If your TV has a picture but no sound, check mute and volume on the TV, source device, and soundbar or receiver first. Then confirm the TV is sending audio to the intended speakers and that the external system is set to the matching input. If those checks fail, reseat the connection and test another source to find out which device the problem follows.
Start with the speakers you expect to hear
Mute or volume can be set separately on a TV, a cable box or streaming device, and an external audio system. Check each one rather than assuming the TV remote controls them all.

- Turn up the TV volume and make sure the TV is not muted.
- If you are watching through a set-top box, game console, or other source device, check its volume and mute settings too.
- If you use a soundbar or receiver, confirm it is powered on, its volume is up, and it is not muted.
- If available, switch temporarily to the TV’s built-in speakers. If those work, focus next on the external audio connection or device.
Check the TV’s audio destination and the device input
A connected cable does not automatically mean the TV is routing sound through it. In the TV’s sound or speaker settings, choose the intended output, such as the external audio system. Then use the soundbar or receiver’s input control to select the input that matches the cable.

Choose the connection that both devices support
If you have more than one way to connect the TV and an audio system, check compatibility and available ports before changing settings or buying a cable. No connection type is guaranteed to fix every no-sound problem.
| Connection | When it fits | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | Both the TV and soundbar or receiver support ARC/eARC. | Use the labeled ARC/eARC ports, enable HDMI-CEC or the manufacturer’s equivalent on both devices, and match the TV output to the audio system input. |
| Optical digital | Both devices have optical ports, including when ARC is unavailable. | Connect the TV’s optical output to the audio system’s optical input, select Optical on that system, and check the TV’s digital-audio output setting and supported format. |
| Analog audio | Both devices provide compatible analog audio connections. | Connect the TV output to the audio system input and select the corresponding Analog input. |
If you use HDMI ARC or eARC
ARC and eARC work only when both devices support the feature. Sony notes that if only one device supports ARC/eARC, the feature cannot activate; an optical or compatible audio connection may be an alternative if both products have the required ports. Check the labels and manuals before assuming a port or cable supports ARC/eARC. See Sony’s connection guidance.

- Connect the TV’s port labeled ARC or eARC to the soundbar or receiver’s HDMI OUT (ARC/eARC) port.
- Enable HDMI-CEC, often given a brand-specific name such as HDMI Control or Control for HDMI, on both devices.
- Reseat the HDMI cable at both ends, then restart the TV and audio system. For an ARC setup, Sony recommends turning on the TV before the audio device while troubleshooting.
- If the TV still does not detect the audio system, temporarily disconnect other HDMI devices and check again. This can help isolate interference in the setup.
If the system remains silent, check the TV’s audio output selection and the soundbar’s input again; a correct cable alone does not set either device to the right destination.

Make sure the TV’s optical or digital audio output connects to the soundbar or receiver’s optical input, and select Optical on the audio system. Reseat the cable and check the TV’s digital-audio output setting. A loose or faulty cable, incorrect input, incompatible device settings, or unsupported audio signal or content can all prevent sound.

On some combinations of devices, setting the TV’s digital output to PCM can improve compatibility. The formats supported depend on the TV, audio system, and content, so treat PCM as a compatibility check rather than a universal setting. Sony’s optical connection troubleshooting covers these checks.
If sound is missing from only one source
If other channels, apps, or devices have sound, the issue may be limited to the source that is silent. Before changing the TV’s general audio settings, compare another channel or program and test a different source.

- SIMPLE SETUP: A single connection from this compact soundbar to the TV via an optical audio cable (included) or an HDMI cable (sold separately) has you up and running in minutes
- Check the source device’s mute and volume, its audio output format, and the cable connecting it to the TV.
- If the source is connected over HDMI, try PCM or two-channel audio on that device as a compatibility check. The exact format controls and HDMI signal options depend on the model.
- If only one app or program is silent, test another app or program. The available manufacturer guidance does not establish one universal fix for app-specific audio failures.
Use the source device’s manual for its specific audio controls; do not apply a menu path from another brand or model as if it were universal. Sony’s HDMI-source troubleshooting describes PCM or two-channel output as a compatibility check.
Find out whether the TV, connection, or audio system is at fault
When basic settings and connections look right, change one part of the setup at a time. Test another TV source or connect the soundbar to another source device if one is available. You can also try another audio device with the TV.

- Simplified 5.1ch Dolby Atmos Setup: Enjoy immersive 4D sound with real Dolby Atmos and 5.1-channel audio. Five built-in speakers, including two side-firing drivers, create wide surround without rear speakers. Precision DSP ensures <0.5 ms latency for smooth, theater-like sound. Setup takes less than 1 minute.
- Voice Clarity Enhancement: VoiceMX technology uses advanced DSP algorithms to isolate and enhance vocal frequencies in real time. Dialogue remains crisp and easy to follow by separating speech from background effects and music, even at low volumes or during intense scenes.
- 300W Output with 6-Driver System: Featuring five precision-tuned full-range drivers and a dedicated wired wooden subwoofer, the system delivers up to 300W of peak power for bold, room-filling sound. With a frequency response of 45 Hz–18 kHz and a maximum SPL of 99 dB, it reproduces everything from subtle nuances to explosive cinematic effects.
- 18 mm High-Excursion Driver: Powered by BassMX technology, the wired wooden subwoofer features a 18 mm high-excursion driver, a 5.3L tuned cabinet, and a high-density magnetic circuit. This design delivers deeper, tighter bass with greater air displacement and enhanced low-frequency performance—bringing more realism to every scene.
- HDMI eARC for True Dolby Atmos: HDMI eARC supports up to 37 Mbps of bandwidth, unlocking the full potential of lossless Dolby Atmos 5.1-channel audio. Compared to standard ARC, eARC delivers richer surround effects and greater detail. CEC integration allows the TV and soundbar to work together with unified control.
- If the TV’s built-in speakers work but the soundbar does not, test the soundbar with another source. If it works there, the original TV connection or its settings are implicated, though that does not identify a specific failed component.
- If the soundbar has no sound with another test source either, Samsung recommends requesting service for the soundbar.
- If the problem follows one source device, check that device’s audio output, mute, volume, and connection.
Samsung’s soundbar troubleshooting guide uses a test connection to help distinguish a soundbar problem from a TV or connection issue.
When troubleshooting is no longer a settings problem
If a soundbar or receiver remains silent when tested with another source, contact its manufacturer about service. Persistent symptoms after checking output selection, inputs, cables, and another source may indicate a hardware issue. Do not open the TV or attempt internal component repairs based on the symptom alone; use the manufacturer’s repair or service support.
