You can start streaming on Twitch without buying a studio setup. Twitch’s stated minimum is a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video—such as a console, phone, or computer running streaming software. A powerful PC, microphone, and camera are not required. Start with equipment you already own, test a stream, then buy only to fix a problem or support a format you want.
What you need to start a Twitch stream
Twitch describes streaming as sending audio and video through an encoder over the public internet. The encoder can be software or a physical device, and your broadcasting route might be a computer, phone, or console. Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ puts the minimum plainly: “All you need to start streaming is a stable internet connection and a tool that can broadcast video to the internet, also known as a video encoder.”

That means you do not need to buy a gaming PC, a second monitor, a capture card, a mixer, or a stream deck just because you are starting. If your existing device can run a supported broadcast method and your connection is stable, try that first.

Choose the device you already have
- Console: Check the console’s own streaming options for a direct route to broadcast. A capture card is not automatically necessary; it depends on the workflow you choose.
- Phone: Twitch identifies mobile as a possible broadcast route. It can be a practical way to try streaming without building a computer setup.
- Computer: Streaming software encodes the broadcast. Twitch lists multiple applications, including free options, and directs streamers to the Creator Dashboard for its current supported-software list.
Pick a workflow before buying accessories
The right setup depends on what you want to stream and how much control you need. A direct console or mobile route may be simpler; computer software may offer a different, more configurable workflow. Use the device and setup that let you go live reliably rather than assuming the most elaborate path is best.

Twitch’s software options and licensing details are listed on its broadcasting software page. Because supported applications can change, check the Creator Dashboard’s current list before choosing software. For a first stream, prioritize an option that works with your device and is straightforward for you to operate.
What optional equipment is worth buying?
Buy an accessory when you can name the limitation it solves. Twitch explicitly says a microphone and camera are not prerequisites: “No, you don’t need a mic or camera to stream.” You can stream gameplay without appearing on camera, and you can wait to upgrade audio until you know what your current mic sounds like.

Keep stream settings within your system and connection
Equipment alone does not determine stream quality. Twitch says suitable encoding, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate depend on the game, internet speed, and computer hardware. Higher resolutions such as 1080p require more bitrate, while higher frame rates increase encoding demands. If your settings lead to dropped frames or connection trouble, lower them rather than chasing maximum quality.

Twitch recommends constant bitrate (CBR) whenever possible in its broadcasting guidelines. Treat a stable stream as the priority: test with the game or activity you actually plan to broadcast, and adjust settings if the computer or connection cannot sustain them reliably.

If the stream repeatedly becomes unstable over Wi-Fi, connecting the streaming device to the router with Ethernet is a reasonable troubleshooting step, provided the device supports it and the router is within reach. It is not a universal purchase requirement.

Twitch’s article with specific Ethernet and upload-speed examples is a 2020 sports-streaming guide, not a current universal threshold for every creator. Its figures should not be treated as a guarantee that a particular upload speed will produce a good stream. Use Twitch’s live broadcast guidance and your own stream tests to judge the connection.

A practical first-stream checklist
- Choose your route: Use a console, phone, or computer you already own, based on how you want to stream.
- Check the current software or broadcast option: For computer streaming, verify that the application is on Twitch’s current supported list in the Creator Dashboard.
- Go live with modest settings: Pick settings your device and connection can handle consistently; do not assume 1080p or a high frame rate is necessary.
- Review what actually needs improvement: Listen for unclear voice, check whether a chosen camera view is dim, and notice whether the connection or computer struggles.
- Buy only for the observed bottleneck: Consider a USB mic for voice, a webcam and light for an on-camera format, or Ethernet for troublesome Wi-Fi. Skip gear that does not address a real need.
