.

Choose TKL if you want dedicated keys but not a numpad

Tenkeyless removes the numpad while retaining the function row, arrow keys, and navigation cluster. It is a straightforward option if those keys matter to you but the number pad does not. As a documented example, a CHERRY brochure dated 2020-05-15 lists its MX BOARD 1.0 TKL as a wired mechanical board with 87 keys and approximate dimensions of 370 × 150 × 25 mm. Those are specifications in that brochure, not evidence of current stock, pricing, or present-day market standing (CHERRY product brochure).

Choose 75% or 65% to reduce width while keeping useful keys

A 75% layout usually retains the function row and arrow keys but packs the board more tightly than TKL. A 65% commonly keeps dedicated arrows and drops the function row, which is then accessed through an Fn layer. The exact right-side keys differ among models, so check the diagram rather than assuming every board with the same percentage has the same arrangement.

Choose 60% or 40% only if layers suit your workflow

A 60% board reduces the physical layout to the main typing area and modifiers; arrow, function, and navigation access typically moves to key combinations on a layer. A 40% layout is more specialized and often removes the number row as well. These formats can save substantial desk space, but they make more functions dependent on remembering and using layers.

How to compare layouts before buying

Do not decide by the percentage printed in a product name alone. Compare the actual board on the keys and constraints that affect your use:

  • Numpad: Do you enter numbers often enough to need dedicated keys?
  • Arrows: Are dedicated arrow keys important, or would layer shortcuts work for you?
  • Function row: Do you use F-keys directly, or can you reach them through an Fn layer?
  • Navigation and editing keys: Check the placement and availability of keys you use, such as Home, End, and Delete.
  • Width and desk space: Consider the board alongside your mouse area and normal seating position.
  • Spacing and placement: Tight clusters can save width but may be less distinct by touch; inspect the exact arrangement.
  • Physical layout and keycaps: Verify ANSI, ISO, or JIS and whether replacement keycaps support that arrangement.
  • Layers: Confirm which missing keys are available through Fn combinations and whether those shortcuts suit your habits.

ANSI, ISO, and JIS are physical layouts, not sizes

Size describes which key groups are present. ANSI, ISO, and JIS describe the physical shapes and placement of keys, so a board can be, for example, both TKL and ISO. OSHID describes ANSI as having a wide horizontal Enter key and a long left Shift; ISO uses a tall, L-shaped Enter and a shorter left Shift with an additional key; JIS adds several keys around the spacebar area. Those differences can affect both familiarity and keycap compatibility.

A keycap kit that fits one physical layout may not include the right Enter, left Shift, bottom-row modifier widths, or JIS spacebar-row keys for another. Check the kit’s compatibility details rather than assuming a generic set fits every board (OSHID keyboard layouts guide). The public ISO/IEC 9995-1 page says the standard identifies keyboard sections and specifies their general shape and relative placement; it also addresses keycap markings (ISO/IEC 9995-1). Physical layout is also distinct from the logical language mapping configured on a computer.

What linear, tactile, and clicky switches feel like

Switch labels describe the feedback mechanism and sound. They do not, by themselves, establish that a switch will make someone type faster, play better, or feel more comfortable. The examples below are CHERRY’s descriptions of its own MX switches; color names are not universal specifications across manufacturers.

Best Value
Logitech MX Mechanical Wireless Illuminated Keyboard Tactile - Graphite
  • Tactile Quiet mechanical key switches with a satisfying tactile bump you feel - for precise feedback, reactive key reset, and less noise so your typing doesn't disturb those around you
  • Low-profile keys, more comfort: A keyboard layout designed for effortless precision, with a full-size form factor and low-profile mechanical switches for better ergonomics
  • Smart illumination: Backlit keys light up the moment your hands approach the cordless keyboard and automatically adjust to suit changing lighting conditions
  • Faster workflow, more customization: Customize Fn keys, assign backlighting effects, enable Flow cross-computer, multi-device control, and more in the improved Logi Options+ (1)
  • Multi-device, multi-OS: Pair MX Mechanical Bluetooth wireless keyboard with up to 3 devices on nearly any operating system via Bluetooth Low Energy or included Logi Bolt receiver(2)
Switch feel What to expect CHERRY example
Linear Smooth travel without a tactile bump or click MX Red: linear, without a click
Tactile A noticeable bump without necessarily producing an audible click MX Brown: tactile, without a click
Clicky Tactile feedback accompanied by an audible click MX Blue: tactile, with an audible click
Silent variant Quieter action through a manufacturer-specific mechanism or dampening Check the exact switch specification; color alone does not establish silence

CHERRY’s product guidance describes MX Brown this way: “You can achieve tangible feedback without a click, for example, with the MX BROWN.” That is a description of its product, not a universal definition of every brown switch (CHERRY MX 2.0S).

How to compare switches on a specific board

Once you know which feel you prefer, compare the actual switch specifications rather than relying on a color or category name alone:

  • Look up the manufacturer’s exact descriptions of feedback and sound.
  • Compare actuation force and travel distance where the manufacturer provides them.
  • Check whether the keyboard lets you change switches and which switches it supports.
  • If possible, try a physical sampler. CHERRY’s MX Experience Box contains ten variants across linear, tactile, clicky, and silent characteristics; it does not establish that those switches are compatible with every keyboard (CHERRY MX Experience Box).

For instance, the 2020 CHERRY MX BOARD 1.0 TKL brochure specifies a red linear switch rated at 45 cN. Treat that as the specification for the model in that dated brochure, not as a rating for TKL boards or red switches generally.

A simple decision path

  1. Decide whether you need a numpad. If you use one frequently, start with full-size or 96%; otherwise, consider TKL or smaller.
  2. Choose which keys must remain dedicated. If you want arrows and a function row, TKL or 75% is a natural starting point. If arrows are enough, inspect 65% layouts. If you are comfortable with layers, consider 60% or a more specialized 40% board.
  3. Check the real layout diagram. Confirm key groups, right-side keys, cluster spacing, physical standard, and the layer shortcuts for functions you use.
  4. Choose a switch by feel and sound. Compare the exact switch specifications, including force and travel, and try switches if a sampler is available to you.
