If your Vizio TV does not show a USB drive, first check the television’s exact model manual. Vizio’s USB requirements and menu steps vary by model: manuals for several models specify a FAT32-formatted USB flash drive, but that is not a universal rule for every Vizio TV. Then check that the drive type and file formats are supported and open the TV’s USB or media player.
1. Find your Vizio TV’s model number
Look for the model number on the label on the back of the television or in its settings/about screen. Use that number to find the matching Vizio manual before changing the drive’s format or assuming the TV is faulty. File-system requirements, supported media, port locations, and menu navigation differ among model families.

2. Test with a USB flash drive
Start with a basic USB flash or thumb drive. The Vizio manuals cited here describe those devices as the intended media source. Some specifically say their media player is not designed for external hard drives; an older manual also excludes USB hubs. That does not establish a rule for every Vizio model, so check your manual rather than treating a hard drive or hub as a reliable compatibility test.

3. Check the required format before reformatting
Several Vizio manuals specify FAT32, while an older model-family manual accepts FAT or FAT32. These are model-specific instructions, not a single format requirement for all Vizio televisions.
- The 2020 V-Series V655-H9 manual says the USB flash drive must be formatted as FAT32. V-Series V655-H9 user manual.
- The E320-A1 manual also specifies FAT32 for its USB thumb drive. E320-A1 user manual.
- The older SV421XVT/SV471XVT manual says FAT or FAT32. SV421XVT/SV471XVT user manual.
Formatting erases the drive. Copy any files you want to keep somewhere else first, and only reformat if the instructions for your TV call for it.

4. Check the media files and open the TV’s player
A recognized drive does not guarantee that every file on it will appear or play. The manuals require supported file extensions, and the supported formats can vary by model; examples such as .mp3 and .jpg in one manual should not be taken as a compatibility list for another television.
After inserting the drive, open the relevant USB or media interface. Depending on the TV generation, the manual may direct you to a Multimedia or Media app, or to a USB option on the home screen. Follow the navigation for your exact model rather than relying on a menu path from a different Vizio set.

5. Remove the drive as the manual directs
The cited manuals instruct users to turn off the TV before removing the USB drive, or warn against disconnecting it while the television is on. Follow the instruction in your model’s manual.

- Recheck the model number and confirm that you are using the matching manual.
- Try a basic USB flash drive and confirm that its format matches the manual.
- Open the specified USB/media player and check whether the drive appears there.
- Test files with extensions listed as supported in that model’s manual.
The manuals available for these model examples do not establish a universal drive-capacity limit, power requirement, firmware fix, or failure threshold. If a basic drive that meets your set’s documented requirements remains absent, contact Vizio support with the TV’s model number; the evidence here alone cannot establish that the TV or drive has failed.
