Transmog and glamour systems let you change the appearance of gear without changing the equipped item’s gameplay function or stats—but there is no single standard for how they work. Final Fantasy XIV applies a glamour to an item, Guild Wars 2 combines an account-wide skin wardrobe with character-based Fashion Templates, and Blizzard has announced World of Warcraft outfit slots designed to preserve and switch saved looks. Collection scope, changing costs, restrictions, and outfit swapping differ by game.
What do transmog and glamour mean?
“Transmog” and “glamour” are game-specific names for cosmetic gear customization. In general, they describe making equipped gear look different while retaining the selected equipment’s gameplay function or stats. The terms do not guarantee the same collection rules, application process, or costs from one MMO to another.

A useful comparison separates four questions: where appearances are collected, how a look is applied, what it costs to change or reuse that look, and whether complete outfits can be saved or switched. Unlocking an appearance and applying it are also distinct actions; the available documentation does not establish the unlock requirements for every appearance in these games.

How glamour works in Final Fantasy XIV
Project one item’s appearance onto another
Final Fantasy XIV’s official UI guide describes glamour as projecting the image of one item onto another with a Glamour Prism and the Cast Glamour action. It is an item-level application workflow: the guide explains how to cast an appearance, rather than describing a complete outfit slot system.

Unlock and use the action
The feature unlocks after the level 15 quest “If I Had a Glamour.” Once available, Cast Glamour can be opened from Actions & Traits, an item’s subcommands, or the glamour dresser in an inn room. A glamour can still be subject to character-specific appearance requirements: the guide notes that race-, gender-, or Grand Company-specific glamour will not display if the character does not meet the relevant requirement.
The cited UI guide explains the casting workflow and those display limitations, but does not establish account-wide appearance collection rules or current glamour-plate capacity. Those details should not be inferred from its instructions.

How the Wardrobe and Fashion Templates work in Guild Wars 2
Account-wide skins, saved character looks
ArenaNet’s 2014 Wardrobe announcement describes an account-wide wardrobe: armor and weapon skins unlocked on one character become part of the account’s collection. It also describes previewing skins and applying an appearance without losing the selected equipment’s stats. The original system used Transmutation Charges to apply skins.

Fashion Templates add a saved-loadout layer. Under ArenaNet’s documentation for the February 3, 2026 patch, a template can contain armor, weapon, and backpack skins plus selected dyes, and templates can be shared. Each character begins with two tabs. Players can purchase up to seven additional tabs per character in the in-game Gem Store, reaching nine total.

Changing a template is not the same as applying one
The key cost distinction is between editing what a template contains and using a saved template. Saving changed skins costs one Transmutation Charge for each changed item. Dye changes are free. Applying an already saved template to equipment is also free. The documentation additionally describes an option to automatically reapply the last selected template when equipment changes.
What Blizzard has announced for World of Warcraft
Blizzard’s announcement for the updated transmogrification system describes Outfit Slots that save appearances, so players do not have to reapply a look whenever they receive new gear, and that can switch outfits automatically for different situations. This is a description of announced features, not confirmation here that the overhaul is live. The accessible details do not establish its costs, collection scope, or restrictions, so those should not be assumed.

Which MMO has the best appearance customization?
There is no evidence-based universal winner from these mechanics alone: “best” depends on whether you value a broad shared collection, straightforward item-by-item application, or saved outfits that can be switched with less repeated work. The documented distinctions are more useful than treating transmog and glamour as interchangeable labels.
- For a clearly documented account-wide skin collection: Guild Wars 2’s Wardrobe announcement explicitly describes armor and weapon skins unlocked across characters on one account.
- For a clearly described item-level casting workflow: Final Fantasy XIV’s guide gives the unlock quest, access paths to Cast Glamour, and appearance requirements, but does not establish collection scope or plate capacity.
- For announced saved outfit slots: Blizzard describes Outfit Slots and automatic switching for World of Warcraft, but the available announcement details do not verify live availability or costs.
- For separating customization cost from reuse: Guild Wars 2’s documented Fashion Templates distinguish the charge for saving changed skins from free dye changes and free application of an already saved template.
Before choosing a game on fashion features alone, check the current in-game implementation and the restrictions that matter to your characters. In the documented comparison, collection breadth, saved-outfit convenience, and the cost of changing a look are separate design choices rather than one overall score.
