Two data-center buildings proposed near Jayton in West Texas would cover about 1.52 million square feet and carry a reported combined estimated cost of $4.8 billion. The often-cited figure of roughly $12 billion is not the price of the Jayton campus alone: it combines planned investment in Jayton and a separate development in Childress.

What is planned for Jayton?

Reports describe two proposed data-center buildings along Country Road 233 and P2390 in Jayton, Kent County, Texas. No specific street address has been reported. Texas Construction Hub says the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) registrations for the buildings were dated October 1, 2026; its October 5 report provides the more precise area and cost figures. Why do reports mention $12 billion?

The approximately $12 billion figure refers to planned investment across the Jayton development and the separate Childress Project Hyper development, according to TechRadar’s October 7, 2026 report. It is not an estimate for the two Jayton buildings by themselves, and the cited reporting does not establish it as an independently verified statewide or regional AI-investment total.

Who is behind the project, and what is not yet known?

TechRadar associates the Jayton facilities with Crusoe. Texas Construction Hub’s account of the TDLR registrations, however, says the filings identify owner entities and do not name Crusoe as developer. The relationship should therefore be understood as reported, rather than as a developer named in the filings.

  • Customer or tenant: The reports do not identify one; Texas Construction Hub says no tenant is assigned.
  • Power supply: The available reporting does not establish the campus’s power capacity, source, or arrangements.
  • Connection to Childress: The sites are described as connected developments, but the reports do not say whether they will share power infrastructure.

How does Texas’s data-center permitting context affect the story?

On September 21, 2026, the Office of the Texas Governor said Governor Greg Abbott directed the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) to halt data-center permit issuance until the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) completes an audit. The release also states: “Because the Public Utility Commission of Texas (PUCT), ERCOT, and the Texas Water Development Board (TWDB) require that information to make informed decisions, no state agency shall move forward with regulatory approvals related to data center development until it is acquired.” Office of the Texas Governor

That is statewide policy context, not a reported Jayton-specific permit decision. The prospective dates in the project reports do not resolve how the directive will affect this campus.
