Sub-flows, Groups, and Containers: What Makes Nested Flows Hard

Nesting means spatial grouping in React Flow but reusable logic in Node-RED. Here are the boundary, layout, and implementation rules that matter.

Nesting does not break every flow library, but it does expose difficult design choices: whether a parent is only a visual grouping or a reusable unit of logic, how edges cross its boundary, and how layout and movement behave. React Flow’s parent-child nodes and Node-RED’s reusable subflows show why the same word can describe very different features.

What does “nesting” mean in a flow editor?

It can mean at least two different things. In React Flow, a parent-child relationship places nodes in a spatial hierarchy: a child’s position is relative to its parent and it moves with that parent. That relationship is not semantic encapsulation; React Flow notes that the child is “not really a child markup-wise.” React Flow’s Sub Flows guide describes a subflow as “A sub flow is a flow inside a node.”

Node-RED uses “subflow” for a different abstraction: a collection of nodes collapsed into one workspace node that can be reused. The editor guide says subflows can reduce visual complexity or package reusable logic. Node-RED’s Subflows guide

Why do nested flows create engineering pressure?

Edges cross the boundary

A graph that fits inside a container is not necessarily a graph whose connections stay inside it. An edge may connect an internal node to an external one, so a layout engine must account for both the hierarchy and the connection that crosses it. React Flow’s layout guide documents an open Dagre issue that prevents correct subflow layout when internal nodes connect to external nodes. This is a specific documented limitation, not evidence that every library fails in the same way. React Flow’s layouting guide

Position and movement need explicit rules

In React Flow, a child node’s position is relative to its parent. The child moves with the parent, but the relationship does not by itself constrain the child to the parent’s bounds. Set the child’s extent to parent when it should remain inside those bounds. The API also documents expandParent, which can expand a parent when a child is dragged to its edge. Rendering order becomes part of the hierarchy

React Flow documents a rendering behavior that can surprise implementers: edges connected to parented nodes render above nodes by default, unlike ordinary edges. If that layering is undesirable, use the documented zIndex controls to adjust it. A container’s visual appearance and its graph relationships therefore need to be considered together. React Flow’s Sub Flows guide

Layout algorithms must understand nested graphs

React Flow does not implement a layout solution itself; it points users to external libraries. Its comparison lists Dagre, ELK, and D3-Hierarchy with different capabilities. Dagre’s subflow support has the cross-boundary caveat above. ELK is listed as supporting dynamic node sizes, subflow layout, and edge routing; that capability listing does not establish that ELK eliminates every nesting problem. D3-Hierarchy is intended for rooted trees and is listed without subflow-layout support. React Flow’s layouting guide

React Flow and Node-RED: different meanings, different constraints

Question React Flow Node-RED
What is nested? Nodes can have a spatial parent-child relationship; the child’s position is relative to its parent. React Flow Sub Flows A collection of nodes can be collapsed into a single workspace node and reused. Node-RED Subflows
Can connections cross the boundary? Connections between a subflow and an outer node are supported, though they can affect layout. React Flow Sub Flows A subflow has at most one input and may have multiple outputs. Node-RED Subflows
What is the primary purpose? Spatial organization and parent-child movement; grouping does not itself make a reusable logic abstraction. React Flow Sub Flows Visual simplification or packaging reusable logic into a node. Node-RED Subflows
What recursion rule applies? Not stated in the cited Sub Flows guide. A subflow cannot contain itself, directly or indirectly. Node-RED Subflows

Implementing parent-child groups in React Flow

  1. Assign the parent node an ID, then set the child node’s parentId to that ID. parentId is the current documented property; it replaced parentNode in version 11.11.0, and the documentation says the older property will be removed in version 12. React Flow’s Sub Flows guide

  2. Put each parent before its children in the nodes or defaultNodes array. The hierarchy depends on this ordering. React Flow’s Sub Flows guide

  3. Choose the boundary behavior deliberately. Use extent: 'parent' to keep a child inside its parent; consider expandParent if dragging a child to the edge should grow the container. React Flow’s Node API reference

  4. Check edge layering where parented nodes connect. Adjust zIndex if the default rendering order puts edges above nodes in a way that obscures the graph. React Flow’s Sub Flows guide

  5. Select a layout engine based on the graph’s actual needs, especially nested layout and edge routing. The documented capability table lists ELK for subflow layout and edge routing; validate the particular graph rather than treating a capability label as a guarantee against every edge case. React Flow’s layouting guide

A parent can be any React Flow node type. The group type is a convenience without handles. Node width and height are calculated internally; the API recommends styling nodes with style or className instead of setting those dimensions directly. Building a reusable subflow in Node-RED

  1. Select the nodes to package and use Selection to Subflow. If incoming wires feed multiple selected nodes, adjust the selection or connections first: the resulting subflow can have only one input. Node-RED’s Subflows guide

  2. Define the subflow’s inputs and outputs. It allows at most one input and can expose multiple outputs. Node-RED’s Subflows guide

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  3. Use the resulting subflow node from the palette where needed. For properties that differ by instance, expose per-instance values as environment variables inside the subflow. Node-RED’s Subflows guide

  4. Keep the containment graph acyclic: a subflow cannot contain itself either directly or through another subflow. Node-RED’s Subflows guide

Which approach fits the problem?

The recurring difficulty is not nesting alone; it is the mismatch between a visual container, a graph’s connectivity, and the behavior users expect from a reusable unit. Treat those as separate design requirements, and choose the editor feature and layout behavior that match each one.
