Google Messages began a wider, staged rollout of RCS registration for two phone numbers on dual-SIM Android phones in January 2025. The feature lets both an active physical SIM and eSIM—or two physical SIMs on supported phones—show separate RCS status in Messages. It is not a separate service or subscription, and it is not guaranteed for every phone, carrier, region or account because activation is controlled partly on Google’s servers.
What dual-SIM RCS actually means
A dual-SIM phone has two mobile identities. Android has long handled SMS and MMS on both lines, while Google Messages historically limited RCS registration to one number, usually the default or preferred SIM. The newer behavior can register both numbers with Google’s RCS service at the same time. Contemporary reports describe both numbers appearing under Messages settings → RCS chats, each with its own status and enable/disable control (9to5Google).

This is different from choosing which SIM sends a particular message. Registering both numbers does not necessarily make every conversation switchable at will; the selected conversation, Android’s defaults and the app build can still determine the sending line.

Why it matters
- Keep a personal and work number RCS-enabled without disabling either line.
- Use a local travel SIM alongside a home-country eSIM.
- Maintain separate voice, data and messaging identities.
- Avoid repeatedly changing the preferred SIM just to regain chat features.
Google’s earlier documentation indicated that RCS was available for the default or preferred call SIM and that additional SIM support could arrive later (9to5Google).

What the rollout looked like
This was a staged, server-side rollout rather than an Android-version feature released to everyone on one day. Installing a particular Messages build could expose the interface, but Google’s server still had to enable the account and number.

Android Authority reported sightings in the United States, Canada and other regions, but Google did not publish a complete device, carrier or country timetable (Android Authority). As of August 16, 2026, Google’s public help pages document RCS generally, not a universal dual-SIM compatibility matrix.
Which phones and SIM combinations may qualify?
Reports covered two physical SIMs and physical-SIM-plus-eSIM configurations, with examples involving Google Fi, T-Mobile, Verizon, several manufacturers including Samsung, and users outside the United States (9to5Google). These are sightings, not an official supported-device list.

Your outcome depends on all of the following:
- The handset must support two active lines and its manufacturer’s SIM management.
- Each carrier must permit RCS registration for that number.
- Both SIMs must be enabled and able to complete number verification.
- Your Messages account must have received Google’s server-side feature flag.
- Region, roaming state, data settings and device software can affect setup.
The feature is therefore not inherently an Android 15 or Android 16 capability. Reporting ties it to Google Messages builds and server activation, although hardware and carrier support remain necessary.
How to check both numbers
- Open Google Messages.
- Tap your profile picture or initial in the top-right.
- Choose Messages settings.
- Open RCS chats. Some releases call this Chat features.
- Look for both phone numbers or SIM entries.
- Check each status. Connected means RCS is available for that number, according to Google’s support guidance (Google Help).
- If a number is listed but disabled, turn on its checkbox or toggle and complete verification.
Seeing only one number does not prove that the phone is incompatible; the second line may not yet be eligible for the server-side rollout.
If only one SIM appears or will not connect
Start with the local checks
- Update Google Messages in Google Play. If you already use the beta, install its latest update, but beta enrollment is neither required nor a guarantee.
- Confirm both SIMs are enabled in Android’s SIM settings.
- Check separate defaults for calls, SMS and mobile data. Menu names vary by manufacturer.
- Restart the phone, then force-close and reopen Messages.
- Make sure each number can receive the verification text or call.
Interpret the status
- Connecting: the number is being verified. Leave it enabled and wait.
- Trouble connecting. Awaiting retry: verification failed or could not complete. Google advises submitting feedback from the RCS settings screen if this remains for more than 30 minutes (Google Help).
- RCS disabled by carrier: contact that carrier; an app update cannot override the restriction.
A restart can refresh Messages after Google has enabled the feature, and some users reported success after force-closing the app. Neither action can force a server-side rollout (Android Authority).

Check the call-SIM and data-SIM relationship
Dual-SIM Android phones can use separate defaults for calls, SMS and mobile data. Google’s RCS FAQ says that, when setup is not automatic with both SIMs inserted, users should check that the Call SIM is configured as the Data SIM (Google RCS FAQ). Treat this as a troubleshooting condition, not a permanent requirement for every handset.
Open your phone’s SIM manager—often under Settings → Network & internet → SIMs, though Samsung and other manufacturers use different labels—and verify the intended line has mobile data. RCS messages can travel over Wi-Fi or mobile data, but verification and carrier configuration may still fail when a line is data-disabled or roaming.

Dual-SIM registration does not remove SMS/MMS fallback. Google Messages indicates in the compose area whether a message will use Wi-Fi/mobile data, SMS or MMS. A recipient without RCS, a carrier restriction, a disconnected line or a temporary network problem can still trigger fallback.

Messages lets you choose how failed RCS messages are resent. Be cautious with SMS with a link: Google warns that attached media may be exposed through a public link that Google does not control (Google Help).
Limits that the rollout does not settle
The evidence supports simultaneous registration of two numbers, not identical behavior for every RCS feature. Public Google documentation does not specify all dual-SIM interactions involving group-chat membership, roaming, a data-disabled line, moving a number to a new phone, conversation identity, read receipts, typing indicators or media delivery. A conversation may remain associated with the number that started it, and line selection can vary by device and app build.

Why the feature may appear and disappear
The 2024 sightings, withdrawal and later returns show why reports can conflict. A beta build may receive a server flag before a stable build, and Google can change eligibility without a user changing hardware. If dual-SIM controls vanish after appearing, that pattern alone does not indicate a defective phone. There is no published manual switch that guarantees activation.
Bottom line for dual-line Android users
Google Messages’ January 2025 expansion made two-number RCS practical for more dual-SIM users, including physical-SIM-plus-eSIM setups. Check Messages settings → RCS chats for two entries and a Connected status, then verify SIM defaults and number verification if the second line is missing. If the controls never appear—or one carrier rejects registration—the remaining limitation is likely Google’s staged eligibility, carrier support, device software or verification rather than a missing paid upgrade.
