For a single server and a command-line, git push workflow, start with Dokku. Choose CapRover if you want a web interface for deploying Docker apps and can meet its public-IP and DNS requirements. Consider Coolify if you want a dashboard to coordinate Docker resources on servers you supply and operate. Ownkube is a different kind of option: its vendor describes a commercial hosted service and an AWS-account path where it operates the platform.

These products are not interchangeable, and self-hosting does not eliminate infrastructure work. The right choice depends on who will maintain the servers, data, backups, and security—not just how an app gets deployed.

How do Coolify, Dokku, CapRover, and Ownkube differ?

Product Operating model Deployment path What you operate
Coolify Self-hostable control plane for Docker resources on one or more servers you connect Git repository, Dockerfile, Docker Compose, or prebuilt Docker image Your servers and workloads; if self-hosting Coolify, its control plane too
Dokku Open-source PaaS documented for a single server git push, using a Dockerfile or buildpacks The server, deployed apps, and their data
CapRover Self-hosted Docker-based PaaS with a web interface and CLI deployment path Deploy apps through its interface or CLI The server, Docker setup, and deployed apps
Ownkube Commercial vendor-operated hosted service, with a vendor-described AWS-account option Vendor says it accepts a Git repository or an existing container image For hosted use, the vendor says it operates compute and the platform; confirm responsibilities for the AWS option with the vendor

The descriptions of Coolify, Dokku, and CapRover above come from their respective official documentation. Ownkube’s operating and deployment descriptions are its own product claims, not independent assessments.

Which is better: Coolify or Dokku?

Choose Dokku for a compact, CLI-first workflow

Dokku’s official getting-started documentation describes a single-server platform: push application code, let Dokku build it with a Dockerfile or detected buildpack, and run it in containers. Its documentation also covers routing web processes and managing background processes and scheduled tasks. That makes it a natural fit when a developer is comfortable working from the command line and wants a straightforward path from a Git push to an app on one host.

Choose Coolify for a dashboard across connected Docker servers

Coolify’s documentation calls it a control plane for infrastructure: it connects to servers over SSH and coordinates builds, deployments, domains, HTTPS, health checks, and routine operations. You can manage resources on one or more connected servers, using Git, Dockerfiles, Compose files, or existing images. That wider dashboard view may suit a small team that prefers managing varied Docker-based workloads through an interface rather than centering its workflow on a Git push to one host.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Multiple connected servers do not, by themselves, mean that Coolify provides cluster scheduling or high availability. Confirm the specific scheduling and failure behavior you need in the current documentation before relying on either.

Is CapRover easier than Dokku?

They emphasize different workflows, so “easier” depends on whether you prefer a web-facing setup or a CLI-centered one. CapRover supplies a web interface and a CLI route for deploying apps; its documentation describes a Docker-based installation and setup involving a public IP and wildcard DNS. Dokku’s documented core flow is a Git push to a single server. A reader who prefers a dashboard may find CapRover’s approach more approachable, while a CLI-oriented developer may prefer Dokku. Neither choice removes the need to understand the host, networking, and application requirements.

CapRover’s documentation says its CLI deployment sends the current Git commit, excluding uncommitted and ignored files. Check what is included in a deployment before assuming local working-tree changes will reach the server.

Can you deploy apps on your own VPS, and what does each require?

Coolify, Dokku, and CapRover require infrastructure you provide in the documentation reviewed. The operating system, architecture, memory, and network conditions differ; the figures below are documented baselines or recommendations, not capacity plans for a particular workload.

Product Documented host and memory details Network or platform details
Coolify Uses Docker servers you connect; the opened official documentation does not state a universal minimum RAM figure. Connects to servers over SSH. You provide and pay for the servers.
Dokku Official documentation lists Ubuntu 22.04, 24.04, or 26.04, or Debian 11 or later; x64, AMD64, and ARM64 are listed. It gives 1 GB of memory for the Docker scheduler or 2 GB on every node for the K3s scheduler. Documented as running on a single server. A domain is recommended but not mandatory.
CapRover Official documentation lists AMD64 and ARM64 images, says its tested stack is Ubuntu 24.04 with Docker 25 or later, and recommends 1 GB RAM as a practical minimum. It warns that 512 MB may be insufficient during image builds. Standard installation requires a public IP. Its example command uses ports 80, 443, and 3000; check firewall rules and the current install instructions for your setup.
Ownkube Its vendor comparison describes both a hosted path and an AWS-account option; a universal host-memory requirement is not established here. Verify current cloud, account, and plan requirements directly with the vendor.

