Neither TikTok nor YouTube is universally better for creators. YouTube is the clearer fit if you want to build around long-form videos, Shorts, and a defined path to ad revenue; TikTok may fit better if your work suits its one-minute-plus Creator Rewards requirements or you want to pursue its brand-collaboration and paid-content features. The right choice depends on your format, country, eligibility, and preferred income sources—not an assumed difference in reach or earnings.
How the platforms differ for creators
The practical distinction is less about which app is “bigger” and more about what each platform’s documented programs reward. YouTube offers an ad-revenue route for qualifying long-form videos or Shorts, plus earlier access to some fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible countries. TikTok’s Creator Rewards program applies to qualifying original videos at least one minute long; TikTok also documents routes for brand collaboration, paid content, and LIVE features.

These are program rules, not evidence that either platform delivers more views, higher typical earnings, or better audience conversion. The requirements and feature availability can vary by country and change over time, so check YouTube Help and TikTok Support for the rules that apply to your account before planning around a feature.

YouTube: earlier access and full ad-revenue eligibility are different tiers
In eligible countries, expanded YouTube Partner Program entry can unlock fan-funding and Shopping features at 500 subscribers, three valid public uploads in the prior 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified watch hours in the prior 12 months or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days. Reaching that entry point does not guarantee that every feature is available to you; feature-specific requirements still apply.

The separate full ad-revenue threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus either 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the prior 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views in the prior 90 days. YouTube reviews the channel for policy compliance. Shorts-feed watch hours do not contribute to the long-form watch-hour route.
TikTok: Creator Rewards is specific to eligible original videos
TikTok’s Creator Rewards requirements include an eligible region, a personal account in good standing, a minimum age of 18 (19 in South Korea), at least 10,000 followers, and at least 100,000 video views during the prior 30 days. To generate rewards, a video must be original, high quality, and at least one minute long, and it needs at least 1,000 qualified For You views.

TikTok describes qualifying views as unique For You feed views. Paid, promoted, artificial, and under-five-second views are among the exclusions. Duets, Stitches, copied content, and lightly altered reposts do not meet TikTok’s stated definition of original content for Creator Rewards. A large total view count therefore does not by itself show that a video or account qualifies.
Compare the income routes you actually want
If your plan depends on advertising
YouTube has explicitly described long-form and Shorts routes into ad monetization. Shorts ad sharing is separate from Watch Page monetization: under YouTube’s described creator-pool mechanism, creators retain 45% of the amount allocated to them. That is a share of an allocation, not a guaranteed payment per view or a fixed rate you can apply to every Short.

TikTok Creator Rewards is also view-based, but it is not a general payment for every TikTok view. It is limited by account, region, video-format, originality, and qualified-view rules. If your usual posts are under a minute, or rely on Duets, Stitches, or lightly edited reposts, they will not meet the stated Creator Rewards video requirements.
If you want brand work, fan support, or paid content
TikTok documents TikTok One as a platform for creator, advertiser, and brand collaboration; its tools include Creative Center, Creator Marketplace, and Creative Exchange. TikTok also offers Series for paid access to creator content. These features have their own account, age, regional, and review requirements; their existence does not guarantee a campaign, buyer, or income.

YouTube’s expanded YPP can give qualifying creators earlier access to fan-funding and Shopping features in eligible countries, while full ad-revenue eligibility uses the higher threshold. If you want income beyond ads, compare the specific fan-funding, shopping, paid-content, and brand opportunities available to your account rather than treating all monetization as one program.

Choose YouTube as your primary home when
- Your production plan includes long-form videos and you can work toward the public watch-hour route, or you consistently make Shorts and want to pursue the Shorts-view route.
- You value having a documented path from expanded YPP features to full ad-revenue eligibility, and your country and channel can meet the applicable requirements.
- You want to build an income mix that may include Watch Page ads, Shorts revenue sharing, fan funding, or Shopping, subject to the relevant rules.
Choose TikTok as your primary home when
- Your repeatable format is original, high-quality video of at least one minute and you can meet the account, age, region, and recent-view requirements for Creator Rewards.
- You want to explore TikTok One collaborations or paid Series content, and those features are available to and appropriate for your account.
- Your content plan is native to TikTok and you are willing to evaluate its qualified-view rules rather than assume all views count toward rewards.
Use both only when the extra work has a purpose
Publishing on both can make sense if you can adapt each piece to the platform’s format and policy requirements without weakening your main production schedule. Decide what each channel is meant to test—such as audience response, a brand-work pipeline, or a particular video format—and assess it against your own results. The available program rules do not establish that reposting the same work on both platforms will produce a particular reach or income advantage.

Protect eligibility with original, policy-compliant work
On TikTok, Creator Rewards originality excludes Duets, Stitches, copied material, and lightly altered reposts. On YouTube, monetized videos and Shorts are also subject to reused- and repetitious-content policies and advertiser-friendly guidelines. A creator who builds a channel mainly from other people’s clips, or from minimally changed versions of existing material, should not assume that views alone will lead to monetization on either platform.
Before building a revenue plan around a program, verify the current rules for your country, account type, age, and content category on the platforms’ official help pages. Eligibility thresholds are only one part of approval; program policies and feature-specific criteria also matter.
