Put bookshelf speakers on stands if that is the simplest way to get their tweeters near your seated ear height, keep them stable, and place them freely in the room. A shelf or cabinet can work just as well when it meets those needs; stands are an option, not a requirement. Floorstanding speakers ordinarily do not need separate stands. Check your speaker’s manual because mounting and placement guidance varies by model.
What stands can—and cannot—do
A stand can raise a speaker to a suitable listening height and make it easier to position independently of furniture. That flexibility can help when a shelf is too low, too close to a wall, or in a poor spot relative to the listening seat. A stable shelf or cabinet remains a reasonable alternative if it provides appropriate height and placement.

Focal recommends stands for its bookshelf speakers and says supplied glides can be used on shelves or cabinets to stabilize the speaker and mechanically decouple it from the surface. KEF also discusses raised-surface placement and recommends small isolation feet or pads for shelf placement. Set stand height for your listening seat
- Measure seated ear height. Sit in your normal listening position and measure from the floor to your ears.
- Find the tweeter’s position within the speaker. Measure from the speaker’s bottom to the center of its tweeter or high-frequency driver.
- Estimate the needed stand height. Subtract the tweeter measurement from your seated ear height. The result is a starting point for stand height; confirm how the stand’s top plate and the speaker’s feet affect the final position.
- Check the speaker’s manual. Follow model-specific placement and mounting instructions, including any guidance for shelves, glides, or attachment hardware.
Paradigm and Cambridge Audio both recommend placing the tweeter or high-frequency driver approximately at ear level in the normal seated listening position. The right stand height therefore depends on both your seated ear height and the tweeter’s position in the speaker, not on a single standard size. Klipsch lists its KS bookshelf stands in 24-inch and 28-inch heights, but those are product specifications, not universal height recommendations for every room or listener.
Account for the room, not just speaker height
Once the support is settled, consider how far the speakers are from each other, the listening seat, and nearby walls. Place them symmetrically around the main seat where practical, then adjust spacing and toe-in by listening. Paradigm advises avoiding corners because they can overemphasize bass and reduce clarity; treat that as a starting point rather than a rule for every room. Cambridge Audio’s Head of Acoustics, Ollie Marshall, offers a modest toe-in starting point: “Usually 10 to 15 degrees is about right.” That is guidance for speaker positioning, not a stand-height or stand-angle specification.

When each setup makes sense
Choose stands when
- Your current shelf or furniture puts the tweeters well above or below seated ear height.
- You need more freedom to position the speakers relative to the walls, each other, and the listening seat.
- The stand’s top plate, attachment method, and footprint are compatible with your speaker and room.
Use a shelf or cabinet when
- It gives you suitable height and placement without making the speakers unstable.
- The surface does not create distracting rattles, and you can follow the speaker maker’s instructions for feet or glides.
- A stand would add clutter or take up floor space without solving a placement problem.
Check mounting compatibility before buying
Compare the speaker’s base and attachment points with the stand’s top plate and mounting options. Do not assume all bookshelf speakers attach to stands the same way. Klipsch notes threaded inserts for future powered-speaker models on its stand product page; that detail should not be generalized to other speakers.
