An ASR rule could be blocking Outlook from handing a Teams meeting link to an app, but the link failing is not enough to confirm that. First identify where the failure happens: a link that will not open the Teams app points to a local handoff or link-routing issue; a Teams page that opens but denies entry points to sign-in or meeting-access policies. Confirm an ASR cause with a matching Defender event on the affected device.
First identify where the join attempt fails
When you select a Teams meeting link in Outlook, note exactly what appears. Microsoft documents an Outlook flow that opens a browser join page, where a preference can let future meeting links open the associated Teams desktop app.

| What happens | Where to investigate |
|---|---|
| Nothing happens, or the browser opens but the Teams desktop app does not | Local link handling, app handoff, and—if device evidence supports it—the Office communication app child-process ASR rule. |
| A browser or Teams page opens, but you are told to sign in or that your account lacks access | Teams authentication, anonymous-join, external-access, and meeting policies. An access denial alone does not establish an ASR block. |
| A security notification appears | Record its wording and time, then ask the administrator to check Defender reporting for the affected device and the relevant process chain. |
These are separate diagnostic branches: a link can reach Teams successfully and still be rejected by a meeting policy.

What the ASR rule does—and what it does not prove
Microsoft identifies attack surface reduction (ASR) rule 26190899-1602-49e8-8b27-eb1d0a1ce869 as “Block Office communication application from creating child processes.” Its documented scope includes Outlook, Skype, and Teams, and Microsoft says the rule prevents those Office communication apps from launching child processes. See Microsoft’s ASR rule documentation.

- Digital Stereo Sound: Fine-tuned drivers provide enhanced digital audio for music, calls, meetings and more
- Rotating Noise Canceling Mic: Minimizes unwanted background noise for clear conversations; the rotating boom arm can be tucked out of the way when you’re not using it
- Handy In-line Controls: Simple in-line controls on the headset cable let you adjust the volume or mute calls without disruption
- Plug-and-Play USB Computer Headset: Simply plug the USB-A connector into your computer and you’re ready to talk or listen without the need to install software
- Padded Comfort: Comfortable headphones with adjustable headband features swivel-mounted, leatherette ear cushions for hours of comfort and is easy to clean
That description makes the rule a plausible cause of a failed Outlook-to-Teams desktop handoff, but it does not establish that every Teams meeting link uses a child-process launch that this rule blocks. Do not attribute an individual failure to ASR without a matching detection or equivalent device evidence.
Ask the administrator to verify a device event
Have your Defender for Endpoint or Defender Antivirus administrator check ASR reporting on the affected device for the rule ID above. The useful details are the event timestamp, action taken, initiating process, and blocked child process. Compare the event time with the failed click. The rule documentation describes the rule; it does not diagnose a particular device.

If the Teams app does not open from the link
Use the browser join page to check the app handoff
If Outlook opens a browser join page, Microsoft documents a browser preference that allows teams.microsoft.com to open the associated desktop app for future meeting links. Follow the instructions in Microsoft’s guide to opening Outlook Teams meeting links in the desktop app. If the preference or prompt is controlled by your organization, ask IT to manage it rather than changing managed settings yourself.
Check which browser handles Outlook links
Outlook and Teams link-opening behavior can be directed to Microsoft Edge or the system-default browser, depending on the supported client and configuration. If the link opens an unexpected browser, check the applicable setting or policy using Microsoft’s Outlook and Teams web-link settings documentation. Browser routing is a separate variable to investigate; changing it is not a demonstrated fix for an ASR block.

Leave registry changes to managed IT
Microsoft’s desktop-app guide also documents registry values under HKEY_CURRENT_USERSOFTWAREMicrosoftOfficeTeams for managed configuration. Because this changes the Windows registry, use Microsoft’s backup caution and have your organization’s IT administrator assess and manage the change where appropriate.
If Teams opens but says you cannot join
An account or access error after the page opens points to a different problem than a failed app handoff. Microsoft documents messages such as “You need to be signed in to Teams to access this meeting. Sign in with a work or school account and try joining again” and “The account you’re using doesn’t have access to this meeting. Sign in with the account the invite was sent to and try again.” These can result from anonymous-join or external-access settings. See Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance for external participants.

The right policy check depends on who is joining. An anonymous participant, an authenticated user from another organization, a guest, and a member joining an external organization’s meeting may be governed differently. The organizer’s meeting settings and the organizations’ external-domain or join policies can affect access. Administrators can review the available choices in Microsoft’s guide to preventing users from joining external Teams meetings.
What to send your IT or security administrator
- The affected device and the time you clicked the Outlook meeting link.
- What happened next: no response, browser only, Teams opened, access denied, or a security notification.
- The exact error text, if one appeared, and whether you were signed in with the account that received the invitation.
- For a suspected ASR block, a request to check the rule ID
26190899-1602-49e8-8b27-eb1d0a1ce869and the event’s action and process details.
Do not ask for the ASR rule to be disabled across the organization as a first response. The security administrator should validate whether it blocked the relevant process and choose an approved policy exception or configuration approach consistent with organizational requirements. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not prescribe a blanket exception for Teams meeting links.
