The U.S. Space Force has retired its Defense Support Program (DSP) missile-warning constellation after its last two satellites took part in a September 2026 on-orbit exercise. Their retirement does not end U.S. space-based missile warning: DSP’s follow-on system, SBIRS, is already on orbit, while Next-Gen OPIR is being developed to replace aging SBIRS satellites.
What happened to the final DSP satellites?
The final two DSP spacecraft participated in U.S. Space Command’s Apollo Maneuvers 2026, then were moved to supersynchronous, or “graveyard,” orbit and decommissioned. Space Force Combat Forces Command reported the retirement on October 1, 2026, according to Air & Space Forces Magazine.

U.S. Space Command says Apollo Maneuvers took place during the first week of September 2026. It was the command’s inaugural live-fly exercise for dynamic on-orbit operations, coordinating maneuvers across low Earth, medium Earth and geosynchronous orbits to refine maneuver-warfare concepts. The exercise’s timing and purpose are described in U.S. Space Command’s announcement.
The publicly accessible reporting does not identify the two satellites by name or catalog number, so those details are not established here.

Why was DSP important?
DSP used infrared sensors in geosynchronous orbit to detect missile launches. The program began during the Cold War as a means of warning about ballistic missile attacks. Its warning role later extended to theater missile launches: DSP detected such launches during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, according to the historical account in Air & Space Forces Magazine’s October 1, 2026 report. DSP sensors also detected natural events, including forest fires and volcanic eruptions.
- 1970: The U.S. military’s first DSP satellite launch, as reported by Air & Space Forces Magazine in 2026.
- 23 satellites: The constellation’s eventual total, as reported by the magazine. This is not a count of spacecraft operating simultaneously.
- 2007: The launch year of the last DSP satellite, according to the same report.
Col. Brandon Davenport, commander of Mission Delta 4, called the final spacecraft “the culminating end to over a half-century of space-based early warning.” He also said DSP “ensured deterrence during the Cold War and protected our deployed warfighters from the Gulf War until their retirement last month,” as quoted in the October 1, 2026 report.

Does DSP’s retirement leave the U.S. without satellite missile warning?
No. DSP is retired, but Space-Based Infrared System (SBIRS), its follow-on capability, is already on orbit. Space Force reporting describes SBIRS as a broader system incorporating geosynchronous satellites, hosted sensors in highly elliptical orbit and ground systems. DSP’s retirement marks the end of the legacy constellation, not the end of space-based warning.

How do SBIRS and Next-Gen OPIR fit into the transition?
| System | Role in the transition | Status described in the sources | Architecture or intended mission |
|---|---|---|---|
| DSP | Legacy system being retired | The final two spacecraft were decommissioned after the September 2026 exercise. | Infrared missile-launch warning from geosynchronous orbit; sensors also detected some natural events. |
| SBIRS | DSP’s follow-on capability | Already on orbit. | Space Force reporting describes geosynchronous satellites, hosted highly elliptical orbit sensors and ground systems. |
| Next-Gen OPIR | Planned successor to aging SBIRS satellites | In development; Space Systems Command identifies improved resilience against threats as an objective. | Intended to replace aging SBIRS satellites. A wider warning architecture is also planned across multiple orbits. |
Space Systems Command’s Next-Gen OPIR program page describes the system’s intended role in replacing SBIRS. The broader architecture described in the October 2026 reporting includes planned medium-Earth-orbit and low-Earth-orbit capabilities alongside existing systems.

What remains uncertain about the next generation?
The FY2027 budget status of planned Next-Gen OPIR polar satellites was unresolved in the October 1, 2026 report. It said the Space Force proposed canceling the effort while lawmakers supported maintaining it in draft legislation. That account does not establish a final outcome; the proposal and draft legislation should not be treated as settled policy.
Lt. Col. Ann Hughes, commander of the 2nd Space Warning Squadron, said retiring DSP “allows us to best posture for the future.” She described the goal as providing “a reliable, consistent, and seamless picture of missile threats regardless of the operational environment,” according to Air & Space Forces Magazine.
