Choose a way to turn TalkBack off

Google notes that TalkBack shortcut setup varies by device manufacturer, Android version and TalkBack version. If one route is unavailable or behaves differently, try another. Google’s TalkBack help describes the available controls and navigation.

Turn it off with the volume keys
- Press and hold both volume keys at the same time for a few seconds.
- Listen for confirmation that TalkBack has been turned off.
This shortcut works only when it is configured for TalkBack on your device. If nothing happens, use Assistant or Settings instead.
Ask Google Assistant
- Activate Google Assistant using the method available on your phone.
- Say, “Hey Google, turn off TalkBack.”
- Listen for confirmation.
This option depends on Assistant being set up and available on the device. If it cannot carry out the request, use Settings.

Switch off TalkBack in Settings
- Open Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack.
- Switch off Use TalkBack.
- If a confirmation appears, focus its control with one tap and double-tap to activate it.
While TalkBack is on, a single tap focuses an item, and a double-tap anywhere activates the focused item. Use two fingers to scroll through a page or list. These gestures let you reach the TalkBack switch and its confirmation without relying on ordinary one-tap navigation. Google’s TalkBack navigation guidance explains these interaction basics.
Stop TalkBack from turning on accidentally
Turning TalkBack off does not necessarily disable the shortcut that can turn it on. To remove that shortcut, open Settings > Accessibility > TalkBack > TalkBack shortcut and switch it off. This keeps the TalkBack setting separate from the shortcut used to activate it.

Use an external keyboard on the latest Android 16
Google documents an external-keyboard toggle for a device running the latest Android 16: press Action + Alt + T. The Action key may be the Windows key on a Windows keyboard or Command on a Mac keyboard. This option is specific to the documented Android version and a keyboard with the appropriate Action key; it is not the general method for other devices. - Try another method above: shortcut availability, Assistant setup and Settings navigation differ.
- In Settings, look under Accessibility for TalkBack; menu wording or placement may vary.
- Consult your device manufacturer’s accessibility guidance if the TalkBack controls are missing or the instructions do not fit your software version.
