Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download Mendeley Reference Manager from its official page for Windows, macOS, or 64-bit Linux. Mendeley also offers a browser-based Reference Manager. The free plan is limited: Mendeley’s pricing page lists 2 GB of storage and five Reading Assistant questions; check that page for current plan details.

Download and install the stable desktop app

  1. Open the official Mendeley Reference Manager download page.
  2. Select the download for your operating system: Windows, macOS, or Linux.
  3. Check that your system meets Mendeley’s listed minimum: Windows 10 or later, macOS 10.15 or later, or 64-bit Linux.
  4. Run the downloaded installer and follow its prompts. Once installed, open Reference Manager and sign in with your Mendeley credentials.

The stable app helps you build a reference library by importing and tagging papers, organize reading, and add comments, highlights, and annotations to PDFs, according to Mendeley’s product page.

Use Mendeley in a browser

Mendeley provides a Reference Manager Web product. Its web product page does not establish current browser requirements or a complete list of differences from the desktop app. If a particular feature or browser matters to you, verify it with Mendeley’s current product information before relying on it.

Know what “free” includes

Mendeley’s pricing page lists a free plan with 2 GB of storage and five Reading Assistant questions. These are plan allowances, not unlimited access to storage or every feature. The page also displays paid tiers, and plan details can change, so consult it for current terms.

Install Beta only if you want early access

Mendeley describes its Beta channel as early access, with new features and functionality arriving every two weeks ahead of stable releases. Beta is intended for users willing to try unfinished or changing features and provide feedback. Mendeley says Beta and stable Reference Manager cannot be installed at the same time. If you want the ordinary release, use the stable download page instead. See the official Beta page for channel details.

Move from Mendeley Desktop

If you already use Mendeley Desktop, Mendeley says to install Reference Manager and sign in with your Mendeley credentials; your existing library will automatically sync. Follow Mendeley’s Reference Manager guidance if you need help with the transition.

Add citations in Microsoft Word

Mendeley Cite is a separate Microsoft Word add-in, not the Reference Manager installer. Its official product page says it can insert individual or multiple references and create bibliographies from a Mendeley library. Mendeley lists Microsoft 365, Word 2016 and later, and Word for iPad as compatible. Check the product page for current compatibility details.

Accessibility information for the web product

Elsevier’s VPAT for Mendeley Reference Manager Web, dated March 1, 2024, assesses the web product against WCAG 2.1 A and AA and records partial or no support for some criteria, including meaningful sequence, keyboard operation, and certain contrast criteria. The document may not reflect changes made after its date; consult the VPAT for its scope and details.
