What Samsung does document is how to change the USB connection mode that the notification offers. A community-reported route to adjust USB notification categories may work on some models and software versions, but it is not a confirmed universal instruction. This guide explains what you can change officially, how to try the community route safely, and what you give up if you hide the alert.
What you can and cannot change
When you plug a Galaxy phone into a computer, charger, or car, Android shows a notification that reads something like “USB for charging phone.” That notification is the entry point for choosing how the phone uses the USB connection. Samsung’s US support page on USB connection modes says that, starting with One UI 8.0, the default mode is “Charging phone only.” Samsung’s page describes how to change the mode, but it does not say that the mode change turns the notification off.

Two different things are easy to confuse:
- The USB mode controls what the connection does, such as whether a computer can browse files or whether Android Auto can run.
- The notification category controls whether Android displays that alert in the notification shade.
Step 1: Change the USB mode (officially documented)
Use this route if your goal is to make the connection work for file transfer or Android Auto. Samsung’s US instructions for a Galaxy device are:
Recommended Free Tools
- Swipe down from the top of the screen to open the Quick panel.
- Tap the “USB for charging phone” notification.
- Tap the notification again to show the other USB options.
- Select the mode you need, such as “Transferring files / Android Auto.”
Because the default mode is “Charging phone only,” a computer may not see your phone’s files, and Android Auto may not start, until you make this change. The notification will still appear when you connect, because this route manages the connection rather than the alert.

Step 2: Try the community-reported notification route (model-dependent)
A reply in the Samsung Members community, dated 24 February 2025, describes a possible way to adjust USB notification categories. It is user advice, not an official Samsung procedure, and it may not match your device. If your phone shows the options, the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Tap the three-dot menu and choose Show system apps.
- Select Android System or USB Settings, depending on which one your phone lists.
- Tap Notifications.
- Find the USB-related notification categories and adjust them.
If the route is missing
Many Galaxy models may not expose these categories, or may not let you turn them off. If you cannot find them, check the manual for your exact model and One UI version, or contact Samsung support. Do not install third-party notification blockers or change system files to force the result, because those tools can affect other alerts and security prompts.

Comparing the two options
| Factor | Change USB mode | Adjust notification category |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Sets what the USB connection does | Sets whether Android shows the alert |
| Effect on file transfer or Android Auto | Changes availability; these features need the right mode | No direct effect on the connection |
| Samsung documentation | Documented in Samsung’s US USB mode instructions, with the default set to “Charging phone only” from One UI 8.0 | Not documented by Samsung; described only in a 2025 community reply |
| Device dependence | Menu names and paths may vary by model, software, and app version | May be missing or limited on some devices |
| Best use | Making a computer, Android Auto, or tethering work | Reducing alert clutter, if your phone allows it |
When the notification comes with a connection problem
If the notification appears along with failed transfers or a connection that keeps dropping, the cable and mode are more likely causes than the notification settings. Samsung’s Singapore support page on PC file transfer advises the following checks:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Use a compatible USB data cable. A charge-only cable can show the connection notification but will not transfer files.
- Open the notification panel and tap the USB settings notification.
- Select “Transferring files / Android Auto.”
Samsung notes that menu names, features, and paths may vary by device model, software, and app version. Changing the cable does not turn off notifications, so treat it as a connection fix only.

Before you hide the alert
Hiding the notification does not change how the connection behaves, but a mode you have not set can still block what you need. Before you change anything, consider what depends on the USB connection:
- File transfer to a computer requires “Transferring files / Android Auto” or a similar data mode.
- Android Auto uses the same mode setting as file transfer.
- Tethering is a separate USB function that Samsung describes alongside charging and file transfer.
- Charging works in the default mode, so a charge-only setup is safe for power alone.
If you change a notification category and later miss a message about a connection problem, return to the same Notifications screen and turn the category back on.
