Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThere is no reliable one-for-one translation for every JAWS keyboard command. To find the right NVDA gesture, start with the task you want to perform, check the NVDA desktop or laptop layout you use, and verify the command in the screen reader’s built-in help or current official documentation.
How do I find the NVDA equivalent of a JAWS command?
First identify the task—such as reading continuously, checking focus, or navigating a web page—rather than substituting keys by name. The two screen readers can differ in command scope, speech behavior, and how a command behaves in a particular application. Official references support task-by-task checking, not the assumption that every JAWS gesture has an identical NVDA counterpart.

- Check the JAWS gesture. Use the JAWS Keyboard Help or the official JAWS hotkey reference. Freedom Scientific also lists JAWS Command Search as a way to find commands.
- Check the NVDA layout. NVDA has separate desktop and laptop keyboard layouts; a command may differ between them. Confirm the selected layout and the configured NVDA modifier before trying a gesture.
- Verify it in NVDA Input Help. Press NVDA+1 to turn Input Help on, then press the key or combination you want to identify. NVDA reports the gesture and any associated command without executing it. Press NVDA+1 again to turn Input Help off.
- Test in the relevant context. A gesture used while browsing a web page may not behave the same way in an editable field or another application. Check the result where you intend to use the command.
What counts as the NVDA key?
“NVDA key” means the modifier assigned in NVDA, not one fixed physical key. NV Access documents Insert or Numpad 0 as defaults; Caps Lock can also be selected as the modifier. The Num Lock state matters when using Numpad 0. NVDA’s official user guide explains modifier choices and command layouts.
In the table below, NVDA gestures are shown with the NVDA key as a placeholder for your configured modifier. The NVDA examples use the documented desktop and laptop layouts. JAWS gestures are listed as given by Freedom Scientific’s hotkey reference; confirm they apply to your active JAWS version and keyboard scheme.

Reading text: what should I check?
For a reading task, match the outcome you need—such as reading the current line or reading continuously—to the command documented for your screen reader. Do not infer an NVDA command from a JAWS key combination. The verified NVDA example below illustrates why the selected layout must be stated.
| Task or reference | JAWS gesture | NVDA gesture | Context and verification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Read continuously (Say All) | Not stated in the cited JAWS hotkey reference; check the current JAWS command reference or Keyboard Help. | Desktop: NVDA+Down Arrow Laptop: NVDA+A |
NVDA layouts differ. Confirm the command in Input Help or the current NVDA guide. |
| Read the current line | Not established by the cited JAWS hotkey entries. | Not established by the cited NVDA examples. | Check both products’ current command references; do not guess a pairing. |
| Word in Context | Insert+C or Caps Lock+C, as listed by Freedom Scientific | Not established by the cited NVDA references. | This is a JAWS-specific entry, not an asserted NVDA equivalent. Confirm the JAWS version and active scheme. |
Checking focus and finding controls
Focus is the item currently receiving keyboard input, such as a button, link, or text field. When moving to NVDA, verify the command for the specific focus or control task you need. The cited references do not establish a complete set of JAWS-to-NVDA pairings for inspecting focus or finding controls, so use each product’s help rather than assuming familiar keys do the same thing.

- Braille Keyboard Stickers for the Blind and Visually Impaired by DataCal.
- Transparent Braille stickers are a very economical option for creating a bilingual Braille keyboard.
- The stickers use an easy peel-and-stick method to install.
- The Braille stickers are printed on clear Lexan so the original key legend shows through; this allows you to add Braille stickers to your existing keyboard so that it becomes a bilingual keyboard (Braille) and the original language of your keyboard.
- In NVDA, use Input Help (NVDA+1) to identify a candidate gesture without triggering it.
- In JAWS, Freedom Scientific lists Keyboard Help as Insert+1 or Caps Lock+1 and lists JAWS Command Search as Insert+Space followed by J. Verify these entries against your release and active keyboard scheme.
- After identifying a command, try it in the application and control where you expect to use it; the same gesture can have different implications across contexts.
Handling web content: browse mode and focus mode
NVDA uses browse and focus modes to handle web content and interactive controls. Browse mode supports reading and navigating page content; focus mode passes keystrokes through to an interactive control. NVDA’s official Commands Quick Reference documents NVDA+Space to toggle between these modes and Escape to leave focus mode.

These mode commands help explain why a key can behave differently on a page and inside an editable control. They are useful context, not a complete description of every browser or application: check the mode and the control you are using when a familiar key does not produce the expected result.
