There is no single upload-speed requirement for every live stream. Choose an upload connection that can reliably sustain your stream’s encoder bitrate, with extra capacity for fluctuations and other devices. For YouTube Live, the recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate and codec; for Twitch, its rule of thumb is bitrate plus 30%—for example, an 6 Mbps stream bitrate calls for at least 8 Mbps upload.
Upload speed and stream bitrate are different
Encoder bitrate is the amount of data your streaming software sends each second. Upload speed is how quickly your internet connection can send data. A stream configured at 6 Mbps does not mean a 6 Mbps internet connection is enough: the connection needs headroom, and other uploads or devices may use some of its capacity.
Use the bitrate recommended by your platform as a starting point, then compare it with sustained upload capacity—not just the headline speed in an internet plan. Speed-test results can vary with time and network conditions, so test before going live and check stream health during a test broadcast.
YouTube Live upload targets by resolution and frame rate
YouTube’s figures below are recommended H.264 encoder bitrates, not required internet-plan upload speeds. Allow additional upload capacity beyond the listed bitrate. YouTube publishes different bitrate ranges for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply these H.264 figures to another codec.

| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 240p–720p at 30 fps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p at 30 fps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 24 Mbps |
| 4K (2160p) at 30 fps | 30 Mbps |
| 4K (2160p) at 60 fps | 35 Mbps |
So 1080p at 60 fps does not have one universal upload requirement. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is a 12 Mbps encoder bitrate; the upload connection must sustain that bitrate plus headroom. YouTube’s AV1 and H.265 guidance gives a 4–10 Mbps range, so identify the codec whenever comparing figures. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Twitch: leave 30% above your configured bitrate
Twitch’s general practice is to have upload speed equal to the configured stream bitrate plus 30%. Its example is a stream set to 6 Mbps: allow at least 8 Mbps upload. This is guidance, not a guarantee for every internet connection, service or multi-stream setup. See Twitch’s How Do I Stream FAQ.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
How to choose a stable upload target
- Choose your platform and output. Decide whether you are streaming to YouTube or Twitch, and select the resolution and frame rate you actually intend to use.
- Set the platform’s recommended encoder bitrate. For YouTube, use the row matching your resolution, frame rate and codec. For Twitch, account for its bitrate-plus-30% upload guidance.
- Leave room for network variation. Your connection needs capacity beyond the stream bitrate. Other devices, cloud backups, video calls and file uploads can compete for upload bandwidth.
- Test under realistic conditions. Run a speed test, then make a test stream with representative audio and movement. Monitor the platform’s stream-health indicators while broadcasting.
- Reduce settings if the stream is unstable. Lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate until the connection can sustain the stream without dropped frames or interruptions. Stability matters more than pushing for the highest setting your connection might briefly reach.
Encoder settings and practical checks
YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, which should not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube also advises testing before broadcasting and monitoring stream health. These are encoder settings; they do not change the need for upload headroom beyond the configured bitrate. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance before a broadcast.
Twitch
Twitch describes ingest bitrate as the amount of data sent to Twitch: a higher bitrate uses more available internet bandwidth. Its broadcasting guidance recommends CBR where possible and stresses balancing quality against connection and hardware limits. See Twitch’s Broadcasting Guidelines.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
What to do when your upload speed is not enough
- Lower the encoder bitrate. This reduces the stream’s data demand; make sure the resulting quality is acceptable for your content.
- Lower resolution or frame rate. Choose a less demanding output rather than retaining a high setting that causes dropped frames or interruptions.
- Pause competing uploads. Backups and large file transfers can consume capacity needed by the live stream.
- Test again at the time and on the network you will use. A single speed test cannot establish that the connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
Twitch explicitly advises choosing a stable stream over a higher-quality setting that risks dropped frames or pushes the limits of the internet connection. Its recommendations, like YouTube’s, are platform guidance rather than a guarantee of performance on a particular connection.
