An AI video prompt is only one part of a test case. To learn whether a wording change helped—or whether a model update changed the result—save the prompt with its model or service version, generation settings, source inputs, evaluation criteria and observed output. Then rerun the same cases after each meaningful change.
What a useful prompt test case records
A prompt saved by itself cannot explain what produced a video or whether a later result is better. AWS Prescriptive Guidance puts it plainly: “As central components of a generative AI system, prompts cannot be treated as simple text files that are unplanned and unmanaged.” Its prompt-lifecycle guide recommends versioning prompts, connecting versions to evaluation results, documenting changes and validating them in staging.

Use a record like this for each test case and prompt revision. This is a practical template, not a required industry standard.

| Output and observations | The generated media or a durable reference to it, human annotations, and notable successes or failures. |
| Change rationale | What changed and why, so a result can be connected to the edit that prompted it. |
AWS’s guidance supports version labels, rationale, expected output format, evaluation metrics and links between versions and results. OpenAI’s evaluated-datasets guide describes prompt variables, datasets, annotations, graders and comparisons between prompt variants.

Build a repeatable comparison
- Define the result. State what the video should do or show, then choose criteria that a reviewer can actually assess. A brief such as “make a cinematic street scene” is hard to score; criteria might specify whether the subject remains recognizable, the requested action occurs, and the camera movement follows the brief.
- Save a baseline and test set. Preserve the current prompt and a small set of representative cases. Include difficult edge cases, not just prompts likely to succeed. Record the inputs for each case.
- Capture the generation context. Record the provider and model or access date, relevant settings, and seed where available. These details help distinguish a prompt effect from a change in the generation setup.
- Change one meaningful thing at a time. Keep the test cases and settings steady where possible, edit the prompt, and rerun the same cases. If you change the model or a control too, record that as a separate change rather than attributing the outcome solely to wording.
- Review against the criteria. Save scores or pass/fail results and annotate subjective issues, such as an action happening too late or a subject drifting across frames. Add important failures to the test set so they are checked in future revisions.
- Promote only after review. Validate a passing version in a staging or review workflow before using it more broadly. Retain its results and the prior version so you can compare or roll back.
Choose criteria that expose video-specific failures
A practical comparison rubric—rather than a published cross-provider benchmark—is to review the same cases for:
- Adherence to the brief: Are the requested subjects, actions and scene details present?
- Visual and temporal quality: Does the video remain coherent across frames, and does the action unfold as requested?
- Repeatability: Where controls permit, do repeated generations behave consistently enough for the intended use?
- Failure patterns: What recurring errors should become regression cases?
- Operational cost and latency: If measured, do those trade-offs matter for the workflow?
Video evaluation can consider both prompts and generated media. OpenAI’s Sora System Card describes a safety evaluation framework combining model input prompts with input and output classifiers. That is an example of safety evaluation design, not a general measure of creative quality.

Keep provider-specific rules attached to the test
Amazon Nova Reel prompt length
Amazon Nova Reel’s prompting documentation says prompts are generally limited to 512 characters, with up to 4,000 characters allowed for a single prompt used to generate videos longer than six seconds. These are Nova Reel-specific limits, not universal rules for AI video models.

For Nova Reel, AWS recommends keeping the seed consistent while making small prompt changes, then varying seeds after the prompt is refined. Its guidance also warns that negation can lead to the opposite result. Treat both as provider-specific advice, not guarantees or universal prompt-writing rules. A consistent seed does not establish that outputs will be identical across runs, model updates or services; record the controls and check the provider’s current documentation.

Maintain the test set as the system changes
A test set loses value if it only reflects the cases that worked at the start. Add newly discovered edge cases and blind spots as they arise. OpenAI’s evaluated-datasets guide describes expanding datasets, annotating examples, using graders and comparing prompt variants—useful practices for keeping evaluation connected to real failures rather than relying on a single showcase generation.
OpenAI’s Sora System Card reports that external red-teamers in nine countries tested multiple iterations of Sora safety mitigations and conducted more than 15,000 generations between September and December 2024. That figure describes safety red-team activity, not a prompt-quality benchmark or evidence that versioning produces a quantified improvement.

The same OpenAI guide currently states that the Evals platform will become read-only on October 31, 2026 and is scheduled to shut down on November 30, 2026. Those dates concern that platform, not the broader practice of keeping datasets and comparing prompt variants; check OpenAI’s documentation for current status before relying on the timeline.
