TurboTax vs TaxSlayer: Choose by Forms, Free-File Rules, and Final Cost

TurboTax vs TaxSlayer depends on your forms, eligibility for free filing, state-return needs, and the final price shown for your specific return.

For U.S. individual returns, TurboTax and TaxSlayer are best compared against your own forms and filing needs—not by a blanket claim that one is cheaper or easier. Check whether your return qualifies for either provider’s free product, whether you need state filing or extra support, and what each service shows as your final price before you submit.

Which service fits your tax return?

Start with the documents and forms your return requires. A simple Form 1040 may qualify for a provider’s free product, but itemized deductions, self-employment income, investments, rental income, or other schedules can change which product you need.

TurboTax Free Edition

TurboTax says its Free Edition is for qualifying simple Form 1040 returns. Its examples of included items include W-2 income, the standard deduction, specified credits, student-loan interest, and certain Schedule 1-A deductions. It lists itemized deductions, unemployment income, business or 1099-NEC income, stock or cryptocurrency sales, and rental income among situations that are not included. TurboTax says roughly 37% of taxpayers qualify; that is the company’s own eligibility claim, not an IRS estimate. Review its current eligibility details before starting: TurboTax Free Edition.

TaxSlayer Simply Free

TaxSlayer says Simply Free includes one federal return and is subject to age, income, credit, and deduction restrictions. The company says less than a majority of U.S. taxpayers may qualify. Check its current terms rather than assuming your return is eligible: TaxSlayer.

For either provider, match the current supported-form list to your tax documents before relying on a free tier. A product name or headline offer alone does not establish that it supports every form your return needs.

Check IRS Free File separately

IRS Free File is a separate program, not the same thing as either company’s branded free product. For the 2026 filing season, covering 2025 returns, the IRS says Guided Tax is available to taxpayers with 2025 adjusted gross income of $89,000 or less, subject to additional requirements set by each partner. TaxSlayer is one of the eight listed partners. Some partners include a free state return, but terms vary, so check the partner’s offer. The IRS says Free File bars upselling additional services.

Compare the full filing cost, not a starting price

The useful number is the checkout total for the same tax situation. Include federal and state filing, any product upgrade needed for your forms, optional support, and add-ons you choose. TaxSlayer says its prices can vary with tax situation, support needs, coupons, and promotions. TurboTax says online and mobile prices depend on tax situation, selected product, and filing date; most of its paid offerings let users prepare before paying.

Get a current quote from each provider using the same return details. TaxSlayer’s comparison page dates its competitor data to May 8, 2026 and warns it may be incomplete or out of date, so treat it as orientation rather than a live quote: TaxSlayer’s comparison page.

How to make the choice

  1. List your forms and income sources. Note whether you have only a straightforward Form 1040 or also itemized deductions, self-employment or 1099-NEC income, investments, rental income, or other schedules.
  2. Check each product’s current eligibility and supported forms. Do not assume the two branded free offers—or either offer and IRS Free File—use identical rules.
  3. Check IRS Free File if your 2025 AGI is within its threshold. The $89,000 limit applies to IRS Guided Tax for the 2026 filing season; individual partners can impose additional eligibility rules.
  4. Compare state filing and assistance needs. Confirm whether a state return is included or costs extra, and decide whether self-service or paid support matters to you.
  5. Compare final checkout totals. Use the same return details with both services and verify the displayed price, required upgrades, and optional add-ons before filing.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish

Official product and program information can help you check eligibility, forms, and stated pricing conditions. It does not establish that one provider is universally less expensive, easier to use, more accurate, or better at maximizing refunds. Those outcomes depend on the return and the service choices made during filing; verify the current terms directly with each provider.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
