Yes, you can transfer photos from an iPhone without a SIM card. A SIM only provides cellular service, and your photos are stored on the phone. AirDrop over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, a cable to a computer, and compatible external storage all work with no cellular service. iCloud also works, but it needs an internet connection, which Wi-Fi can provide. The main exception is a phone that hasn’t finished setup or activation. That phone may need a Wi-Fi connection before you can reach Photos.
First check: can you get to your photos?
Every method below assumes the iPhone is set up and unlocks to the Home Screen, where you can open Photos. If it is stuck on a setup or activation screen, Apple lists Wi-Fi as one of the internet options during iPhone setup. Apple’s setup guide says you can set up a new iPhone “with an internet connection.” Join a Wi-Fi network on that screen and continue.

This guide can’t promise a workaround for every phone. A phone that is passcode-locked, physically damaged, or restricted by a carrier may behave differently and may need situation-specific help from Apple or the carrier.
Which route should you choose?
Choose by destination, the number of photos, and whether you have internet access.

| Route | Best for | Requirements and limits |
|---|---|---|
| AirDrop | A nearby iPhone, iPad, or Mac | Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on for both devices; within 30 feet (10 meters), per Apple; the recipient accepts the transfer. |
| Cable to a computer | Copying batches to a Mac or Windows PC | A data-capable cable that fits both ends; Apple’s supported software depends on your computer (Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes on older systems). |
| External storage | A local backup copy with no cloud | A compatible drive, adapter, and file system; this varies by iPhone and connector. |
| iCloud | Ongoing sync across devices on the same Apple Account | Internet access (Wi-Fi is fine); uses iCloud storage; syncing can take time. |
| Mail or Messages | A few photos | Internet access and attachment limits; poor for a large library. |
Method 1: AirDrop to a nearby Apple device
Apple describes AirDrop as “a wireless file-sharing feature that allows you to easily and securely transfer files between Apple devices.” It is the quickest no-cable option, and it needs no SIM.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth on both devices. They don’t need to be connected to a network, but both radios must be on.
- Set the receiving device to accept AirDrop from the sender (for example, from Contacts or Everyone for 10 Minutes).
- On the iPhone, open Photos and tap Select. Choose the photos.
- Tap the Share button, then AirDrop.
- Tap the recipient’s name. The recipient taps Accept.
Keep the devices within 30 feet (10 meters), the limit Apple documents. AirDrop is mainly a local transfer. Apple notes that in some cases a transfer can continue over the internet if the devices move out of proximity and aren’t on the same Wi-Fi network. Don’t treat it as a purely offline channel in that situation.

Method 2: Cable to a Mac or Windows PC
A cable suits large batches, and it works if the recipient has no Apple device. Apple’s supported workflow depends on your computer:
Outdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchPC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Mac: use Finder on supported macOS versions.
- Windows: use the Apple Devices app on supported versions.
- Older systems: use iTunes where Apple specifies it.
Use a cable that carries data, not a charge-only cable. Check the connector on both ends, because the iPhone port and your computer’s port may not match, and no single cable fits every setup. Connect the iPhone and unlock it. If it asks whether to trust the computer, tap Trust and enter your passcode. Then copy or import the photos with the tool for your computer.

Method 3: External storage
If you want a local copy without a computer or the cloud, copying to external storage is an option. Whether it works depends on your iPhone’s connector, the adapter or drive, and the drive’s file format, so confirm compatibility before you buy anything. Apple’s overview supports transferring to storage, but it doesn’t settle every model-specific question about moving files back into the Photos library. Copying photos to a drive gives you an archive. It doesn’t automatically make them appear in another phone’s Photos app.
Method 4: iCloud over Wi-Fi
iCloud Photos stores and syncs your library across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. It is not SIM-dependent and not offline. Both the iPhone and the receiving device need internet access, and the first upload of a large library can take a long time. It also uses iCloud storage, which may mean paying for more than the free allowance. It fits best when you want continuing sync rather than a one-time copy.

Troubleshooting
- AirDrop doesn’t show the recipient: confirm Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices, move closer than 30 feet, unlock both screens, and check the receiver’s AirDrop setting.
- The computer doesn’t see the iPhone: try a different data-capable cable or port, unlock the phone, and tap Trust when prompted.
- The iPhone is stuck on setup screens: connect to Wi-Fi so activation can proceed.
- iCloud photos haven’t appeared: check that both devices use the same Apple Account, have internet access, and have enough iCloud storage. Large libraries sync gradually.
