Yes—the “LG will make your TV stupid if you reject its privacy policy” story was real, but it was a May 21, 2014 report, not a 2026 product announcement. One owner said a software update followed by refusal of LG’s privacy terms left network features such as iPlayer, Skype and some 3D-related services unusable. The television was not rendered a dead screen: the reported loss concerned connected smart functions. Modern LG televisions use newer webOS software, agreements and controls, so the exact result now depends on model, country, software version and the services you want.
What happened in 2014
In a report published on May 21, 2014, a Smart TV owner described this sequence: the set installed a software update, displayed revised documents, and accepted a general television-use document but rejected LG’s privacy policy. After that choice, the owner reported that network-connected functions stopped working. Contemporary coverage described the episode as a “smart” TV being functionally downgraded when its owner refused data-collection terms. The contemporaneous report is an account of one television and does not establish that every LG model behaved identically.

What data LG described collecting
The historical policy language discussed viewing behavior, searches and other usage information. LG’s LivePlus support document for supported 2012 and 2013 sets gave more specific examples:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Program name and episode number
- Viewing duration
- An anonymous device identifier
- Usage of LivePlus applications, which could also be collected by the application provider
The document said personally identifiable information was kept separately from viewing data. It also described typical retention of most data for up to one week, with some information retained longer for media research. Those are historical statements, not current retention guarantees. Could LG share viewing data with advertisers?
Yes, the 2014 materials allowed commercial sharing. The report described viewing, device and basic-usage information being shared with third parties for advertising, analytics and viewing-related information. LG’s LivePlus FAQ used narrower wording, saying anonymous viewing behavior and IP addresses could be shared for advertising and media research.
“Anonymous” does not automatically mean harmless. A persistent device identifier or IP address can help associate activity over time. At the same time, the documents do not prove that LG directly sold an individual’s name together with a complete viewing history. The accurate conclusion is that the historical terms permitted commercial use and sharing of viewing-related information while distinguishing that data from separately handled personally identifiable account information.
What “make the TV stupid” meant
The phrase was rhetorical. It did not mean the panel stopped displaying every source. The reported consequence was the loss of particular online functions.

| Function | What refusing smart-service terms may mean |
|---|---|
| HDMI input | Usually separate from LG’s online services and still usable, subject to the model. |
| Antenna or broadcast reception | Model- and region-dependent; not described as universally disabled by the 2014 report. |
| Built-in streaming apps | May be unavailable or limited without network access and required agreements. |
| LG Channels | Requires connected-service access. |
| App downloads and updates | Require network connectivity and relevant service agreements. |
| Voice, recommendations and personalization | May require additional permissions, accounts or separate agreements. |
| External streamer | Can run independently when the LG television is used as an offline display. |
“You must accept terms to use LG’s online services” is therefore not the same statement as “you must consent to every optional data use to watch HDMI or antenna video.”

What current LG televisions require
LG’s current support guidance says an internet-connected Smart TV needs an active connection and agreement to relevant User Agreements for LG content and services. On recent sets, the documented path is:
- Press Settings on the remote.
- Choose All Settings.
- Open Support.
- Choose Privacy & Terms.
- Open User Agreements and review the listed choices.
LG warns that labels and paths vary by release year and webOS version, so do not assume this exact route applies to a 2014 television. For 2021-and-later sets using webOS 6.0 or later, LG identifies the region setting under All Settings → General → System → Location → LG Services Country. A mismatched region can prevent agreements or services from loading. See LG’s support instructions.
LG also maintains a separate Smart TV privacy policy for Smart TV and LG Channels users at its Privacy Center; the general LG website privacy notice is not the complete Smart TV policy.

Turning off a viewing-recognition option reduces the collection category covered by that control; it does not prove that the operating system, apps, voice features, crash reporting, advertising systems or network diagnostics collect nothing.
What changed in 2026
On May 11, 2026, the Texas attorney general announced a settlement requiring LG to provide clearer disclosure and a simple opt-out for viewing-data collection in Texas. The announcement says LG agreed not to use ACR to collect viewing data without informed consent. This is a Texas-specific settlement announcement; it does not establish identical controls or obligations for every U.S. state, country or LG model. Read the Texas attorney general’s announcement.

Use LG’s platform for convenience
Accept the agreements required for the built-in apps, LG Channels and recommendations, then review optional advertising, viewing-information and voice settings individually. This gives the most integrated experience but leaves you subject to LG’s service and privacy changes, plus each app’s own policy.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Keep essential services, decline optional collection
Where the interface separates choices, accept only the agreements needed for the services you actually use and disable viewing recognition, ad personalization or voice features you do not want. LG may bundle terms, and disabling one purpose does not disable every telemetry category.

Keep the LG set offline
Connect an Apple TV 4K (official page), Roku player (official page), Fire TV device (official page) or Google TV Streamer (Google Store) and leave the television’s network disconnected. This limits what the LG platform itself can report and lets the panel remain useful, but the external device and its apps become the relevant data collectors.
Use network filtering if you can maintain it
Pi-hole (official site) and NextDNS (official site) can block known tracking domains. DNS filtering cannot inspect all encrypted traffic, stop every first-party request or replace the television’s own privacy controls.
If apps disappeared after a policy change
- Confirm that the television still has internet access.
- Check the country or region setting.
- Reopen Privacy & Terms → User Agreements and see whether a required service agreement is unchecked.
- Consider whether a webOS update changed the available services.
- Check whether the app itself has ended support or whether an imported set is being used outside its original market.
Do not assume that accepting a general-use document while rejecting a privacy document produces the same result on every model. The 2014 report documents one owner’s experience, not a universal enforcement rule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe accurate verdict
The original “stupid TV” complaint was a genuine 2014 privacy and platform-lock-in story. The lasting lesson is narrower than the headline: LG could condition network features on agreement to its terms, and historical LivePlus policies allowed viewing-related data to be used and shared for advertising or media research. Current televisions have newer agreements and controls, while the exact consequences depend on model, software, region and service. You can often keep an LG panel useful without accepting every optional data use—by choosing separate settings, using an external streamer or leaving the TV offline—but no connected platform is automatically tracking-free.
