For one stream, plan on about 5 Mbps for 1080p HD and 15–20 Mbps for 4K UHD. Those are service-specific starting points, not universal guarantees: Netflix recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p and 15 Mbps for 4K, while YouTube recommends sustained speeds of 5 Mbps and 20 Mbps, respectively. Your household’s total need depends on how many streams play at once, what else uses the network, and the speed that actually reaches the viewing device.
Recommended speed for one stream
Netflix and YouTube publish recommendations for their own services. The figures below are per-stream reference points; Netflix describes a stable connection speed, while YouTube labels its figures approximate recommended sustained speeds. Both help estimate what to aim for, but neither is a universal minimum for every streaming service or household.
| Quality | Netflix recommended stable connection | YouTube approximate recommended sustained speed |
|---|---|---|
| 360p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix page | 0.7 Mbps |
| 480p SD | Not listed on the cited Netflix page | 1.1 Mbps |
| 720p HD | 3 Mbps | 2.5 Mbps |
| 1080p Full HD | 5 Mbps | 5 Mbps |
| 4K UHD | 15 Mbps | 20 Mbps |

How much internet speed do I need for Netflix 4K?
Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for 4K. Treat that as its recommendation for one stream, not a promise that every title, device, or home network will play smoothly at that quality.

How much does YouTube 4K need?
YouTube’s general system-requirements table recommends 20 Mbps for 4K. YouTube separately says 4K titles need a consistent download speed of at least 15 Mbps. The difference reflects distinct guidance on YouTube’s support pages; 15–20 Mbps per stream is a useful range, not a single universal threshold.
Estimate the speed for your household
- Count simultaneous streams. Count the video streams likely to play at the same time, not the TVs or devices in the home.
- Choose the relevant service and quality figure for each stream. For instance, use the Netflix or YouTube 4K recommendation for each active 4K stream.
- Add the stream requirements. Two simultaneous 4K streams correspond to 30–40 Mbps using the cited service recommendations. That is arithmetic from their per-stream figures, not a separate provider recommendation.
- Account for other network activity and shared access. Browsing, downloads, calls, and other users also consume capacity. YouTube notes that when many people share a network, the speed available to one user may be limited. It does not specify a universal extra percentage to add.
- Measure where you watch. A broadband plan’s advertised speed does not establish the speed reaching a TV over Wi-Fi. Test the connection near the viewing device before deciding that your plan is too slow.
Is 100 Mbps enough for multiple TVs?
It can be enough for multiple simultaneous streams, depending on their quality and what else is using the connection. As an illustration, two 4K streams map to 30–40 Mbps from the Netflix and YouTube recommendations above, before other household activity. The number of TVs alone cannot answer the question; estimate using streams playing at once and check delivered speed at the devices.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Why fast broadband may still buffer or reduce picture quality
Playback quality depends on more than the plan’s headline speed. YouTube lists connection speed, player or screen size, original upload quality, and browser support among the factors that can affect quality. A fast connection cannot make a low-quality source into 4K, and some high-quality formats may not be available on a device that does not support them.
- Weak Wi-Fi at the TV: Distance, interference, or obstacles can reduce the speed available to the streaming device.
- Other active users or devices: Shared network use may leave less capacity for one stream.
- Unsupported device or browser: App, browser, screen, or format support can limit available playback quality.
- Source video below the target resolution: The connection cannot restore detail that was not present in the original video.
See YouTube’s explanation of playback quality for the factors it identifies.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Troubleshoot buffering before upgrading your plan
- Run a speed test near the TV or streaming device. Compare the result with the relevant per-stream recommendation, while remembering that other users and household activity may change available capacity.
- Reduce competing network activity temporarily. Pause large downloads or other streams and see whether playback improves.
- Improve the Wi-Fi path. Move the device nearer to the router where practical and reduce interference. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance recommends these checks when speed is low.
- Consider Ethernet if both ends support it and Wi-Fi is the likely problem. YouTube says a wired connection may help compared with wireless. A cable can address a local wireless issue, but it does not increase the capacity supplied by an internet provider.
- Check device and source limitations. Confirm that the app or browser, device, display, and video support the quality you expect.
- Reassess the broadband connection if the measured speed remains inadequate. If the result at the viewing device cannot meet the needs of your simultaneous streams, compare available service at your address by stable delivered speed, price, data limits, and availability.
These checks are diagnostic options, not guarantees that a cable, router change, or plan upgrade will fix every cause. YouTube’s TV troubleshooting guidance discusses low-speed and connection checks.
