Depending on the model, that can mean the back, the frame, raised rims around the display, the camera bar, or a cover over the hinge. What a case cannot be shown to do, based on the manufacturer material available, is guarantee that the hinge keeps working, that the inner folding screen survives, or that the phone is undamaged after a drop. Coverage is also tied to the exact phone model, so a case that fits one generation may not match another.
What a foldable case physically covers
Foldable cases are not interchangeable with ordinary slab-phone cases. The parts that need covering change when the phone folds, and manufacturers design around that. The table below compares the coverage claims made on the product pages for four foldable cases. Each entry reflects what the listing says, not an independent measurement.

The practical reading is that a hinge-covering case adds material over an area that would otherwise be exposed. Whether that material absorbs impact, stops dust, or changes how the hinge moves is a separate question, and the listings do not answer it.

Why the hinge is the hardest part to describe
Google’s explanation of how it designed the Pixel Fold hinge helps explain why hinge coverage is listed as a feature at all. In its design article, Google states: “When it opens, the hinge is completely flat; it is moved entirely out of the way of the Pixel Fold’s display, which is what allows the phone to be so thin.” That passage describes the phone’s own mechanism. It does not describe a case, and it should not be read as evidence that any accessory protects the hinge or the display beneath it.

The same caution applies to the Samsung material. Samsung Newsroom South Africa’s article “Fold It or Flip It, Samsung’s New Foldable Devices Are Designed to Last” concerns the Galaxy Z Fold3 and Z Flip3, a 2021 generation. It discusses hinge and debris-management design in those phones. Those features belong to the devices, not to aftermarket cases, and they should not be carried over to current models.
What a case cannot be shown to prevent
Readers often want a yes or no answer to whether a case prevents damage. The manufacturer pages do not support that level of claim, so it helps to separate what is stated from what is not.

Hinge failure
A hinge cover is a physical barrier over an exposed area. The listings describe it as covering the hinge. None of the product pages cited here show that the case prevents hinge failure, and none show how the case affects the hinge’s movement over time.

Raised edges can be described as raised edges. A listing that says the rim protects the screen edge is describing a design feature. It does not establish that the inner display is safe from pressure, impact, or folding stress. Google’s hinge article describes the phone’s engineering and says nothing about case performance on the inner display.

Drops and impacts
No quantified drop height, impact rating, or independent drop-test result appears in the manufacturer material reviewed for this article. The listings support the presence of features such as raised edges and hinge coverage. They do not establish how much force those features absorb, or whether a dropped phone would survive intact.
How to check coverage before buying
Use the following checks on the exact model listing, not on a general “foldable case” search result:

- Confirm the model name and generation on the listing, for example Pixel Fold or Galaxy Z Fold 6, and match it against the model printed on your phone’s box or in its settings under Settings > About phone (on Pixel devices) or Settings > About phone > Software information (on many Galaxy devices). Menu names can vary by software version.
- Identify whether the hinge is covered by a cover or spine, or whether the listing only mentions raised edges around the screen.
- Check whether the listing describes the case as usable with the phone both open and closed. Google’s Pixel Fold case listing makes this claim; many listings do not.
- Look for camera coverage only if you need it. A rim around the camera bar is a stated feature on some listings, but not on all of them.
- Treat each protective claim as the manufacturer’s description. A listing that says “full hinge coverage” tells you what the case covers, not how it performs.
Comparing two cases on these points is reasonable. Ranking them on protection is not supported by the evidence available, because no independent comparative testing was found.
What the evidence does and does not establish
The claims in this article come from four kinds of material: Google’s product listing for the Pixel Fold case, Spigen’s listings for the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Pixel Fold, a ZAGG product page, and Google’s and Samsung’s own design articles. No percentage reduction in damage, drop height, or certification for any foldable case was found in these sources, so none is reported here. Where a case page claims protection, the accurate statement is that the page names a feature and says it is designed to protect a given area. It is not a measured guarantee.

The clearest reader takeaway is the narrow one: a foldable case covers the surfaces its listing names, and the listing is the only place to confirm that coverage for your exact model.
