OpenCode gives developers a way to keep a familiar coding-agent workflow while choosing among different AI providers and models. Its official documentation lists 75+ LLM providers and local models, but switching to OpenCode does not erase the limits, costs, or access rules set by those services. The claim that changing agents solved Claude Code or Codex rate-limit interruptions is the original author’s experience, not an independently verified result.
What OpenCode changes—and what it does not
OpenCode is an open-source AI coding agent available as a terminal interface, desktop app, and IDE extension. Its documented workflows include setting up a project, planning and building, editing code, and undoing or redoing changes. The interface is the agent; the model and its access usually come from a provider you configure.
That separation is the practical appeal: you can change the service or model without necessarily changing your coding-agent interface. It is not the same as a promise that OpenCode will seamlessly move a session elsewhere when a provider throttles you. You may need another provider configured, valid credentials, and a model suitable for the task.
What “75+ providers” means in practice
OpenCode’s provider documentation says it supports 75+ LLM providers and local models through integrations using AI SDK and Models.dev. The directory includes Anthropic, OpenAI, OpenRouter, Amazon Bedrock, Google Vertex AI, GitHub Copilot, Ollama, LM Studio, and OpenCode Zen.

That breadth is a menu of integrations, not automatic access to every model. You generally need to connect an account or configure a local model, and providers can differ in model availability, account entitlements, pricing, speed, and usage limits. An integration listing does not establish that every provider offers the same features or terms.
Connecting a provider
The documented setup uses the /connect command to add a provider API key, then configure that provider. OpenCode stores credentials in a local auth file. Check the provider’s own instructions and account settings for what access the key grants and what usage is billed or limited.

OpenCode Zen is optional, not a free bypass
OpenCode Zen is an optional service offering models provided by the OpenCode team and tested to work with OpenCode. Its documented sign-in flow asks users to add billing details. It should be evaluated like another service, not treated as an unlimited or free workaround for a provider cap.
Does switching solve Claude Code or Codex rate limits?
Not by itself. The original title’s author describes switching after usage caps interrupted work, but that report is not an independent test of OpenCode or a guarantee for other accounts. The underlying Claude Code and ChatGPT/Codex quota details may vary by plan and can change; the available evidence does not establish a current quota table. Check the relevant official plan documentation for your account before relying on a specific cap.

If you select a different provider or model, you are subject to that service’s access rules and limits instead. OpenCode’s documentation supports configuring multiple providers, but does not promise automatic failover when a request hits a limit. A second provider only helps if it is already available to you, configured, and usable for the work at hand.

- Setup and credentials: Identify which provider accounts or API keys you need, and whether your organization permits their use.
- Model availability: Confirm the model you want is accessible to your account and works with the coding tasks you need.
- Cost and limits: Review the selected service’s billing, rate limits, and plan entitlements; they are not replaced by OpenCode.
- Latency and workflow fit: Different models and services can respond differently. No comparative performance ranking is established here, so assess against your own tasks.
- Local execution: If you want to use a local model, check the requirements and configuration for the local runtime, such as Ollama or LM Studio.
- Interface preference: Choose among OpenCode’s terminal, desktop, or IDE options based on how you work.
OpenCode is available as software through an install script or package managers, and its repository links an MIT license. See the official introduction and project repository for installation options and current project details. Provider counts and integrations can change; the official introduction footer reports an October 6, 2026 update.
