Ubuntu CMS and ITSM Installation: Identify the Right Software First

CMS and ITSM are not a single Ubuntu software stack. This guide distinguishes the programming-contest CMS project from Pandora ITSM and outlines each product’s documented Ubuntu installation path.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“CMS” and “ITSM” do not identify a unique pair of products, so there is no single installation procedure for both on Ubuntu. The CMS project documented here is a programming-contest management system; the ITSM product is Pandora ITSM. Their operating systems, databases, and installation methods differ. Confirm that these are the products you mean before following product-specific steps.

This guide covers how to install CMS on Ubuntu Linux using the CMS project’s Ubuntu 24.04 guidance, and how to install ITSM on Ubuntu Linux using Pandora’s detailed Ubuntu Server 22.04 procedure. The versions matter: the two guides target different Ubuntu releases.

First, identify which CMS and ITSM you mean

CMS can mean many content-management systems. The current CMS project guide covered here is for a programming contest system: it manages contests and submissions, while isolated worker machines evaluate contestants’ programs. Pandora ITSM is a separate service-management application. It is not the ITSM component of CMS, and the two products are not interchangeable.

If you meant a website platform or a different IT service-management product, do not use the product-specific instructions below. Find that product’s installation documentation and confirm its supported Ubuntu release first.

How to install CMS on Ubuntu Linux

Check the host requirements

The CMS project says it runs on Linux and that its developers test it on Debian and Ubuntu. Its current installation guide calls for PostgreSQL 9.4 or later, GCC, Python 3.11 or later, Isolate 2.0 or later, and a Linux kernel with cgroupv2 support. The Ubuntu 24.04 dependency set includes Python 3.12 and its development, virtual-environment, and pip packages, PostgreSQL, build tools, PostgreSQL and YAML libraries, shared MIME data, reference documentation, zip, curl, OpenJDK 11 headless, and Free Pascal. Isolate is installed separately from its upstream project. Use the official CMS installation guide for the exact package command and Isolate installation steps; they are not reproduced here.

Compiler runtimes are needed only for languages the contest accepts. Decide which languages contestants may submit before installing optional language toolchains; adding every possible runtime is not a substitute for a deliberate contest configuration.

Install under a dedicated account

  1. Create a dedicated system account, commonly named cmsuser. If you install Isolate as a package that supplies an isolate group, add the account to that group.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Obtain a CMS release archive or the project repository source, and keep the source directory separate from the eventual installation directory.

  3. As the dedicated account, run ./install.py --dir=<install_dir> cms from the source directory, replacing <install_dir> with the path you selected. The installer creates a Python virtual environment, installs CMS and its Python dependencies, checks Isolate, and copies sample configuration files. It also creates data, log, and cache directories.

Configure PostgreSQL and CMS

Create a PostgreSQL role and database owned by that role. Grant the schema and large-object privileges CMS requires, then set the database connection credentials in cms.toml and initialize the database with cmsInitDB. The exact values depend on your database and host layout; do not assume sample credentials are appropriate for a live installation.

For a database on another machine, configure PostgreSQL’s listening addresses and host-based access controls deliberately. Permit connections only from the required CMS hosts rather than broadly exposing the database service.

How to install ITSM on Ubuntu Linux

Confirm Pandora ITSM and its target release

The detailed Pandora ITSM installation procedure covered here targets Ubuntu Server 22.04. Pandora’s general requirements list MySQL 8 or later and PHP 8 or later. The detailed Ubuntu procedure uses Apache, PHP-FPM, PHP 8.1, PHP extensions, web-console dependencies, and Percona Server. Pandora requires MySQL or Percona; it is a web application, accessed through a modern HTML5 browser.

Do not treat this as an Ubuntu 24.04 installation recipe: the cited detailed procedure specifies Ubuntu Server 22.04. Check Pandora’s current documentation for a procedure matching the Ubuntu release you intend to deploy.

Check the documented resources

Pandora’s general product requirements give a minimum of a 2.4 GHz dual-core CPU, 1 GB RAM, and 10 GB disk, with 4 GB RAM and 20 GB disk recommended. Separately, the detailed Ubuntu 22.04 procedure lists root rights, an internet connection, 2 GB RAM, and 10 GB free disk as prerequisites. These are different figures for different scopes in the documentation; use the detailed procedure’s prerequisites when planning to follow that procedure, and size a production system for its expected workload.

Follow the vendor procedure without weakening host protections by default

The detailed guide installs and configures Apache and PHP-FPM, installs Percona Server, creates a database and application user, and configures the web console and supporting services. Follow Pandora’s current Ubuntu 22.04 manual for its exact package commands, configuration values, and application setup; the available procedure summary does not establish those commands or settings.

The manual includes a section titled “Disable AppArmor and UFW.” Disabling mandatory access controls or the host firewall can reduce security, so do not treat that step as routine advice. Before changing either control, verify Pandora’s current rationale and supported configuration for your version, preserve the protections where possible, and configure narrowly scoped exceptions for required services rather than leaving protections disabled.

Pandora also documents an automated Ubuntu deployment script run as root. Its defaults include database credentials. If you choose that route, inspect the current official script and set unique credentials rather than deploying defaults. Root execution makes reviewing what the script changes especially important.
