The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Tuskira’s open-source AI Agent Gateway is designed to let an AI agent call MCP tools without putting the tool server’s credential in the agent’s configuration. The gateway stores that credential and injects it into outbound requests. It also offers profile-based tool scoping, request logging, and proxying for supported LLM traffic. Those are the project’s documented capabilities, not independent proof that it is secure; the repository labels the software pre-1.0 alpha.
How the gateway keeps credentials out of agent configs
In a direct setup, an agent may need a tool server’s credential to authenticate its requests. Tuskira’s gateway changes that path: the agent connects to the gateway, which stores the upstream MCP credential in an encrypted secret store and injects it into calls to the tool server. The agent therefore does not need to receive that particular credential. The project describes this flow in its GitHub repository.

This is credential separation, not a guarantee that an agent cannot misuse tools. The gateway still needs correctly configured identities, profiles, and permissions, and the agent can only be limited to the extent those controls are properly applied.

The gateway documents profile-based tool scoping: an agent profile can specify which tools are available, and the gateway checks tool calls against that scope. A crucial configuration detail is how the caller is associated with a profile. According to the repository, binding an API key to the intended profile enforces that association. If the key is not bound, the caller can name a profile in a request header. A profile name supplied by the caller is not equivalent to an identity-bound restriction.
#1 Best Overall
- FIDO2 & Passkey Ready: Business-ready and FIDO2 L1 certified. This key is supported by major management suites and is ideal for both individual and enterprise deployment. Works seamlessly with Gmail, Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Coinbase, and more.
- Universal Connectivity (USB-A ): Features a built-in USB-A connector—simply unfold the key and plug it into your compatible PC or laptop for seamless authentication on the go.
- Dedicated Manager App: Use the Thetis Manager App for the initial hardware PIN setup. Setting the PIN on the device first ensures a smooth registration process. Once the PIN is configured, you can begin registering the key across your favorite FIDO2-compatible online services.
- Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
- Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
When evaluating a deployment, check which profile each gateway-issued key is bound to and confirm that the key cannot select a broader profile. Do not assume that merely defining profiles enforces least privilege for every caller.
What else the gateway handles
Tuskira presents the gateway as one service in front of MCP tool servers and supported LLM paths. Its repository describes gateway-issued API keys scoped by tenant and role, LLM request proxying, call logs, token-usage and estimated-cost visibility, and an embedded administrative console. It names Claude directly or through AWS Bedrock, OpenAI, and Gemini among the supported model paths. These are documented project features; verify support and configuration against the version you plan to deploy.

- Edge AI appliance that can analyze up to 1,000 smart detection events per hour, enhancing events with detailed classifications and natural language search.
- Provides detailed object and context descriptions
- Low-latency natural language retrieval
- Transcribe speech events
- Sharpen face recognition images for enhanced identification
The documented listener ports are:
| Port | Purpose |
|---|---|
| 8080 | MCP traffic |
| 8081 | Control REST API and administrative UI |
| 8082 | LLM traffic |
Logging can help operators inspect tool calls and usage, but the presence of logs does not itself establish that access policies are correct or that the deployment has passed an independent security review.
Deployment requirements
The project documents Docker Compose deployment and a separate build-and-run path outside Docker. Its quickstart lists these prerequisites:

What to weigh before using it
The repository describes the gateway as pre-1.0 alpha software and warns that APIs and configuration may change between minor versions. That maturity status matters if you are considering it as part of an access-control boundary: plan to test upgrades and policy behavior, and do not treat the project’s feature descriptions as third-party security validation.

For a useful evaluation, verify where upstream secrets are stored and injected, whether each caller’s identity is bound to its permitted profile, which MCP tools are allowed at invocation time, and what the logs expose. Also confirm the LLM paths, data-store dependencies, and operational behavior in your own environment. These checks distinguish a configured gateway from an assumed security boundary.
How it differs from other gateway approaches
“Agent gateway” can refer to different designs. Tuskira describes a self-hosted service that proxies MCP and LLM traffic and injects stored credentials into tool calls. The s-gw repository describes a local, approval-based credential-broker approach for coding-agent actions and labels its project early preview. agentgateway’s backend authentication documentation explains upstream authentication separately from authorization policy. AgentGate documentation describes another self-hosted agent gateway. These descriptions indicate different approaches; they are not a verified feature-by-feature comparison.
