They are evidence-backed candidates, not a definitive ranking or a confirmed identification of the two trends the original headline intended. The evidence is also uneven: Hexagon Robotics describes an active factory program and a future deployment target, while the storage outlook rests chiefly on industry leaders’ views and battery developers’ claims.
1. Industrial humanoids are moving from demonstrations into factory programs
Hexagon Robotics says its AEON humanoid is performing production tasks at BMW Group’s Leipzig plant as part of a multistage program. That is a named industrial setting, but the status comes from the robot’s developer; the announcement is not an independent audit of day-to-day performance.

What AEON is designed to do
Hexagon describes AEON as a human-scale, multipurpose robot designed to work in existing industrial spaces rather than require factories to be rebuilt around it. The company says it combines wheel-based mobility, modular end effectors and sensing for tasks such as machine tending, material handling, inspection and reality capture. Hexagon also says the robot can autonomously swap its battery in under 25 seconds. These are company descriptions of the platform, not independently demonstrated productivity or reliability results. What is happening now—and what is still a target
The BMW work is described as underway. By contrast, Hexagon says it and Schaeffler are working toward deploying at least 1,000 AEON robots across Schaeffler’s global manufacturing network by 2032. That is a future target, not a completed fleet. Neither announcement establishes realized productivity, reliability, payback or whether results at one plant will carry over to other factories.

For manufacturers, the practical test is not whether a robot can complete a task once, but whether it can do useful work safely and consistently in real operations. Relevant evidence would include uptime and task quality, integration time and cost, maintenance needs, capital costs and effects on workers. The available Hexagon announcement does not provide independent, comparable measures on those points.
2. Grid-scale storage is a plausible next step, but its pace remains a forecast
At the World Economic Forum’s Summer Davos gathering, ReNew Chair and CEO Sumant Sinha described pressure on electricity networks: “Grids are really struggling right now.” He forecast that storage development would move faster than many expect: “It’s going to happen much faster than people expect.” Those are an energy-sector leader’s views, not a measured growth rate or independently verified market forecast. The World Economic Forum’s June 25, 2026 article reports perspectives from innovators asked what could become possible in their fields over the next 18 months.

Battery chemistries are pursuing different advantages
The WEF article presents lithium-metal and sodium-ion batteries as distinct approaches, not as a settled contest with one winner. It says Pure Lithium’s process eliminates graphite and reports the company’s claim that its lithium-metal batteries weigh half as much and offer twice the capacity of lithium-ion batteries. Those figures are company claims reported in an interview article, not independently tested specifications or proof of mass-market readiness.
The article describes sodium-ion developer HiNa as emphasizing stable operation at −40°C, a potential advantage for grid storage or fleets in cold climates. That description should not be generalized to every sodium-ion product or treated as evidence of mature, widespread availability.

What would show that storage is scaling
Forecasts about faster deployment are best tested against operating projects and product-level evidence. Useful comparisons include:
- Project status: whether a system is a pilot, contracted construction or operating at grid scale.
- Delivered energy and duration: how much electricity a system can supply and for how long.
- Economics and lifetime: cost per delivered unit of energy, cycle life and maintenance requirements.
- Safety and supply: operating safety and constraints in materials or supply chains.
- Conditions of use: charging and response behavior, including performance in cold weather where relevant.
The WEF article offers interview testimony and chemistry-related claims, but not comparable project or product data across these measures. It therefore supports treating grid storage as a significant development to watch—not declaring which chemistry will win or how quickly it will scale.

How strong is the case for these two developments?
The robotics example has a company-reported deployment at a named factory and a distinct long-term target at another manufacturer. The storage example has a clear grid-pressure rationale and predictions from industry participants, alongside battery developers’ claims about their approaches. Neither case, on the evidence cited here, establishes independent comparative economics or a definitive ranking of what will matter most in 2026.
