First determine whether the failure is limited to video, to the laptop, or to the entire network. Testing an ordinary website, webmail, another device and a phone hotspot identifies the fault far faster than repeatedly refreshing a player.
Identify the scope before changing settings
Record the exact message first. “This site can’t be reached,” ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, ERR_CONNECTION_RESET, timeouts, certificate warnings, a black player and endless buffering point to different layers.

- Open a normal search site and webmail.
- Try two streaming services, then a non-browser internet application.
- Test the same sites in a second browser.
- Use a phone connected to the same Wi-Fi, and test another device if available.
- Connect the laptop to a phone hotspot. Ethernet is another useful comparison.

Try the low-risk fixes first
- Close the browser completely, reopen it and restart the laptop.
- Restart the modem and router. Wait for their normal connection lights before testing again; Microsoft and Google both recommend this basic comparison.
- On hotel, airport, school or café Wi-Fi, open a normal webpage and complete any captive-portal sign-in.
- Check Settings → Time & language → Date & time. Enable automatic time and time zone. Do not bypass a certificate warning; an incorrect clock, HTTPS inspection or an unsafe connection must be investigated.
- Open Start, search Get Help, and run the Network and Internet troubleshooter. Apply its repair, restart and retest. It is a useful first check, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
Repair the browser and separate access from playback
Use a clean browser session
In Chrome, close and reopen the browser, then test an Incognito window. If streaming works there, an extension or stored site data is the leading suspect. Disable ad blockers, privacy or script blockers, download managers and antivirus extensions one at a time. Clear cached images/files and cookies for the affected service, then restart the browser. Edge and Firefox use equivalent private-window, extension, site-data and reset controls.

When the page loads but video does not
Test another browser, clear data for that service and update/restart the browser. In Chrome, temporarily test hardware acceleration at Settings → System → Use hardware acceleration when available; switch it off, restart Chrome, and test once. Re-enable it if it makes no difference. Google describes this setting and browser/network separation here: Chrome crashes and hardware acceleration. Different services can have different media and DRM requirements, so a player failure on one site does not prove that Windows networking is broken.
Check proxy, VPN and filtering
Open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Normally leave Automatically detect settings enabled and remove a manual proxy that you do not recognize. Microsoft’s proxy documentation is at Use a proxy server in Windows.

Disconnect a VPN application or browser extension for one controlled test. A VPN can alter routing, DNS and apparent location, and some streaming services restrict VPN/proxy traffic; do not buy one as a default fix. On a work or school laptop, proxy and filtering may be intentional—ask IT rather than changing policy.
Review Windows Security and any third-party antivirus web-protection or HTTPS-inspection feature. If the vendor offers a controlled pause, note the product, pause only that web feature, test one site, and immediately re-enable it. Then add a documented exception or contact the vendor. Never leave a firewall or antivirus disabled. Router parental controls, employer policies and public-network filtering can also block video domains.

Reset Windows networking from an elevated Command Prompt
Save work, open Start, type Command Prompt, choose Run as administrator, and run each line in order:
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdnsRestart Windows afterward. The Winsock and TCP/IP resets repair networking components; release/renew obtains a DHCP address again; ipconfig /flushdns clears the laptop’s DNS cache but does not change the DNS provider. Copy the commands exactly and avoid “one-click network repair” downloads. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows connectivity guide.

Consider DNS only when the symptoms fit
DNS is plausible when domain-name errors occur across browsers and applications, some sites resolve while others do not, or the laptop works on another network. Windows 11 exposes DNS and DNS-over-HTTPS controls in network settings; see Windows network settings and tasks. Test the router’s default DNS first. If you change providers, use the provider’s current official documentation and record the old setting so you can revert. DNS changes do not repair a browser extension, firewall rule, Wi-Fi fault, DRM problem, account restriction or intentional school/work block, and they are not guaranteed speed or privacy upgrades.

Use Network reset only near the end
After testing another browser and network, checking proxy/VPN/security software and running the commands, use Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Network reset → Reset now. Record Wi-Fi passwords and VPN or virtual-network details first. Microsoft warns that this reinstalls network adapters, restores defaults, may require VPN clients or Hyper-V switches to be configured again, and can make known networks use a public profile: Network reset guidance.

Investigate the adapter or a recent update
If the failure began immediately after Windows or a driver update, check Settings → Windows Update → Advanced options → Optional updates and the laptop maker’s support page for the exact model. In Device Manager → Network adapters, inspect the adapter and driver status. Uninstalling an adapter and restarting can help, but do it only when you have a recovery path (Ethernet, another device or the manufacturer’s driver). Do not use generic driver-download sites.
Know when to escalate
- Streaming provider: only one legitimate service fails after clean-browser tests.
- ISP or router manufacturer: multiple devices fail on the same home network, including over Ethernet.
- Laptop manufacturer: the problem follows this laptop across Wi-Fi, Ethernet and hotspot, or the adapter disappears repeatedly.
- Work/school IT: the device is managed or filtering is intentional.
- Microsoft: Windows repair, adapter checks and Network reset do not help; official support is support.microsoft.com.
Stop and seek help promptly if many legitimate sites show certificate warnings, malware or an unauthorized proxy is suspected, or the issue persists across several networks after the steps above.
