If you want Chrome itself easy to launch, pin it to the taskbar instead. These are different shortcuts: one opens a website, while the other launches the browser.
Choose the shortcut you need

Create a desktop shortcut for a website
- Open Chrome and go to the website you want to launch.
- Select the three-dot More menu.
- Select Cast, save and share, then Create shortcut.
- Keep the suggested name or enter a different one, then select Create.
Chrome creates a shortcut that opens that site. Google documents this workflow in its instructions for creating website shortcuts.

Install a website as an app instead
Some websites can be installed as web apps, which provide an app-like way to open the site. If the option is available, open the site and select More > Cast, save and share > Install page as app. You may also see an Install control in Chrome’s address bar. Follow the prompts shown by Chrome.

- In Chrome’s address bar, enter
chrome://appsand press Enter. - Right-click the installed app and select Create shortcut.
- Choose where to place the shortcut, including the desktop if offered, and select Create.
Installation is not available for every site. Google explains the install and shortcut options in its web apps instructions.

Pin Chrome itself to the Windows taskbar
To make the browser easy to launch, use either documented Windows route:
- From an open Chrome window: Right-click Chrome’s taskbar icon and select Pin to taskbar.
- From Start: Find Chrome in the Start menu, right-click it, and select Pin to taskbar.
Google’s Chrome shortcut instructions cover taskbar pinning. They do not provide a separate current procedure for placing Chrome itself on the Windows desktop.
