What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Windows has two different features people may mean by “Start folders”: folders that group app pins, and shortcuts to personal folders such as Documents beside the Start menu’s Power button. Use the first to organize apps; use the second for quick access to files. Neither feature moves or reorganizes files on your PC.
Choose which kind of Start folder you want
| Feature | What it does | Where it appears |
|---|---|---|
| Pinned-item folder | Groups pinned apps together. | In the Start menu’s Pins area. |
| Folder shortcut | Opens a location such as Documents or Downloads. | Beside the Power button in the Start menu’s account area. |
These features are set up separately. The pinned-item folder is created by arranging pins; folder shortcuts are enabled in Start settings. Microsoft’s Start menu guide documents both.

Create or edit a folder of pinned apps
These steps apply to pinned items in Windows 11 Start.

- Open Start and find the pinned apps you want to group.
- Drag one pinned item onto another. Windows creates a folder.
- Open the folder and rename it if you want. Drag other pinned items into it to add them.
- To remove an app from the folder, open it and drag the pin back out.
Microsoft says the folder disappears when only one pinned item remains. This changes the arrangement of Start pins; it does not move or alter the apps’ files.

Show folder shortcuts beside Power
Windows 11
- Open Start and open Start settings.
- Select Folders.
- Turn on the shortcuts you want to appear beside the Power button.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Personalization > Start.
- Select Choose which folders appear on Start.
- Switch on the folders you want beside the Power button.
Microsoft lists Documents, Downloads, Music, Pictures, Videos, Network, and Personal folder as examples. The choices available can vary by Windows version. Selecting a shortcut provides access to a folder; it does not move files into that folder.
Keep Start layout controls separate from folder shortcuts
Windows 11 Start also has Pins, All, Recommendations, Account, and mobile-companion areas. The All apps view can use Grid, Category, or List layouts. These are separate Start layout features, not ways to enable account-area folder shortcuts.

Windows can also personalize Start based on apps you launch. That behavior uses a separate app-launch tracking setting: in Windows 11, look under Settings > Privacy & security > General; in Windows 10, look under Settings > Privacy > General. It is not the procedure for creating pinned folders or showing folder shortcuts. See Microsoft’s general privacy settings guide.

Microsoft states that free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, and security fixes for Windows 10 ended after October 14, 2025. Windows 10 PCs will still work, but Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. The Start settings steps above describe the Windows 10 interface; they do not change the operating system’s support status.
