To get a Swedish IP address, connect to a VPN server located in Sweden, then check your public IP and its reported location. Websites you visit will generally see the VPN server’s address instead of your usual public IP. That changes one location signal; it does not make you anonymous or guarantee access to a particular site or streaming service.
How a Swedish IP address works
A VPN routes your internet traffic through a server in its network. When that server is in Sweden, the destination website sees the server’s public IP address rather than the public IP assigned to your regular connection. Sweden’s privacy authority, IMY, explains that VPNs and web proxies replace your IP address with their own (IMY’s guidance on browsing more anonymously).

A web proxy can also substitute an IP address, but the practical steps below focus on VPN apps because the cited providers document selecting Sweden in their apps. Neither method removes all identifying signals. IMY notes that devices, browsers, cookies, internet providers, routers, and websites can leave or collect traces. It also explains that IP addresses and cookies can be personal data when they can be linked to a person (IMY’s explanation of personal data).
Get a Swedish IP address with a VPN
- Check the server list and plan. Choose a VPN whose current server list includes Sweden, and confirm that Swedish locations are available on the plan you intend to use. Provider features and plan terms can change. Proton says its Free plan does not include Swedish servers and that Swedish streaming servers require Plus (Proton’s Sweden server page). Treat those details as the provider’s current claims, not an independent assessment.
- Install the provider’s app. Use the app on the device you will use to access the website or service. Check that it supports that device and operating system.
- Select Sweden and connect. Open the app’s server list or map, choose Sweden, and connect. Proton and NordVPN document selecting Sweden in their respective apps (Proton’s streaming guide; NordVPN’s connection instructions). App labels and available locations can vary.
- Check the resulting public IP. Use an IP-check tool and note both the displayed IP and the reported country. Check again after connecting; Proton describes this before-and-after verification in its instructions (Proton’s IP-check guide). If the tool still reports your usual country, confirm the VPN says it is connected and try another Swedish server if one is available.
- Consider whether you need a fixed address. Most VPN connections use shared or changing addresses. If you need one IP for an allowlist or repeated access, check whether the provider offers a dedicated Swedish IP and review its current locations and terms. NordVPN’s support page lists Stockholm for dedicated IP availability; this is a provider listing that may change (NordVPN’s dedicated IP locations).
What to compare when choosing a VPN
There is no provider ranking established here. Compare the options against your actual use rather than relying on server-count or speed claims, which are provider-reported and can change.

- Sweden on your plan: Verify that a Swedish exit location is included in the specific plan, not merely listed somewhere on the provider’s website.
- Shared or dedicated IP: A shared address is usually adequate for ordinary browsing. A dedicated address may be relevant for allowlisting or consistency, but check location availability and terms.
- Device support and app controls: Confirm the app runs on the device you need and makes it possible to select Sweden directly.
- Privacy policy and audits: Read what the provider says it logs and look for relevant independent audit information. Do not treat a changed IP as proof that a VPN keeps no records.
- Acceptance by the destination: A website may recognize or block a VPN’s IP range. A Swedish server location alone does not ensure the service will accept the connection.
- Price and cancellation terms: Check the current price, renewal terms, and refund conditions directly with the provider before subscribing.
Why a website may not recognize your location as Sweden
IP geolocation is not the only possible location signal, and a service’s decision may not match the country reported by an IP-check tool. SVT Play’s official help page lists VPN or proxy use, dynamic IP allocation, device location settings, and app or phone-number context as possible reasons it may think someone in Sweden is abroad (SVT’s troubleshooting guide). That page concerns people physically in Sweden, so its list should not be read as a universal explanation of how every service checks location. It does illustrate why one Swedish IP may not settle a service’s location decision.
- Disconnect and reconnect to the VPN, or select a different Swedish server if available.
- Check that the VPN app reports an active connection and that an IP-check tool reports Sweden.
- Review device location settings and, where appropriate, clear the relevant site’s cookies or cache.
- Try the service’s own troubleshooting steps or contact its support team. Some services may use account, app, payment, or other location context in addition to IP; requirements differ by service.
Does a Swedish IP guarantee streaming access?
No. A Swedish exit IP may affect the country a streaming service associates with your connection, but it cannot guarantee access to a particular catalogue or service. Platforms can identify or block VPN addresses, and services may apply their own account, app, or location requirements. Provider statements about streaming support describe the provider’s offering; they are not a promise that a third-party platform will work for every user.

Privacy and legal limits to keep in mind
A VPN changes the public IP visible to destinations and can protect traffic in some network contexts, but it is not a promise of anonymity. Your device, browser, cookies, network, accounts, and the websites you use may still expose or retain information. Use a VPN for the specific connection or location need you have, not as a substitute for managing account privacy or device settings.
Whether using a VPN is lawful and whether the activity accessed through it is lawful are separate questions. If you are considering a specific restricted use, check current local law and the relevant service’s terms rather than assuming a VPN makes that activity permitted.
