In one author-reported test on Traefik 3.6.25, 500 requests that spoofed X-Role: admin from 50 concurrent workers produced zero reported hits on the admin service; all 500 went to a catchall service. The result suggests that, in that setup, a child router did not match requests that skipped its parent route. It is a single test—not proof that Traefik blocks every header-spoofing attack or that every authentication configuration is safe.
What the 500-request test found
Alex Georgiev says he ran Traefik 3.6.25 in Docker with a File-provider configuration. A parent router matched PathPrefix(`/api`) and applied middleware that set X-Role: admin. A child router matched HeaderRegexp(`X-Role`, `^admin$`) and referenced the parent with parentRefs. A lower-priority catchall route handled requests that did not match the child.

Requests passing through the /api parent could reach the child after the middleware set the header. Requests sent to paths outside /api while already carrying the same spoofed header fell through to the catchall instead. Georgiev reports 500 spoofed-header requests across 50 concurrent workers, with zero admin-service hits and 500 catchall hits. These are his reported results, not an official Traefik Labs statistic or an independent replication. Read the test report.

How multi-layer routing is designed to work
Traefik Labs describes the feature this way: “Multi-layer routing enables you to create hierarchical relationships between routers, where parent routers can process requests through middleware before child routers make final routing decisions.” Traefik’s v3.6 Multi-Layer Routing documentation describes the request flow:
- A request arrives at an entrypoint and is evaluated against a parent router.
- If the parent rule matches, its middleware runs and can modify the request.
- Child routers make their routing decisions using the request after parent middleware has run; a child can match an attribute added or changed by that middleware.
- The request proceeds to the service configured on the matching leaf router.
This hierarchy is why a client-supplied role header is not, by itself, the same as a role header added during parent processing. The docs say child routers cannot be called directly: requests must flow through a parent. That is the intended design behavior; Georgiev’s test is one reported example, not a universal security guarantee. The official docs show ForwardAuth returning role headers as a possible authentication-based routing pattern, but that is distinct from the middleware he tested.

Which providers support parentRefs?
Multi-layer routing depends on the provider used to define the router hierarchy. Traefik’s v3.6 documentation lists File configuration, KV stores, and Kubernetes CRD IngressRoute as supported options. Docker labels alone do not support parentRefs; neither do standard Kubernetes Ingress or Gateway API providers.
| Configuration source | Multi-layer routing support | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| File provider | Supported | Can define the router hierarchy and parentRefs. |
| KV stores: Consul, etcd, Redis, ZooKeeper | Supported | Can define the hierarchy through the relevant KV provider. |
| Kubernetes CRD IngressRoute | Supported | Use the Traefik CRD rather than standard Kubernetes Ingress. |
| Docker provider labels | Not supported for multi-layer routing | For Docker deployments, the v3.6 guide describes using the File provider for router hierarchy alongside Docker for service discovery. |
| Standard Kubernetes Ingress or Gateway API | Not supported | These providers do not define this multi-layer router hierarchy. |
Use documentation for the exact Traefik release and provider in production; a configuration for one provider is not automatically portable to another. See the v3.6 advanced configuration guidance.

Router hierarchy and inherited settings
- Root routers have no
parentRefsand can define entrypoints and TLS. - Intermediate routers reference their parent and cannot define services.
- Leaf routers reference their parent and must define services.
- Non-root routers inherit root settings such as entrypoints and TLS.
Keep the hierarchy’s responsibilities clear: parent routers apply the shared processing, while leaf routers route to services. For Docker-based service discovery, the File provider can hold the parent-child relationship while the Docker provider supplies service information, as described in Traefik’s v3.6 guide.
What the test does—and does not—establish
The test offers a useful, narrow result: in Georgiev’s reported configuration, a spoofed header on a request outside the parent path did not send that request to the admin service. It does not establish what happens with every middleware, provider, nesting pattern, concurrency level, or deployment. In particular, it does not test whether a real ForwardAuth service returns headers as expected, whether those headers can be influenced by a client, or how a complete authentication chain behaves.

Before relying on this as a boundary around sensitive services, validate the exact Traefik version, provider, parent and child rules, middleware order, authentication response headers, and fallback routes used in your deployment. Test both authorized requests that should reach the protected service and unauthorized requests—including requests carrying forged role headers—that should not.

Compatibility is another operational consideration: Georgiev warns that a dynamic configuration containing parentRefs may fail when loaded by an older pre-3.6 instance. Treat that as the author’s compatibility advice and verify behavior against the precise versions and providers in your rollout. The report describes his setup and observations.

Keep separate middleware advisories in view
A successful routing test is not a substitute for reviewing security advisories that affect the rest of a Traefik deployment. Separately, Traefik’s advisory for a header-disclosure issue in the errors middleware lists versions through v3.6.14 as affected and v3.6.15 as patched. That issue is not the multi-layer routing test or the customRequestHeaders behavior described above; check the advisory against the version you actually run. Read Traefik’s advisory.
