You can move pictures to a compatible microSD card with Samsung’s My Files app: select the images, choose Move, open the SD card destination, and tap Move here. Choose Copy instead if you want the originals to remain on your phone. First check that your exact Galaxy model supports microSD; Samsung cautions that not all Samsung devices do.
Before you transfer pictures
- Check compatibility. Look up your exact phone or tablet model in its specifications or Samsung support information. Samsung says not all devices support microSD cards.
- Insert the card. Once a supported device detects an inserted card, the SD card destination should appear in My Files.
- Decide whether to move or copy. Move relocates the selected files and can free internal storage; Copy leaves the originals on the phone.
Move or copy pictures with My Files
My Files is Samsung’s documented file-management route. Folder names and screens can vary by carrier and software version.

- Open My Files.
- Tap Images, or open the folder where the pictures are stored.
- Touch and hold one picture to select it, then select any other pictures you want to transfer.
- Tap Move to relocate the selected files, or tap Copy to leave originals in place.
- Return to the My Files home page and tap SD card.
- Open the destination folder. Tap Move here or Copy here to finish.
Samsung’s instructions say this My Files workflow transfers files to storage destinations; it does not use another app, such as Gallery, as the destination. That is separate from the Gallery album method below.

Use Gallery to move pictures into an SD-card album
Samsung UK documents an alternative that creates an album on the card and then moves pictures into it. The menus may not appear on every device or software version.

- Open Gallery and go to Albums.
- Open the options menu and choose to create an album.
- Choose SD card as the album’s storage location, enter a name, and create it.
- Return to the pictures, select the image or images, and open More options.
- Choose Move to album, then select the new album.
If you do not see these options, use My Files instead. See Samsung UK’s SD-card instructions for the Gallery workflow.
If the SD card does not appear
- Check that your exact Galaxy model supports microSD.
- Make sure the card is inserted in the device. Samsung says the SD card destination appears when a card is inserted and the device supports it.
- Reopen My Files and check its home page for SD card.
- If the device supports external storage but not a card, Samsung also documents USB storage as another possible destination.
Samsung’s US guides explain microSD compatibility and transferring files with My Files and moving or copying photos, videos, and music. Samsung notes that screens and settings can vary by carrier and software version.
