Neither is universally worse. Chromatic aberration adds colored fringes to image details; dirt and blood effects can cover parts of the screen, and blood may also tell you that your character has taken damage. Which one bothers you more depends on its intensity and frequency, what information it obscures, and whether the game lets you change it.
What each effect does
Chromatic aberration
Chromatic aberration imitates a flaw of real camera lenses: colors separate at image edges, creating colored fringes around details. Epic’s Unreal Editor for Fortnite documentation describes controls for its intensity and start offset. In a game, the result is a deliberate lens-like look, not a blood or dirt overlay.

Dirt and blood overlays
Epic describes a dirt mask as a camera filter that creates a dust-like film, with controls for its texture, intensity, and tint. Blood effects are different: splashes or a red tint can indicate that the character has been injured. Academic work on game damage indicators describes a trade-off: such effects can obstruct vision while conveying injury information, and some indicators can communicate where damage came from.
Which effect is more intrusive?
| Effect | What it adds | What may make it distracting | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromatic aberration | A simulated lens look with colored fringes around image details. | The fringing may make the image feel less clean or make useful details harder to read. | Whether the game offers a separate toggle or intensity setting. |
| Dirt | A dust-like film over the view. | The mask can cover or muddy parts of the scene; its impact depends on how it is authored and how intense it is. | Whether dirt has its own control and whether reducing its intensity helps. |
| Blood or damage effects | A visual indication that the character has been injured; some indicators may also convey damage direction or location. | A splash or tint can obscure the action, linger on screen, or be unwelcome imagery. | Whether blood, gore, damage vignettes, or other fullscreen effects can be adjusted independently. |
This is a practical comparison, not a controlled head-to-head test. The cited sources document what the effects do and show examples of game settings; they do not establish a universal ranking or quantify a gameplay-performance penalty.

How to decide which one to turn down
- If color fringes distract you: try disabling chromatic aberration or lowering its intensity, if the game offers that control.
- If overlays hide useful information: check for separate dirt, blood, gore, damage-vignette, or fullscreen-effects settings rather than assuming one option controls them all.
- If blood feedback helps you understand damage: consider whether a less intrusive setting preserves useful feedback without covering as much of the view.
- If an effect bothers you in particular scenes: compare the settings in those scenes. Intensity, duration, and frequency can make a larger difference than the effect’s name.
Controls vary by game, platform, and update. For example, Insomniac’s Marvel’s Wolverine accessibility guide lists chromatic aberration, fullscreen effects (including damage vignettes), and dynamic blood as separate options. That example is a reason to inspect the individual settings menu, not to assume another game uses the same labels or provides the same choices.
Comfort and accessibility
Microsoft’s Xbox Accessibility Guideline 117 explains that screen and camera movement can create barriers, including motion sickness for some players, and recommends customizable camera and screen-related settings. This is general guidance about movement and visual distraction; it does not show that chromatic aberration or blood overlays cause motion sickness in every player.

The DOOM: The Dark Ages accessibility guide says chromatic aberration can be disabled and that doing so may help players sensitive to the effect. A Chalmers University thesis on accessibility for shooter games recommends options such as limiting or disabling moving or flashing effects and disabling blood and gore. These examples support giving players control; they do not mean every player will react the same way.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesVerdict: judge the effect in the game you play
Chromatic aberration is more likely to be the worse choice for someone who dislikes lens-like color fringing. Blood or dirt is more likely to be worse for someone who needs an unobstructed view or prefers less blood imagery. The useful test is whether an effect makes important scene details harder to read, whether its gameplay information is worth the obstruction, how often it appears, and whether you can adjust it. PC Gamer’s September 23, 2026 poll invitation poses the matchup but is not a controlled comparison, so it cannot settle the question for every player or game.
