To turn off Find My iPhone, open Settings > [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone, switch off Find My iPhone, then enter your Apple Account password and confirm. Turning it off stops Find My from locating that iPhone and removes Activation Lock, so do this for a transfer or a service process that requires it—not for a phone that is lost or stolen.
Turn off Find My iPhone in Settings
-
Open Settings on the iPhone.
-
Tap [your name] > Find My > Find My iPhone.
-
Switch off Find My iPhone.
-

What changes when Find My is off?
The setting is not just a location-sharing switch. Turning off Find My stops that iPhone from being located through Find My and automatically removes Activation Lock. Apple says Activation Lock is enabled when Find My is set up, and Apple Account authentication is needed to turn Find My off, erase the device, or reactivate and use it. Apple explains Activation Lock.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple describes turning Find My off as an option when you no longer want to share your location or view the location of friends, devices, and items. Consider that privacy choice alongside the loss of device-location and Activation Lock protections.
When to turn it off
Before selling, giving away, or trading in an iPhone
Turn off Find My as part of preparing the iPhone for its next owner. Erasing the device also turns off Find My and Activation Lock, but you should follow Apple’s complete transfer steps so your personal data is erased and the device is ready to hand over. Follow Apple’s steps to prepare an iPhone for sale, trade-in, or gift.

Before service, if Apple’s process requires it
Some service preparation requires Find My to be disabled. Follow the current instructions for your iOS generation and the specific service, then turn Find My back on afterward if you disabled it for the appointment. Apple’s service-preparation guidance, dated September 16, 2026, sets out the applicable process. Check Apple’s service preparation guidance.
If the iPhone is already with its new owner
If you transferred the phone while Find My was still on, use Find My on another device or Find Devices on iCloud.com to erase it remotely, then remove it from your account to release Activation Lock for the new owner. If the iPhone is offline, the erase begins the next time it connects. Apple documents this as a way to resolve a device left attached to a former owner’s account—not as a way to remove a missing phone. See Apple’s steps for a device you no longer have.

When you should keep Find My on
If the iPhone is lost or stolen
Do not turn off Find My or remove the device from your account. Mark it as lost in Find My instead. Apple warns that removing a device—even after remotely erasing it—removes Activation Lock and can make it easier for someone else to unlock and resell. If you have an AppleCare+ Theft and Loss claim, Apple specifically says to keep the device attached to Find My and your Apple Account. Follow Apple’s lost-iPhone guidance.
For ordinary use and recovery
Leave Find My enabled if you want the ability to locate a missing iPhone and retain the Activation Lock protection tied to the feature. Disabling it sacrifices both benefits for that device.

If Stolen Device Protection prevents you from switching it off
Apple says Find My must remain on while Stolen Device Protection is enabled, so you cannot turn off Find My until you disable that protection. Apple also says Stolen Device Protection may impose a security delay when you turn it off away from familiar locations. If you are preparing for a sale, gift, or trade-in, allow time for that delay and turn off Stolen Device Protection as part of the preparation. Read Apple’s Stolen Device Protection instructions.
