A Garmin watch produces two kinds of measurements that rely on different technology. GPS determines where you are, and that position drives recorded distance, pace, and speed. A wrist-based optical sensor estimates your heart rate. Most accuracy complaints come from one of these two systems, and the fixes for one rarely improve the other. Identify which number is bothering you before changing settings or buying accessories.
Garmin’s own guidance gives the most reliable improvements for GPS: a clear view of the sky, a patient satellite lock before you start, and current satellite prediction data. For heart rate, the largest gains come from fit, sensor cleanliness, a correct activity profile, and a proper warm-up. If heart rate must be precise, a compatible chest strap is the option Garmin itself recommends.

Improving GPS position, distance, and pace
GPS accuracy depends mostly on the signal environment. Garmin states that GPS works best with a clear view of the sky and horizon. Signals pass through clouds, glass, and plastic, but most solid objects, including buildings and mountains, block them. Reflected signals from those same surfaces degrade positioning. Dense tree cover, city streets with tall buildings, and narrow valleys therefore produce the wobbly tracks and inflated distances that many runners and cyclists notice.
Acquire a satellite lock before you start
The following sequence follows Garmin’s GPS guidance and is the most dependable habit for better acquisition and track consistency. It improves the odds of a clean start but does not guarantee a precise track.

- Go outdoors to a spot with an open view of the sky. Move away from buildings, overhangs, and large trees before you begin.
- Stand still while the watch searches for satellites. Movement during acquisition makes the initial position estimate less reliable.
- Wait for the GPS-ready indication before you press start. Garmin says acquisition may take 30-60 seconds.
- Sync the watch with Garmin Connect or Garmin Express so it receives the latest EPO or CPE satellite prediction file. Predictions that are out of date make the watch slower to lock.
Menu names for these steps vary between models, so check the activity start and sync screens in your watch’s owner’s manual.
Why a noisy track is not always a faulty watch
GPS drift and poor satellite geometry affect recorded distance, pace, and speed. Any metric calculated from the recorded track inherits those errors, so a jagged route or a pace that spikes between splits usually reflects the signal environment rather than a defect. Repeating the same route in the same conditions helps you judge whether a problem is consistent. Garmin’s guidance does not present recalibration or generic accessories as cures for poor reception, so do not expect either to fix a track recorded under bad sky view.

Satellite modes: the accuracy and battery trade-off
Garmin offers several satellite configurations. Which ones appear depends on the model, so the menu location and availability should be confirmed in your watch’s manual. The table summarizes Garmin’s own descriptions.

| Mode | What Garmin says | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| GPS only | Uses the GPS constellation alone and is the comparison point for the faster-acquiring modes below. | Slower acquisition than All Systems, according to Garmin’s comparison. |
| GPS plus GLONASS, or GPS plus Galileo | Adds a second constellation to GPS. | Garmin’s satellite-options material does not give separate battery or accuracy figures for these pairings. |
| All Systems | Combines multiple constellations, offering performance benefits in challenging environments and faster acquisition than GPS only. | Draws the battery faster. |
| All Systems + Multi-Band | Adds multiple frequency bands. Garmin describes improved positioning, more consistent tracks, and fewer multipath and atmospheric errors in challenging environments. | Available only on supported devices. Garmin’s sources do not state a battery figure for this mode. |
| UltraTrac | Records points and sensor data less frequently to conserve battery. | Reduces the quality of the recorded activity. |
For a route through open terrain with a good sky view, GPS-only or the lighter combinations may be enough. For urban running, forest trails, or mountain routes, All Systems or All Systems + Multi-Band is the mode Garmin positions for challenging environments, at the cost of battery life. UltraTrac suits long events where battery matters more than track detail.

What Garmin’s accuracy figures mean
Garmin publishes approximate accuracy figures on its support pages. The pages did not show publication dates, so these figures are cited as Garmin support content accessed in 2026. They are manufacturer statements, not independent tests, and none is a guarantee for an individual activity.
| Figure | Applies to | Conditions stated by Garmin |
|---|---|---|
| About ±2 m (6 ft) | Multi-band devices | Ideal conditions, compared with the figure below. |
| ±3 m (10 ft) | Other models | Ideal conditions. |
| Within 15 m (49 ft) 95% of the time | Garmin GPS receivers, per Garmin’s GPS Accuracy page | Stated as a 95% figure, with no separate test conditions given. |
| Within 5 to 10 m (16 to 33 ft) | Garmin GPS receivers, per Garmin’s GPS Accuracy page | Normal conditions. |
Multi-band operation helps because multiple frequencies allow the watch to reject signals reflected off buildings, trees, or mountains and to correct for atmospheric effects such as ionospheric error. Those are the reasons Garmin gives for the tighter ideal-condition figure, and they explain why multi-band helps most in difficult terrain rather than on open roads.

Heart rate: getting a reliable wrist reading
Garmin’s optical heart-rate sensor shines light into the skin and measures changes in blood volume in the capillaries below. Anything that changes the light path or blood flow at the sensor changes the reading. The steps below address the most controllable causes.
Wear the watch correctly
- Position the watch above the wrist bone, not on it.
- Fit it snugly enough to maintain skin contact, but comfortably. A loose watch creates a gap that lets in ambient light and movement. A watch tightened too far can restrict blood flow and distort the signal.
- Clean debris, sunscreen, and lotion from the sensor, and dry the skin and sensor before putting the watch on.
Set the profile and keep the watch current
- Choose the activity profile that matches the workout, since the watch processes signal differently for running, cycling, and strength sessions.
- Keep the watch software up to date.
- Check that user profile details are correct, including age, height, weight, and maximum heart rate. Garmin uses these values in its heart-rate calculations.
Warm up before starting the timer
Garmin recommends a 10-15 minute warm-up before you start the workout timer. The warm-up gives your body and the sensor time to settle into a more consistent signal. Cold weather, activities that flex the wrist, and gripping can all add variation. Tattoos over the sensor area can also interfere with optical readings. These are sources of variation rather than evidence that a watch is defective.

When a chest strap is worth it
Garmin recommends a compatible heart-rate monitor strap when heart-rate accuracy is critical, for example during threshold intervals, structured zone training, or medically supervised exercise plans. Compatibility varies by watch model, so confirm it for the exact model before buying. A strap improves heart-rate measurement only. It does nothing for GPS position, distance, or pace, so do not treat it as a GPS accessory.
What the heart-rate data is not for
Garmin states: “Garmin watches are not medical devices, and the data provided by them is not intended to be utilized for medical purposes and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.” Use the readings to track training trends and effort, and consult a clinician about any health concern.