Dokku’s figures are scheduler-specific minimums; CapRover’s 1 GB figure is a practical minimum recommendation. Neither should be read as a promise that a real application will perform well at that size. Builds can need temporary memory, and databases, concurrent jobs, storage, and backup processes all add demand. Size the server for the workloads you intend to run, including build peaks.

How do deployment, domains, and HTTPS work?

Deployment choices

  • Coolify: The official documentation supports deploying from a Git repository, Dockerfile, Docker Compose file, or prebuilt image. Its control plane coordinates deployment to connected servers.
  • Dokku: The official getting-started guide documents a Git-push workflow, building from a Dockerfile or buildpack and running containers.
  • CapRover: Its documented path begins with Docker installation and supports deployment through its interface or CLI. Follow the current setup documentation for the exact installation process.
  • Ownkube: The vendor says its service deploys from a repository or an existing container image. Treat this as a description of the product offer, not independent evidence of reliability or performance.

DNS and certificates

Coolify coordinates domains and HTTPS, but its documentation assigns DNS and infrastructure responsibilities to the server owner. Dokku recommends using a domain and documents DNS and domain configuration; a domain is not mandatory. CapRover’s normal domain setup uses wildcard DNS, and its documentation says HTTPS is unavailable when used without a domain. Ownkube says it provides a Cloudflare subdomain and manages TLS; confirm the current details and what happens if you use your own domain with the vendor.

Who handles updates, backups, security, and failures?

With Coolify, Dokku, or CapRover on your own host, someone on your team must operate the host and the applications. A self-hosted deployment is not an operated service simply because its software has a dashboard or installer.

  • Coolify: Its documentation assigns the owner responsibility for server choice and cost, operating-system updates, SSH access, firewall rules, DNS, application and database data, backup and restore strategy, and workload security. Self-hosters also maintain Coolify itself, including its updates, backups, and recovery. Coolify’s documentation says existing resources keep running if its control plane is unavailable, but dashboard control and automation are interrupted until it returns.
  • Dokku and CapRover: Their self-hosted operating model means you provide and operate the host and deployed services. Plan explicitly for patching, access control, network security, monitoring, and recovery rather than assuming the PaaS handles those responsibilities for you.
  • Ownkube: The vendor describes its hosted compute and platform as operated by Ownkube, and also offers a path into a customer AWS account. Clarify the division of responsibility for the AWS option, including who patches, backs up, monitors, and restores each component.

Before putting production data on any of these options, verify access controls and security boundaries, monitor the workloads, document upgrades and rollback, and test a restore from backup. A backup that has never been restored is not proof that recovery will work.

How should you compare ongoing cost?

Do not compare a software license with a hosted-service price and call that the total cost. For a self-operated installation, account for compute, storage, network transfer, backups, domains and DNS, monitoring, database capacity, and the time required for patching and incident response. A free or open-source license does not remove infrastructure bills or operator work.

Ownkube’s May 8, 2026 comparison includes its own pricing and cost estimates. Those are vendor figures, not independent market research, and may change with plan terms, workload, or cloud requirements. Check current pricing and state your workload assumptions before comparing it with self-managed infrastructure; no durable like-for-like total cost is established here.

Which platform should you choose?

  • Pick Dokku if you want a CLI-oriented Git-push workflow centered on one server and are prepared to operate that server.
  • Pick CapRover if you want a web-facing path around Docker and can satisfy its public-IP and wildcard-DNS setup requirements.
  • Pick Coolify if you want a dashboard to coordinate Docker resources across servers you provide, while retaining responsibility for the hosts and, in a self-hosted setup, the control plane.
  • Evaluate Ownkube if you prefer a vendor-operated commercial service or its vendor-described AWS-account option; assess its current terms and responsibility boundaries directly with the company.

There is no independent comparative performance benchmark established here, so do not infer production suitability from a product label, quick installation, or feature list. Test the deployment and recovery procedures against your own application before choosing.
