Museum Website Design Inspiration: What Real Museum Sites and Concepts Teach Us

A good museum website does two jobs at once. It is a front door that gets someone to hours, tickets and directions in seconds, and it is a place to wander through collections and stories. Design inspiration galleries tend to show only the second job. This guide uses a 25-example inspiration list, two official museum statements and sector guidance to show what to copy, what to question, and what to check before you call any design “good.”

A note on “25 inspiring designs”

Subframe’s inspiration post (by Irvin Zhan, February 12, 2025) collects 25 museum website designs. Many entries are Dribbble presentations, such as a Moesgaard Museum concept, a Messner Mountain Museum event page and a Van Gogh Museum concept. The post does not establish that all 25 are live sites, or that their features were tested with visitors. A concept can be beautiful and still fail a visitor who needs opening times on a phone.

So this article does not rank 25 sites. It treats concepts as concepts and draws its lessons from two documented, real museum sites and from sector guidance. That is a smaller set, but each claim in it has a source.

What a museum website actually has to do

The Museums Association (Alex Stevens, November 16, 2018) describes how unusual the brief is: visitor information, ticketing, donations, shops, collection research, education, blogs and project work, all on one site. Chris Unitt, founder of One Further, put it this way: “Museums are fascinating from a digital point of view because their websites have just about every business model going. That is why they’re gnarly and complicated and everyone pulls their hair out over how to design museum websites effectively.”

The Rijksmuseum names two major purposes for its own site: preparing a visit and buying tickets, and exploring the online collection and stories. Grant Bird of Black Country Living Museum calls the website “the key channel for connecting with our audiences – both as an information resource and an e-commerce platform.” A design that serves only one of these jobs is unfinished.

A framework for judging any museum site

Axis Question to ask
Task clarity Can a first-time visitor find hours, tickets, directions, events and access information quickly?
Collection interpretation Do striking images lead to usable object information and stories, or are they decoration?
Accessibility Are keyboard use, screen readers, contrast, captions, alt text, motion controls and documents handled?
Audience pathways Are resources organized for families, educators, students, researchers and other groups?
Mobile and speed Does it work well on a phone and load quickly? Judge this by hands-on review; no comparable performance data exists for these examples.

Case study: Rijksmuseum and documented accessibility

The Rijksmuseum’s accessibility statement, prepared June 17, 2025, says: “We want as many people as possible to use the Rijksmuseum website and aim for accessibility according to WCAG 2.2, Level AA guidelines.”

What makes it instructive is its candor. A sample of representative pages was tested in March 2025 by Proper Access against WCAG 2.2 AA, and the museum reports that 24 of 55 success criteria were met. It lists the remaining problems:

Nifeliz Museum of Nature and Science Building Set, NF10286
  • Dive into the joy of building and admire the intricate details of this nature and science museum building set. Bring the museum’s charm into your daily life.
  • Recreate a lifelike museum with five themed sections: Gems & Minerals, Geography & Geology, Space Exhibition, Gift Shop, and Dinosaurs. Each detail captures the spirit of a real museum.
  • Use the glass elevator to access this nature and science museum’s interior. The five themed sections can be pulled out like drawers, letting you showcase each one individually.
  • Suitable for home or office, this museum model set combines elegant design with interactive fun, letting you experience the museum’s charm every day.
  • Ideal for museum enthusiasts and families, this set offers a creative building experience that’s both fun and meaningful to share. This product is designed for users aged 16 and above.
  • insufficient contrast on some images and button text;
  • problems reaching the menu;
  • videos that play automatically;
  • an image carousel that cannot be stopped;
  • keyboard focus that escapes the cookie banner;
  • images without descriptive text;
  • inaccessible PDFs.

The statement says improvements were underway, with further optimization planned for 2026. The lesson is not that the site is a model of conformance, because by its own account it is not. The lesson is the practice: test real pages, name specific failures, date the results and publish a plan. Several of those failures (autoplay, carousels, contrast) are exactly the features that make inspiration galleries look good.

Case study: The Walters Art Museum redesign

The Walters announced its redesigned site on June 23, 2026, after a June 22 launch. The museum says the site helps visitors plan a visit, explore exhibitions, discover programs and events, and donate. It said the design and content “mirror the needs of the Walters’ expansive community.”

  • Related content: exhibition and event pages connect related listings, image galleries and collection modules, so one page leads naturally to another.
  • Audience-specific resources: content is organized by who is looking for it.
  • Open collection: users can explore more than 36,000 objects and download public-domain images free of charge.
  • Access work: the museum describes changes for legibility and contrast, screen-reader use and keyboard navigation.

All of this is the museum’s own description. The announcement is not an independent usability or accessibility audit, so read it as intent and structure, and test the live site yourself. The museum credits Linked by Air as design and development partner, with project support from Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Digital Accelerator for Arts and Culture.

Lessons from sector guidance

The Museums Association piece is from 2018, so treat it as durable qualitative advice rather than current benchmarks. Its main points:

  • Give visitors a clear journey, with prominent links to the most popular pages and deep links to relevant material.
  • Keep messages clear and the site flexible and mobile-friendly.
  • Keep content fresh, use strong visuals and write economically.
  • Use analytics and user testing instead of relying on taste.

The Subframe post gives similar advice: clear navigation for exhibitions, events and ticketing; high-quality imagery; responsive design; interactive elements such as virtual tours and maps; and easy-to-find hours, location and contact details. Interactive features are the riskiest of these. A virtual tour or map that cannot be used by keyboard or screen reader excludes visitors, so it should be built with the Rijksmuseum’s list of failures in mind.

A caution about attendance claims

The Museums Association article quotes a Royal Air Force Museum representative attributing doubled visitor numbers over six months to a move from above-the-line advertising to an integrated digital campaign promoting the website. That is an institution’s attribution, not a controlled study, and it concerns a marketing campaign, not visual design. No evidence reviewed shows that any particular design pattern raises attendance, ticket conversion or engagement.

How to apply this to your own museum site

  1. List the visitor tasks: plan, buy, explore, learn, research, donate. Rank them by how often people do them, using your analytics.
  2. Put hours, tickets and access information within one click of the home page on mobile.
  3. Link every striking collection image to object details and a story.
  4. Create entry points for each audience you serve, such as educators or families.
  5. Give users control of motion: no autoplay without a way to stop, and carousels with working pause controls.
  6. Check contrast, keyboard focus (including cookie banners), alt text and PDFs, then test against WCAG 2.2 AA on a representative page sample.
  7. Publish your accessibility results with dates and known issues, as the Rijksmuseum does.
  8. Run user tests with real visitors before and after launch.
