You don’t need an Xfinity TV Box. The catch is compatibility: Xfinity says support starts with 2018 models, and some sets have model or software conditions. Check your model first.
Check that your Samsung TV is supported
Xfinity’s activation guide says the app is available on Samsung Smart TVs “2018 to current.” Its requirements page adds qualifications:

- For 2020 Samsung TVs, support applies to QLED and UHD models.
- Certain 2018 models need specific software versions.
- The TV must be online, and Xfinity TV and Internet service must already be installed on your account.
Xfinity also says content and features vary by service and location. Nothing in its instructions promises that every Samsung model or region will show the app.

- Make sure the TV is connected to the internet.
- Press the Smart Hub button on the Smart Control remote.
- Select Settings, then Support.
- Open About this TV. The screen shows the model code and software version.
Compare both against the current Samsung list on Xfinity’s requirements page. If the TV is an older 2018 model, the software version matters most.

Install and activate Xfinity Stream
- Connect the Samsung TV to your home network.
- Press the Smart Hub button to open the Home screen.
- Choose Apps.
- Select the magnifying-glass search icon and search for Xfinity Stream.
- Select the app and choose Download.
- When installation finishes, choose Open.
- When prompted, register the TV by signing in with your Xfinity ID and password.
If the app doesn’t appear in the Apps store
Check the model code and software version against Xfinity’s list first. Xfinity limits availability to compatible models, so a search that returns nothing usually means the set isn’t eligible or needs a newer software version. Confirm the TV is actually online, too, since the store can’t load without a connection.
What you can watch
The app’s main menu has Live TV, Saved, Browse, Search and Settings. Xfinity’s partner-device FAQ says the app can offer live broadcast channels, linear cable channels, cloud recordings and Video On Demand. What you actually see depends on your subscription and location.

Xfinity also cautions: “Not all features of X1 are available if you choose to use a partner device.” Samsung TVs count as partner devices, so expect some differences from an X1 box.
4K playback conditions
Xfinity says 4K on Samsung TVs needs Xfinity Stream app version 2.2.5 or later. Its requirements page also says the app needs more than 2 GB of available memory to deliver high video quality effectively. These are quality conditions. They don’t stop you from installing the app.

If your Samsung TV isn’t supported
Xfinity lists Amazon Fire TV among compatible Xfinity Stream platforms. A Fire TV device plugged into the Samsung’s HDMI port is a possible workaround. Check Xfinity’s current device requirements before buying a specific model. If your Samsung is compatible and the app is available, you don’t need an extra device.

- Is your exact TV model supported?
- Does the app appear in the TV’s Apps store?
- Does the platform meet the version requirements for any 4K playback you want?
- Does it offer the Xfinity features you need, given that partner devices lack some X1 features?
