Twitch bitrate settings: official examples
Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines give the following configurations. The page’s publication year is not stated in the reviewed material, so treat the values as Twitch’s published examples rather than dated guarantees of current ingest behavior.

CBR means constant bitrate: the encoder aims to send video data at a steady rate. A two-second keyframe interval is Twitch’s example setting. Together, these are a baseline to test, not substitutes for checking whether your connection and computer can sustain the output.

How to choose between 1080p and 720p
Choose 1080p when the connection and encoder can sustain it
Higher resolution needs more bitrate, and a higher frame rate takes more encoding power. Twitch’s 1080p60 example uses 6,000 kbps; if either your upload route or hardware struggles at that combination, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than accepting an unstable stream. 1080p30 is a lower-frame-rate option in Twitch’s examples at 4,500 kbps.

Choose 720p when stability or motion matters more
For fast-moving gameplay, 720p60 may be a better practical fit than 1080p30 if the encoder can handle 60 fps and the connection can hold 4,500 kbps. If capacity is tighter, Twitch’s 720p30 example is 3,000 kbps. The right choice depends on the content, connection stability, encoder load, and how viewers watch; there is no single setting that is best for every channel.
Other resolutions need testing, not invented platform numbers
The cited Twitch examples do not establish official bitrate recommendations for 480p, 900p, 936p, or 1440p. If you use one of those outputs, treat any bitrate chosen by interpolation as an estimate, check Twitch’s current guidance, and test the actual stream. Do not assume a value derived from the 720p and 1080p examples is a Twitch-endorsed setting.

How much upload speed do you need?
Video bitrate is only one part of the upload demand. Twitch notes that bitrate depends on upload speed and service limitations; OBS likewise says available upload speed and platform limits matter. A speed-test result is not proof that the route to Twitch’s ingest server can sustain the bitrate continuously. Leave headroom for network variation and other traffic, then judge the stream by its actual stability.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point when troubleshooting bitrate. This is OBS’s troubleshooting rule of thumb, not a universal guarantee or a replacement for testing the route to Twitch. If the stream is unstable, reduce the bitrate and retest.

Set bitrate, keyframes, and audio in OBS
In OBS, open Settings → Output, select the streaming output mode you use, and set the video encoder’s rate control to CBR and bitrate to the target from Twitch’s examples. Open Settings → Video to choose the output resolution and frame rate. The exact available encoder options can differ by operating system and hardware.
Set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds in the encoder’s streaming settings. Twitch’s guidelines also give AAC-LC audio guidance: 96 kbps is recommended for maximum compatibility, while 160 kbps is the maximum AAC audio bitrate. These are audio settings and should not be added to the video-bitrate figure as if they were the same stream control.

Choose an encoder your computer can sustain
Twitch discusses x264 and NVENC examples. For x264, Twitch advises starting at the veryfast preset and experimenting within the computer’s capacity; x264 uses CPU resources and encoding can tax the system. OBS generally recommends hardware encoders for performance because they move work from the CPU to specialized encoding hardware in the GPU. That does not mean every device offers the same encoder features or quality.

Check the encoder options available on your specific system rather than assuming a setting transfers across platforms. OBS, for example, says Apple VideoToolbox is supported on Apple Silicon, while Intel Mac streaming through VideoToolbox is unsupported because it lacks the constant-bitrate support required by most streaming services. Check what Twitch is receiving
After going live, use Twitch Inspector to review the bitrate, stream resolution, and encoder information Twitch reports. Compare what is being sent with the output you intended to configure. A bitrate that repeatedly dips or fluctuates is a reason to favor a lower target over a more demanding resolution.
If you get dropped frames or connection trouble
- Lower the video bitrate: OBS recommends reducing bitrate when the connection is unstable. Retest before making further changes.
- Try another Twitch server: OBS lists changing the Twitch server as a troubleshooting step; on Windows, it suggests considering TwitchTest quality results when choosing a server.
- Check network software: Review software that may interfere with OBS’s network connection.
- Separate network issues from encoding load: If the connection appears stable but the computer cannot keep up, reduce encoder demand or choose an encoder the hardware supports. Twitch notes that encoding can tax the system.
OBS’s overview guide explains the relationship between bitrate, upload speed, and service limits. Twitch’s 6,000 kbps 1080p60 example is not evidence that every account, ingest route, or setup will sustain that rate.
Enhanced Broadcasting: multiple encodes
Twitch’s Enhanced Broadcasting with Multiple Encodes documentation describes automatic configuration that can produce multiple renditions at different resolutions, frame rates, and bitrates. Its example range runs from 6 Mbps for a 1080p AVC rendition down to 200 Kbps for a 160p AVC rendition, and it recommends 1920 × 1080 or 1280 × 720 at 60 fps for best performance in the described configuration. Those details apply to that feature’s described setup; verify current availability and behavior in your Twitch account and broadcaster software before relying on it.
