To turn off Gmail’s built-in smart features, open Gmail on a computer and go to Settings → See all settings → General, then switch off Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. That setting does not control every Gemini feature or saved Gemini conversation: Workspace smart features and Gemini Apps Activity have separate controls.
Turn off smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet
- Open Gmail on a computer.
- Click Settings, then See all settings.
- On the General tab, find Smart features.
- Turn off Smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet.
Google says this change applies across signed-in devices and apps. The setting removes documented features such as automatic email filtering and categorization, Smart Compose, Smart Reply, and summary cards; some smart features have individual controls and may remain available. There are also account-specific smart-feature controls in the Gmail app for Android and iOS. Update the app if a change notification does not appear; Google notes that some changes made on a computer may not be reflected in the mobile app.

If your goal is to disable Gemini experiences across Google Workspace, use the Workspace controls separately. In Gmail’s General settings, find Google Workspace smart features and select Manage Workspace smart feature settings. Review both Smart features in Google Workspace and Smart features in other Google products; these are independent of the Gmail, Chat, and Meet setting.

The Workspace control governs cross-Workspace experiences, including Gemini features in Google Workspace. Turning it off disables the documented experiences tied to that control. Google says Workspace Content and Activity will no longer be used to provide relevant smart features in the future or actively processed to improve them going forward. However, Google also notes that learnings developed from that improvement process may persist after the setting is turned off or Workspace Content & Activity is deleted. Stop saving Gemini Apps Activity to a personal Google Account
Gmail’s smart-feature switch does not manage Gemini conversation history. For a personal Google Account, open the Gemini web app and go to Menu → Settings & help → Activity, or visit the Gemini activity page in My Activity. Choose Turn off to stop keeping activity going forward, or Turn off and delete activity to remove existing saved activity as well. Follow Google’s instructions for managing Gemini Apps Activity.

Turning off activity does not mean every copy of every interaction is deleted immediately. Google says conversations may still be saved with the account for up to 72 hours to provide the service and process feedback. This is separate from disabling Gmail or Workspace smart features.
Work and school accounts and regional defaults
Gemini Apps Activity instructions above apply to personal accounts. For work or school accounts, the Workspace administrator controls activity settings; users may not be able to change retention settings or see the retention period. Google also says smart-feature settings are off by default for users in the European Economic Area, Japan, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom. Check the actual setting in your account rather than assuming its current state.
There is no single switch that turns off every Gemini-related feature across Gmail and a Google Account. Choose the control that matches your goal: Gmail/Chat/Meet smart features, Workspace smart features, smart features in other Google products, or saved Gemini Apps Activity. These settings address those named scopes; they do not promise to disable every Google AI feature.
