A two-way splitter takes one signal input and distributes it to two outputs. For a home cable connection, that can let one wall outlet feed a TV box and an internet modem—but a splitter is not an amplifier, and the signal level at each output is lower. The right device depends on the signal type: a residential coax splitter, satellite splitter, microwave RF splitter and fiber-optic splitter are not interchangeable.
What does a two-way splitter do?
A two-way splitter divides a signal arriving at one input across two output ports. ANSI/SCTE 153 describes this class of broadband RF device as dividing an input among outputs at a fixed ratio that is nominally independent of frequency within the device’s specified bandwidth. The standard covers premises equipment connected to broadband hybrid fiber-coaxial (HFC) networks, including two-way splitters. ANSI/SCTE 153 (2021)

Splitting is not signal boosting. The division and the component itself introduce loss, so the output signal is weaker than the input. The amount depends on the splitter’s design and the frequency in use; check the product specification for the relevant band rather than assuming every two-way splitter has the same loss.

Can one cable outlet connect a TV box and modem?
Often, a standard cable splitter is used to connect more than one device to a single cable outlet—for example, a TV box and internet modem. Xfinity describes this as a typical use of a cable splitter. Xfinity’s cable-splitter guidance
#1 Best Overall
- MULTI-PURPOSE – This coax splitter is designed for use with amplifiers, amplified antennas, HDTVs and more
- FREQUENCY RANGE – Distributes a digital signal in the 5-2500 MHz Frequency Range
- CORROSION RESISTANT – The gold plated RG6 connectors allows for optimal connectivity

Residential coax, CATV and HFC
These splitters distribute electrical radio-frequency signals over coaxial cable to devices or outlets. Primex describes products for DOCSIS 3.1 and MoCA 2.5 and lists a 1675 MHz bandwidth for its product family; those capabilities apply to the listed Primex products, not to coax splitters generally. Satellite systems may need a splitter that lets DC power travel from a receiver toward the low-noise block downconverter (LNB). The direction and isolation of that power path matter; an ordinary coax splitter may not provide the required routing. TechniSat lists a diode-decoupled, DC power-pass two-way model, while TRIAX describes indoor 5 MHz–2.4 GHz splitters for satellite IF and MATV with diode-coupled DC/AC pass from the outputs toward the input. - Amphenol MoCA 2-way splitter is a high-quality splitter designed specifically for multimedia over coax alliance networks. It supports the latest MoCA 2.5 technology, which provides faster data rates and enhanced network performance compared to older versions.
- It allows you to split your MoCA signal into separate paths, enabling you to connect multiple devices or extend your network coverage at 5 - 1675 MHz performance.
- This splitter features excellent isolation and low insertion loss, ensuring optimal signal transmission and minimal interference between connected devices.
- Features excellent isolation and low insertion loss with a 6kV ring wave surge withstand, ensuring optimal signal transmission and minimal interference between connected devices. It also features 15 PSI pressure-sealed coaxial F-Ports.
- The splitter is easy to install and compatible with all MoCA-enabled devices, making it an ideal choice for home or office networks requiring efficient and reliable signal distribution.
Microwave RF power splitters
Microwave components have frequency, impedance, connector and power-handling requirements that differ from household coax hardware. For example, Norsat lists a two-way K-band unit for 17.7–21.2 GHz, 50 ohms, with 2.92 mm female connectors. It is an example of a different class of device, not a substitute for a home cable splitter. Norsat product specifications
Fiber-optic splitters
Fiber splitters divide optical power among output fibers in systems such as FTTx/PON and HFC. They work with optical signals and fiber connections, not electrical coax signals, so a coax splitter cannot replace one. Türksat splitter document

What to check before buying or installing one
- Signal type and application: Match the splitter to residential coax/CATV, satellite IF, microwave RF or fiber. These are distinct devices.
- Frequency range: Confirm that the range covers the signal band used by your system. Performance and loss can vary across that range.
- Impedance: Match the system’s impedance. The cited TechniSat satellite model is 75 ohms; the cited Norsat microwave model is 50 ohms.
- Connectors: Check the connector type and gender at every port against your cables and equipment. TechniSat lists F-female connectors; Norsat lists 2.92 mm female connectors.
- Transmission or insertion loss: Splitting reduces signal level. Compare the stated loss at the frequencies you use and consider the rest of the signal path.
- Port isolation or decoupling: Isolation affects how much connected outputs interact and can be important in satellite configurations.
- DC power pass and direction: If equipment such as an LNB needs power through the coax, verify which ports pass it, in which direction, and whether the outputs are diode-isolated.
- Installation environment: Confirm indoor or outdoor suitability, shielding and mounting requirements, and any provider-specific instructions.

When to ask your provider or system installer
Ask for guidance if you are unsure which splitter matches your service, if a modem or TV service becomes unreliable after adding one, or if a satellite installation’s DC power path is unclear. A splitter can distribute a compatible signal, but it cannot correct insufficient signal level, incompatible connectors or an incorrectly routed power feed.
