To limit a smart TV’s recognition of what is playing, find and disable its ACR or interactive-TV setting. There is no single setting that Samsung, LG and Sony TVs all leave on by default: availability, consent and menu names vary by model, software and country. ACR identifies on-screen content; it is not the same as a camera watching you.
What smart-TV viewing recognition does
Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) identifies content displayed on a TV. A manufacturer or service may use the resulting information for recommendations, audience measurement or advertising. The details depend on the TV’s features, agreements, market and choices made during setup.

Samsung says its optional ACR can create content signatures and collect viewing history, such as programs watched and viewing times, along with a personalized service identifier and IP address. Samsung also says this feature does not record or watch the content displayed on the TV. That is different from a camera observing the room; the cited ACR descriptions concern identifying on-screen content.

Do not infer that disabling ACR stops every kind of data collection. TV operating systems and installed apps can have separate privacy practices and controls.

How to turn off viewing recognition by brand
Before changing settings, note your TV’s exact model, software generation and country. The names below are not interchangeable universal switches, and a missing menu may mean the model uses another path or does not offer that feature.
Samsung: review Viewing Information Services
Open the TV’s privacy controls and look for Viewing Information Services. Review the consent and switch off or opt out of the service if it is enabled. Samsung says ACR runs only when a user has opted in through the Viewing Information Services notice during setup or later enabled the optional service in settings. Its support guidance does not specify one menu route for every model, so menu labels and locations may differ.

LG: inspect privacy settings and agreements
Review the TV’s privacy settings and applicable user agreements for ACR-related choices, then disable the feature if offered and unwanted. LG says users can choose whether to use ACR and can disable it through TV settings. LG does not provide one universal menu path in its US statement; data processing and potential sharing vary with the feature, agreement, market and user choices.

On certain BRAVIA models, look for Samba Interactive TV. Sony’s directions for Android TV models use Settings > System Preferences > Interactive TV Settings or Samba Interactive TV. Older non-Android menus differ. Check the support information or manual for your exact model; Sony’s Samba guidance applies to specific products, not every Sony TV.

What switching off ACR does—and does not do
The control targets a particular content-recognition or interactive-TV function. It should not be treated as a master privacy switch. Samsung’s SmartTV privacy supplement says third-party app providers may receive device information and usage data, and that recommendation and marketing features are separate considerations. Review your TV’s other privacy options and the privacy controls inside each installed app if you want to limit collection beyond ACR.
Independent 2024 research by Anselmi and colleagues measured ACR network traffic from Samsung and LG TVs in US and UK test setups. In the tested configurations, researchers observed ACR activity in some external-display scenarios and, after opting out, no communication with the identified ACR domains. They also found country-specific differences. Those results describe the tested devices and scenarios; they do not establish behavior for every model, app, firmware version or market.

A practical privacy check
- Record the TV model, software generation and country or market.
- Open the TV’s privacy settings and review relevant consent notices and user agreements.
- Disable the viewing-recognition option you do not want: Viewing Information Services on applicable Samsung TVs, ACR-related choices on LG TVs, or Samba Interactive TV on supported Sony BRAVIA models.
- Review app-level privacy controls and other TV settings separately; an ACR opt-out does not cover all data collection.
- After a major software update, revisit the privacy menu to confirm the setting and its label have not changed.
