“Unable to connect to Wi-Fi” can mean a device cannot join the wireless network, or it has joined Wi-Fi but cannot reach the internet. Start with the reversible checks: turn Wi-Fi on, turn Airplane Mode off, rejoin the network with its current password, and restart the affected device. Then test another device on the same Wi-Fi and the affected device on a different network. Those two comparisons help show whether the problem is the device, the local network, or the internet connection.
First determine what “unable to connect” means
Look at the device’s Wi-Fi status. If it will not join the network, check its settings, saved credentials, signal, and compatibility. If it says it is connected but webpages and apps cannot reach the internet, the device may have joined the router successfully while the router, modem, or internet service is having trouble.

Use the pattern of failures to narrow the cause:
- Only one device fails on a Wi-Fi network that works for others: focus on that device’s settings, saved network, adapter or software.
- Several devices fail on the same Wi-Fi: investigate the router, modem, network configuration, or ISP.
- The affected device fails on multiple unrelated Wi-Fi networks: suspect a device-side issue and contact its manufacturer if basic checks do not help.
- The device joins Wi-Fi but has no internet: test another device and check the router, modem, and service status.
These comparisons are more useful than guessing based on the error message alone. Microsoft and Apple both recommend testing other devices or networks to distinguish device problems from network problems: Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide and Apple’s iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi guidance.

- Check Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode. Turn Wi-Fi on and Airplane Mode off. On Android, also check that the connection setting you intend to use is enabled; exact labels vary by manufacturer and Android version. If Wi-Fi is greyed out on an iPhone or iPad, Apple advises restarting the device.
- Rejoin the intended network. Confirm its name and enter the current password. A password changed on the router will make an old saved password fail. On Windows or Apple devices, forgetting the saved network and joining again can clear stale connection details, but it also removes the saved password.
- Move closer to the router. A weak signal can prevent a stable connection. Check that the router is powered on and that the network is actually in range.
- Restart the affected device. This is a simple way to clear a temporary software or radio-state problem before changing deeper settings.
- Check whether the network is visible. If it is missing, confirm the router is on and consider whether the network is hidden, restricted, or broadcasting on a band the device does not support.
If the Wi-Fi network is missing or won’t accept the device
When a network does not appear in the list, check the router’s power and proximity first. Some networks are hidden or limited to approved devices. If the router uses separate frequency bands, the device may support one but not another. Apple and Microsoft recommend checking band compatibility and, where available, trying another supported frequency.

If the network appears but the device cannot join, verify the password with the person who manages the router. On school or workplace Wi-Fi, access rules may require an account, certificate, or administrator approval; ask the network administrator rather than changing settings on a managed device.
For a saved network that may have outdated details, use the device’s “Forget” option and reconnect with the current password. On Apple devices, forgetting a network removes its saved password, and iCloud Keychain may propagate that change to other devices using the same Apple Account. Supervised or managed Apple devices may not permit forgetting the network.

Use two tests to isolate the device from the network
- Try another phone or computer on the same Wi-Fi. If it connects normally, the router and internet connection are less likely to be the sole cause; focus on the original device.
- Try the affected device on a different Wi-Fi network. If it works elsewhere, the issue is likely specific to the first network or its settings. If it cannot join any Wi-Fi network, contact the device maker after basic troubleshooting.
If only one managed network causes trouble, contact its administrator. If all devices are affected on a home network, check the router and modem and ask the ISP whether there is an outage.

A Wi-Fi connection is the local wireless link between your device and the router; it does not guarantee that the router can reach the internet. If several devices connect to Wi-Fi but none can load online services, the fault may lie with the modem, router’s internet connection, or ISP rather than with each device.

On Windows, Microsoft describes pinging the default gateway as a way to check whether the PC can reach the router. A reply confirms that local path, but does not prove internet service is working. If a device has an Ethernet port, a wired connection can offer another clue: Microsoft says that internet access over Ethernet points to the Wi-Fi router as the source of the connection problem. It is a troubleshooting indication, not a guarantee for every network setup. If the PC has no Ethernet port, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is an optional way to make that test; it is not a Wi-Fi repair.
Restart the modem and router carefully
If several devices are affected, restarting network equipment can refresh the connection. It will temporarily disconnect everyone using that Wi-Fi. Follow the router or modem maker’s instructions if they differ; Microsoft’s general sequence is:

Platform-specific checks
Windows 10 and Windows 11
Check the Wi-Fi toggle and Airplane Mode, then use Windows’ built-in troubleshooting guidance. Windows 11 offers troubleshooting through Get Help; Microsoft also lists a Settings troubleshooting path in its support article. Forget and rejoin the network if its saved details may be stale. If basic checks fail, investigate the Wi-Fi adapter and its driver using the PC maker’s guidance. Menu labels and available options can differ by Windows version and device.
Network reset is a later step, not a first response. Microsoft says it removes and reinstalls network adapters and restores network settings. You may need to set up VPN or virtual network software again afterward.

Android
Check that Wi-Fi is enabled, move closer to the router, and compare with another device or network. Google’s general guidance covers checking Wi-Fi and mobile-data state and improving signal by moving closer. The exact Settings names vary by Android build and device maker.
iPhone and iPad
Check Wi-Fi and Airplane Mode, confirm the network’s status, and test another network. Apple also advises checking router range, firmware, compatibility, and available frequency bands. If a VPN or security app may be interfering, test without it only if doing so is appropriate for your device and network.
Save resets and advanced changes for later
Forgetting one network is less disruptive than resetting all network settings, but it still deletes that network’s saved password. A full network reset should come only after simpler checks. Apple warns that resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as cellular, VPN, and APN settings. On school or work equipment, consult IT before resetting anything.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteRouter firmware updates and advanced wireless settings should follow the router maker’s documentation. If evidence points to a failing or unsupported router and its configuration and firmware checks do not resolve the issue, a replacement may be worth considering. Check compatibility, supported frequency bands, coverage for the home’s layout, and ongoing security and firmware support rather than choosing on speed claims alone.
Quick Recap
