A tool that acts on your X account still needs a way to do so, such as account authorization or API access. An uploaded-archive workflow gives the provider a copy of sensitive data, so compare archive handling, account permissions, retention, and deletion coverage—not just whether the archive is uploaded.

“On-device” describes where a particular step happens; it does not, by itself, establish that a tool lacks account access or network activity. Ask separately whether the archive leaves your device and what authorization the deletion step requires.

Why an X archive deserves careful handling
X says an archive is requested through account settings after identity verification and delivered as a downloadable ZIP when ready; preparation may take a few days. The machine-readable archive can contain much more than public posts: profile information, Direct Messages, attached media, followers and following, address-book information, lists, inferred interests and demographic information, and advertising information. Request the archive directly from X and inspect its contents before sharing it with another service. If you keep a local copy, secure it and consider whether backups or cloud synchronization will also store it. X documents a ZIP download but does not recommend a particular storage device.

What the TweetDelete example discloses
TweetDelete’s privacy policy says it collects a user’s X user ID, screen name, and API access keys. It says it scans tweets to determine what to delete and ordinarily uses the tweets temporarily rather than storing them in its database.
The policy also says some premium functionality requires stored tweets, including excluding tweets from deletion or uploading a Twitter data file. It says uploaded data files are automatically removed after three days. Those are the provider’s stated practices, not independently audited findings.

TweetDelete’s FAQ says archive uploads let it process older posts and that it does not store a record of what it deleted. The FAQ also describes a 3,200-post limit for ordinary access and says the limit does not apply to premium users who upload an archive. Check the vendor’s current disclosures before relying on these details; service features and policies can change.
Post limits and older history
X’s Help Center says profile timelines show up to 3,200 recent posts and points users to the archive for a snapshot beginning with their first post. The figure is a product limit, not a statistic about how many posts users typically publish. A service that processes an archive may be able to identify older posts than it can access through ordinary timeline access, but that does not establish that every archive entry is deletable or that every service supports the same coverage. How to choose a workflow with less exposure
- Request and inspect the archive through X. Use the account settings process in X’s archive instructions. Review the contents before deciding whether any third party needs a copy.
- Separate review from deletion. A local archive viewer may help you find posts without sending the archive to a provider, but confirm its network behavior. The deletion step still needs a route to act on the account.
- Read the service’s current privacy and authorization disclosures. Look for the data collected, permissions requested, archive handling, retention period, exceptions, and whether deletion results or scan data are stored.
- Check the claim, not just the label. Look for inspectable code or clear, testable statements about uploads and network activity for local tools. For online services, a policy describes the provider’s position; it does not independently prove implementation.
- Review connected-app access afterward. In current X account settings, review apps connected to the account and revoke permissions that are no longer needed. The exact settings interface may change.
Deletion does not guarantee every copy disappears
Removing posts from X does not prove that every copy previously retained by another person or service has been erased. X’s privacy policy, effective January 15, 2026, and its additional data-processing information provide context for how X may process data, including public posts and associated metadata for training machine-learning and AI models. These disclosures do not establish that deleting a post removes every third-party copy or previously derived data.
